From Linux to Windows, what do I need to know. by venportin sysadmin

[–]munky9001 -2 points-1 points ago

If you are literally 'never seen server before'

You're going to be relatively far behind but if you are a very capable linux person you will be better then the majority of windows admins in weeks time. The reality is ya... just follow the gui and you're easy. The problem with typical windows admins is that they don't know the final destination and they dont follow... they search. Linux admins on the otherhand aren't given a pretty simplified gui and they just need to know what they are doing. So when you transfer over to windows you know what you need to change and you head directly there for windows.

Probably SQL query troubles most likely.

My suggest was drip excessive amount of hot water on the puck before using. However also get yourself something else to put in it. Creamo Cream is way too slick and williams isnt slick enough. Match made in heaven imo.

Advice on Air Conditioning, please by azulblooin sysadmin

[–]munky9001 0 points1 point ago

Well first you go check a normal cpu or gpu temp. Right now my dual gpus are 43% fans, 58celcius and no load. So hardware can handle 100+F easily. Just dont keep 90+ for the entire summer.

Now those racks with built in airconditioning... obviously not an option when their price is like $5000.

You cant just shrink wrap your rack and put an airconditioner in it because the heat doesnt go anywhere.

It's certainly a good question that I cant solve without powertools.

I've tried pushing our company to move to google apps, but my boss just doesn't like having email out of our control. :/

Probe him why and convince him that it's way cheaper to do it.

If his argument is that google is reading the emails... he's right. Except it's not a person its a script going general and no eyes ever see the mail.

sysadmin pay scale by deacon4in sysadmin

[–]munky9001 1 point2 points ago

Firstly it all depends where you are.

If I moved to Toronto I would get like $20k raise but I also would be paying $25k more in cost of living. Advantage of living in a ghost town I guess is cost of living is next to nothing.

Next it doesn't really matter what you 'have' done. What is your job title and what is it they expect you to do. That's what you are paid for. Anything above and beyond your job isn't going to magically get you more $.

In your 3 month eval that's when you goto them and be like, "here's my current job description but I am doing well above and beyond that. Example 1, 2, 3. I would like a raise to account for that."

If they don't go as high as you like. DONT just turn around and be like, "im just doing my job description now." You say, "Fine lets reconvene @6 months or in 6 months. Which pretty much says to them... hey im coming back for more $ and they'll budget you a good raise then.

Opps. Ctrl Z Ctrl Z

Just remove from domain, rename pc, reboot, rejoin domain or dont because thin clients(legit thins) shouldn't need to be apart of the domain.

Spam, how much is too much? by StrangeCaptainin sysadmin

[–]munky9001 2 points3 points ago

How much spam is too much? Even just 1 with a virus or something is too much because suddenly you're infected.

How much adverstising spam is too much? Well in my opinion I don't want to see any of these ads so again even just 1 is too much.

So my spam folder can feel free to get full.

I have customers that feel that spam going to their junk is unacceptable and they just want it deleted.

I have been on the end where sendmail + external antispam with me going into perl cpan to get the modules spamassassin was lacking. LAME.

I have been on the side of bleeding edge amavis-new and postfix balancing world wide accessibility vs spam.

I have been on the side of barracuda + exchange.

I have been on the side of roll your own anti-spam + exchange.

Let me just say... the number of hours per week required to maintain the above is ridiculous and some are better than others but once you do the math on your maintenance costs + hardware + software + intertubes + end users losing patience with IT cost. That price isnt anywhere near google apps or even office365(office365 is really expensive).

I have to say now that I have done the google apps thing... I really don't want to go back. At least for the majority of customers. I do still maintain several exchange servers. I have an SBS customer with exchange2007 and no anti-spam going on. No idea why they dont hemorrhage with rage from spam. I installed GFI mailessentials on another customer with exchange2010 just yesterday. It's going quite well actually.

You don't know the value behind google apps when you can pretty much know the email services are working, anti-spam is the best in the world, and any problems at all and you can basically turn right around and be like lolderpderp that's your problem.

Maverick -> Natty -> Oneiric -> Precise

How did you skip natty and oneiric? If you went to sources.list and sed -i 's/maverick/precise/g'

Do you have a good backup? Might actually be easier to just fresh install and mount the old fs and cp everything you need.

Ive had one where this happened. I call back to say they can't log back in to kick me out. Mind you that only works because I usually log in as them so they dont lose anything their stupid asses dont realize are even open. They say, 'oh im sorry i just needed to log in quickly.'

I log back in and starting going to town. She kicks me out again and I call back, "Oh a customer came in and I needed my computer"

I log back in and I'm looking at event logs... and im filtered for like warning-error-critical and she kicks me out again. Soon as she sees the screen instant shutdown. "I needed to log in to print something but then I saw all kinds of errors on my screen so I quickly shut down my laptop."

I'm basically, "well that's what I had open and was looking at. It wasn't something to be concerned about exactly so you can turn your computer on but you seem very busy so let me get back to you later this week to see if I can get on your machine."

Contemplating a switch from Dell to Lenovo... by xftwitchin sysadmin

[–]munky9001 6 points7 points ago

I do Dell, Lenovo, and HP.

Dell takes a week to deliver while Lenovo/HP are basically overnight.

Local techs for all 3 tend to be equally derpty.

Hardware basically doesn't matter because :users: are never going tax the hardware at all.

Resolution doesn't matter because the users are blind as bats and change their res to like 1024x768.. I have a person who inherited a monitor from a graphics design or cad guy whose monitor was like 2500x1600 or whatever and he literally uses 1024x768 and the thing is totally the wrong AR. It's painful to look at.

Keyboard-usb ports.. etc etc. All dont matter.

The only thing that matters to them is $. They don't want the cheapest because that's a bad image. They don't want the most expensive because who has that kind of $.

They just have a gut feeling to how much $ they want to spend and that's that... they couldnt care less about what is actually delivered.

Here's a question for you: How long have you been interviewing candidates and what characteristics and values do you look for in a candidate?

I was only kinda involved in the most recent hirings but I wasnt present at the interviews and these factors never even came up because these people didnt even know jackshit.

1st Interview is the technological trivia interview.

2nd Interview is the personality interview.

What's your silliest rookie sysadmin mistake? I made one tonight... by honestbleepsin sysadmin

[–]munky9001 0 points1 point ago

Took on a job where ISP's main mail server hadn't been patched in years. The server had for the most part just mail and web services. I worked on the mail server and the thing was basically an open relay for spammers. I basically worked on it and got it to a good position. Which blocked so much spam it's ridiculous. Except those spammers got a little mad... so they went oh wait a completely insecure web server. PWNED.

However getting hacked coincided with the day that I quit without notice.

Cloudy thinking: The death of the PC is a fallacy by josefonsecain sysadmin

[–]munky9001 2 points3 points ago

"Cloud" in terms of private cloud to thinclients does nothing to really solve any problems.

End users are still having all the same problems. Hardware never really has troubles. On the server side however things are more complicated and your meantime to fail is just that much sooner.

"Cloud" in terms of putting services elsewhere tends to be hit and miss but the general rule is "If everything in the cloud went on the front page of newspaper would it matter?"

So websites and dns are totally cool to have in the cloud.

Your databases or spreadsheets or accounting? Fuck no.

How would you build a very large mail system? by fubes2000in sysadmin

[–]munky9001 0 points1 point ago

I'd be looking at probably about 5 relatively beasty servers. 2 out, 2 in. Replicated sans between 3 locations; meteor proofing(so at least 1km between locations), 1 location is the 'cloud'

I dont think I would do a cluster at all; just round robin and 2 of the locations are same priority with cloud location being just as backup. I'm not sure how much of a pipe you'll need at each location but that probably could be done in a 100mbit probably easily.

In terms of software. I would likely go openbsd, postfix, amavis-new, spamassassin, and some sort of management front. I wouldn't offer webmail. Imap and pop3 would probably be handled primarily by the cloud services.

you realize '1 volume license' wont just be 1 machine right? Minimum is hundreds machines or something big. The $ won't even be reasonable neither.
