Based on my karma, 40.11% of life is luck. That's the karma I got by posting two messages in the right place at the right time. The rest of it is from hard, but enjoyable, work.

I don't rely on luck. That would make me unlucky.

I rode motorcycles from when I was 17 until I was 34. Then my manager told me I had to get a car. I was that company's entire software department at the time and he was concerned about my safety. And the company's.

I bought my first car in 1988. It was a used Suzuki Alto subcompact, sold in Australia as the Suzuki Hatch. Although it had only three cylinders, it was quick little car. Unfortunately, I couldn't show it off to anybody because as soon as they got in, it slowed down.

When that wore out in 1996, I bought a new Daihatsu TS Charade which I've had ever since.

I use a combination of Avast antivirus, Comodo firewall, PeerBlock and the Adblock Plus, BrowserProtect and NoScript plugins for Firefox. Once a week, I run Spybot. They've kept me virus free for several years despite surfing some very dodgy websites. Even so, I boot into Linux when I want to do online banking.

WTF? At 5, I was walking a few miles to kindergarten which included crossing a four-lane highway (at the lights, of course). My mother showed me the way. Once. After that, I was on my own. At 7, I was regularly wandering off for hours at a time. At 10, I was catching two trains and a bus to go to school.

I have grave concerns about the ethics of making your students perpetrate a hoax on the Internet community. It appears to have contravened your university's code of ethics at http://universitypolicy.gmu.edu/code-of-ethics.html, specifically item 6 which starts with "We do not condone dishonesty in any form by anyone."

What are your students' feelings about the matter? Were the ethics discussed beforehand?
