Ever had an "I shouldn't be riding" moment? by Cytochrome_Cin motorcycles

[–]motophiliac 5 points6 points ago

I have done that once and I will never do it again.

It wasn't about the law. It wasn't about being pulled over by an angry cop. It wasn't about a fine or even prison sentence.

It was about my first waking thought from that day forth being whether the other person would have lived had I been sober.

It was about knowing that someone out there had had their son/daughter/brother/sister/mother/father removed from existence by me.

Luckily (although I obviously wasn't completely incapable) there was no other person but that thought, and every thought which could logically follow it, to the nth degree, was with me with every mile. I've never been so scared on a bike as I was that morning and it is something I can very confidently say I will never do again.

Oh my fucking word. So much vitriol in so few syllables.

I'd also like to apply this to the Murdochs, Ms Brookes and her pals. I'm sure there are many, many more but these will do for now.

This whole thing is unfolding beautifully if you ask me. I get a bit of a grin on every time I think of where the whole shambles is heading.

The people in the entire country who would most love to dig their shitty claws into this entire sorry mess are the ones in the dock.

Marvellous.

Really nice intro. I'm hearing bits of earlier Genesis, Steve Hackett era. Unusual piece. Some good, considered and tasteful guitar in there.

April. Because it was recorded in April last year.

There are a couple of noise gate fails on the drums and I feel I need to revisit them to calm them down a bit but this is probably the collective's most finished track.

I'm hoping to get a bit further afield this year. The northeast, my neck of the woods, has some fantastic roads and we'll probably get over to the Lake District at some point but I've rarely managed much beyond that. The pic is excellent. Proper good day! Here's to many more!

Annoyed with my ear. by Vicious_Hamsterin Bass

[–]motophiliac 0 points1 point ago

Play notes on the bass. Just kind of noodle around and you'll end up hearing something familiar. Doing this might just help you to make a connection and begin to understand how to translate frets into a tune you already know.

Play a song you already know. Learn to hear the distances between the notes you play. This is the key to developing an ear. It can become an obsession and you might think that you're destroying your ability to enjoy music. Been there and come out the other side with an even greater appreciation of composition.

Listen and play. Lots. If you already know how to play a song with no external aids (notepad, someone playing along with you etc.) you already have most of what is needed to learn something by ear. You just have to learn notes, scales and intervals before you try to write them down is all.

Gotcha!

The pic looked just perfect and I had to find out where that road is. Look like some nice roads around there! It's definitely the weather for it.

Seriously, if I click the link to the video and it's still up…!

I can't do it. In my mind it's the ultimate RickRoll and so it will stay until I destroy my illusion with a single click.

It's like Schröedinger's RickRoll. Until I click I can never be certain…

So, are they slowly learning that THEY CAN'T WIN.

In fact, winning doesn't make sense in this situation. The internet is a process, not a static thing which can be won or lost.

* Also, an important point is being missed. It was recently ruled by a US Judge that an IP address is not an individual. It is trivially obvious and maybe even legally defensible that an IP address is also not a website.

Critique my mix? First time with stereo mic setup on acoustic guitar by LunchMasterin audioengineering

[–]motophiliac 0 points1 point ago

Good track. Love the sparseness and you've got a wonderful performance there.

Guitars seemed a tad overcompressed although the playing style probably necessitated that to a degree. I might have panned the backing vocals more than the guitars, maybe narrowed the guitars down a tad. Think about putting the guitar in a distinct space, near the middle of the stereo field. The stereo effect is striking and you could maybe use it as emphasis on a particular vocal or part of the track but it loses impact as the track progresses.

Backing vocals lower in the mix and maybe a splash of reverb on them to pad them and separate them from the lead vocal which could be turned up a bit. It seemed as if the lead got lost among the harmonies for me.

There are some brilliant moments in there and I really like the song.

I just thought it was genuine entertainment. I've rarely laughed harder at a YouTube video. The guitarist's relentless slog through that riff just had me in stitches.

You know, the more I think about this kind of thing the more I realise that a generic computing platform would be a better thing to have embedded than a phone.

Samsung have just released a new camera, something which I saw coming a little while ago, with WiFi connectivity. Maybe there's even a market for a 3G camera. My point is that convergence is not being allowed to happen.

How about a generic and updateable-through-simple-surgery computer. It could be a SoC, the size of a thumbdrive circuit board with WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G/HSDPA/whatever, NFC and be powerful enough to drive these trivially easily. This turns any piece of tech; a camera, a keyboard, a pair of glasses, a ring worn around the finger, into a device capable of connecting to the internet in general. Your phone is simply a Bluetooth or ad-hoc WiFi pairable device the size of a pen.

I'm certain that a generic, easily updateable, easily connectable and capable piece of tech is the answer, not many devices which do different things. Centralise the computing power and your camera becomes literally a lens, a shutter, a sensor and a WiFi stack. Leave the processing to your subcutaneous processor.
