as far as I can tell real anti-US sentiment is dealt with just as harshly in the US as elsewhere, the only difference is that you can talk about the govt being shitty but can't suggest any concrete actions to fix it, because that would make you an enemy of the state. In real dictatorships even the mockery is not tolerated.

this is one of the things that most amused me about the Rome Total War series of games as well.

Pretty much every battle was preceded by the general denigrating the enemy because they were only a bunch of slaves or fit to be slaves etc, while his troops had the advantage of being free and most excellent Romans

This really put our own American war propaganda into sharp relief, with the constant reminders that we are free, and we are fighting for freedom to liberate the slaves of the other sides etc etc. (circa 2002)

It was funny because every general in the game resorted to it at every opportunity and was absurdly unsubtle and farcical
