What mandatory class do you think should be taught in high school that is not? by opioneersin AskReddit

[–]montanachill 0 points1 point ago

There's a really great model for a comprehensive course on sex and sexuality that is starting to gain some major headway actually. The teacher is going to be on TED this coming Friday, and there's an article about it from the NY Times Magazine. Here's a link:

I'm actually currently enrolled in this course, and I believe that it is truly incredible--I certainly hope that one day this sort of course becomes the norm in America. Ask me any questions.

We were already given this as required reading over the summer, actually. We're at a private school, but we discussed at length the possible messages regarding big Pharmaceutical companies and other corporations in relation to the government.

Posted this before, and this'll probably get buried, but here's what I wrote:

Essentially I was in a hotel and met Alan Rickman. This was a few years back, when the 6th book was out, and as he was signing an autograph for me, he asked if I finished the book. Starstruck, I said yes, even though I wasn't. He then says "Oh, so I guess you know that I'm the half-blood prince, huh?" My jaw dropped. I had Snape Personally reveal his true identity to me.

I also met Chris Brown the exact day he beat up Rihanna. He was actually pretty nice, so we were shocked when we heard later that day that he was currently being searched for by the police.

Actually, who am I kidding? I've already been on reddit for the past hour.

When my dad was in Law School my mom dressed up in a Gorilla costume and busted into his class unannounced. She then got up in front of everyone and asked where my dad was--he was sitting in the front, absolutely mortified. My mom then gave him a box of chocolates and said that she loved him and gave him a kiss in front of the entire class, and then left.

What were you doing when you learned about the 9/11 attacks (assuming you're old enough to remember)? by blckhlin AskReddit

I don't remember what I was doing when this happened--I was only in second grade. Still, I can tell you my dad's story.

On September 11th, 2001, my dad had a meeting scheduled in the first tower that was was to be hit later that morning. It was his birthday and my sister's very first day of kindergarten, so he was a bit upset that he had to spend the day at a meeting instead of enjoying himself. At the very last minute, meaning about an hour or so before the meeting, he decided not to board the train to NYC so that he could be with my sister for her first day of school and enjoy his birthday. He called everyone and cancelled the meeting (thus inadvertently saving several other lives). I later found out that had he gone, he would have surely been crushed under the rubble.

9/11 is always a weird day for our family, especially for my father. It's bittersweet in that it is my dad's birthday, a remembrance of a terrible terrorist attack, and a permanent reminder that family always takes priority over everything else.

If you could re-do an earlier portion of your education, would you? by burke_no_sleepsin AskReddit

Definitely. I go to a Quaker school, and in 9th grade we were required to take a Quakerism course. It was mostly about the history of Quakerism, but there was some really great discussion that I simply didn't pay attention to. Over the years I've grown to really love some of the Quaker teachings (even though I'm not all too religious), and I wish I had that sort of experience earlier on in 9th grade.

The point I was trying to make (the one that you obviously didn't fully grasp) through the alienation line was that it has become painfully obvious that you were in the wrong.

If you're not alienating people, you could be a meek coward, but you could just as easily be a normal, good guy who decided not to berate an innocent person with a nice car.

Not sure if what you were saying in your third paragraph was sarcastic or not, but of course you should share your opinions. That's the only way progress can occurr--if people TALK to each other about the issues that they are facing. It is uncivilized, however, to shout "Nice car, how many pensions did you steal to get it?" Also, some people are into sharing wives. Just saying.

And if the other side doesn't play by those rules, don't sink to their level by using their methodology. Fighting fire with fire begets more fire.

Also, how dare you imply that I'm some sort of coward for calling you out on what you did. To answer your question, of course I have tried standing up for what I believe is right. Just by responding to your question on reddit, I'm taking a stand. Unlike you, I don't feel the need to instantly call you names or insult the person I'm taking a stand against; instead, I do it through discourse (which I attempted here, yet it has obviously failed to bring any sort of understanding, which is really quite sad).
