TIL Japanese swordsmiths are limited to making 24 per year, one of the reasons they cost so much by Xenasisin todayilearned

[–]monster21faces 1 point2 points ago

The japanese accidentally created better steel. Their steel is more pure iron than anybody else's at the time. European steel didn't have to worry about being particularly pure because their iron wasn't as crude as Japan's. It took a few generations, but the Japanese eventually figured out how to make steel that didn't shatter.

Pretty much anybody who "chooses a lifestyle" is not an individual.

Calling yourself a punk and giving yourself a label defeats the entire idea of individualism.

Good idea bro, you'll need all that downforce with your front wheel drive Corolla S by jmc_automaticin cars

[–]monster21faces 1 point2 points ago

Also, he wouldn't have to be going that fast to have downforce actually help him. A properly designed and tested wing will start helping at speeds as low as 50mph. On my race car, during our regular 10-20 lap races we have a setup to help us on low speed corners. We have a setup for endurance racing too that helps cornering speeds and keeps us from using too much gas.

I understand. And probably not, but the idea that FWD cars don't need downforce is stupid.

I get all the fun making or whatever, but giving any car downforce at higher speeds does actually help, despite its drive line.

Will Muay Thai and BJJ help me with wrestling? by AlexLethalin martialarts

[–]monster21faces 2 points3 points ago

No. Depending on the kind of wrestling you do, (greco, olympic, etc.) you won't really benefit from BJJ because the techniques in no-gi require you to essentially break the rules of most styles of wrestling, either that or getting stacked and pinned. You might get something out of learning how to keep side control and a decent top game, but generally it's the other way around. Wrestling helps to hide the holes in your bjj. Not the other way around.

Judo guy here: Not really that fast. The guy literally walked into that tai otoshi. The coolest part is that he did it with that giant tiger head on .

It's always your fault.

But the problem solving gratification is worth it and appeases that part of my brain that needs to solve problems.

Nikola Tesla Wasn't God And Thomas Edison Wasn't The Devil - Forbes by shatteredmindofbobin TrueReddit

How about innovating the entirety of the lighting world? That was pretty genius. Or maybe inventing the phonograph. Creating the first industrial research laboratory. Inventing the motion picture camera. Yeah, no, I guess he wasn't a genius.

I think that the word "island" is making you all romanticize this entire thing.

As an engineer, I think that a lot of people misunderstand. Tesla was a scientist at heart. Edison was an engineer.
