Breeder logic: Disregard currency, acquire children by TheProphetMuhammadin childfree

[–]monkeybreath 1 point2 points ago

I find the "Breeder logic" title insulting. First, calling people "breeders" in the first place is dehumanizing. Second, implying that this woman's mentality is anything like that of the average parent is completely disingenuous.

To be honest, not that interesting a video, unless you are into young ravers in bras.

I just started reading Greg Bear's Blood Music which talks about this very thing. It was written in 1983.

Does anyone know why Britannia Beach has a network of wires above the swim area? by Lurker1001in ottawa

[–]monkeybreath 4 points5 points ago

As noted by others, it is intended to keep the bacteria levels down on the beach and in the swimming area by keeping the seagulls from landing and pooping there.

You'll see the same thing at Mooney's Bay beach.

That is a crazy perspective. What shape is that room that you cannot see the horizon through the floor to ceiling window?

Bars are now using facial recognition. Super creepy. Oh and this makes for a nice list of bars to avoid now in San Francisco by ieatfliesin technology

[–]monkeybreath 1 point2 points ago

It will be interesting to see how this pans out. I actually think the young people who go to bars will stop caring, and embrace the technology. It isn't that much different than having 867 friends on Facebook, after all.

I'm most interested in seeing how it affects who goes to which bars. Will it keep the male/female ratio stable? Some bars let in more women than guys, so what happens then? Will the beautiful people all flock to the same bars, or will this cause a dilution effect?

I've been sitting on my sofa by the window for the last hour and all I had to do was look over my left shoulder. But instead, I didn't notice anything until I saw your post. Looks like the fire is out.

There will be less interference than laying the cables directly side by side or bundled, so you're fine.

Debunking the Greenhouse Gas Theory in Three Simple Steps by jjeremyharrelsonin environment

[–]monkeybreath 0 points1 point ago

Wow, this was really reaching.

In the future, says Joe, people will declare: "The atmosphere keeps the planet from getting too hot in the daytime, and too cold at night time".

Straw man argument. Of course we need an atmosphere to moderate temperatures. The actual argument climate scientists are making is that we are changing the atmosphere, which changes the temperature and climate to something we didn't build society to accommodate.

“It’s quite simple. The flux of power on the top of the atmosphere is 1368 W/m2; however, they [IPCC] say it is 341 W/m2.”

That is a complete fabrication. There isn't one model, there are several made by several groups so it is a bit of a stretch to claim that each group is making the same mistake when the correct figure is so easy to find.

What Casey shows is that in reality, a 10,000ppm increase in carbon dioxide could, at most, reduce the conductivity of air by a measly one percent and given the actual difference between the thermal conductivities of carbon dioxide (0.0168) and zero grade air (0.0260), a 10,000ppm increase in carbon dioxide would lower the thermal conductivity of zero grade air by 0.36 percent.

Another straw man argument. It isn't thermal conduction that is the problem. It is that CO2 blocks IR radiation. Visible light passes through CO2, warms the surface and radiates IR light which gets absorbed by the CO2. The more CO2 there is, the more absorption that happens.

“Yesterday a professor tried to tell me that a blackbody (BB) would heat itself up if its radiation would shine back on it - if it was surrounded completely by a perfect mirror.

Another straw man argument. No competent scientist is saying this. But, if a body (of any colour) was heated to a certain temperature and put in a vacuum surrounded by a perfect reflector, it will maintain its temperature. We call them thermos flasks. Real ones, of course, do lose heat due to conduction and because the flask isn't a perfect reflector.

Credit card issuers set up perverse system, Competition Bureau charges by KevZeroin canada

Some places already charge fees for debit cards (convenience stores mostly). But for any moderately-sized store, debit is actually more cost effective than cash, since banks actually charge to accept and count it.

I don't mind paying a little bit more for a useful service, but the thing that really pisses me off is the points and cash back incentives. Who is paying for that? Me. Who loses? Everybody who doesn't or can't use a credit card with rewards.
