Harry C. Delmolino, an 18 year-old moderator of r/bicycling, was recently fatally hit by a motorists. Please be wary of cyclists on the roads guys! by My_Wife_Athenain self

[–]minhhale 1 point2 points ago

Before I push the pedal down I always turn my head to make sure that no vehicle is in fact coming, from my left, right, rear, or front. I don't care if it is the green light for me. Ride slow, be safe and avoid crashes at all costs. When you are on a bicycle, you are small; it is very difficult for motorists to see you coming when a tree or a bus is blocking you from their view. Safety first - always.

Reddit, what is the most powerful image you have ever seen? by tokerjoker11in AskReddit

[–]minhhale 0 points1 point ago

Definitely. It got to a point where I began to suspect the monk was drugged or was already dead when the fire started. He was a human being after all, and I really doubt if the body is physically capable of holding out against an engulfing fire without any resisting movement at all.

Is squatting essentially the same as sitting and bending down? by minhhalein shittingadvice

[–]minhhale[S] 0 points1 point ago

Aren't you bothered by the fear of someone accidentally walking in on you crouching on the toilet, your genitals and the poop half way out fully exposed though? At least when you're sitting you've got everything covered!

How did people throughout history wipe their buttocks? by DrHENCHMANin AskHistorians

[–]minhhale 4 points5 points ago

I have been in one of those squatting toilets in Vietnam. For where they don't use toilet papers they have a bucket of water in the room, with which you splash the water up with your right hand and rub your bottoms clean with the left hand. Not so bad, considering in some places your left hand is the sole cleaner - no liquid assistance!

It may sound insignificant, but I just paid off my credit card, my car and my student loan and now don't owe any bank a single dollar. What are your achievements you'd like to share? by thatguyintheskyin AskReddit

[–]minhhale 0 points1 point ago

Started off not being able to run a mile to finishing a 10K in 53' after six months. Looking back at the process now, I am extremely proud that I had gathered the willpower not to give up despite the crushing exhaustion, as well as the dedication to get out of bed at 6 in the morning, every single day.

What are the fake "tooth whitening" and "cure wrinkles" internet ads supposed to achieve? by Kantor48in answers

[–]minhhale 3 points4 points ago

The content of the ads doesn't matter. It can be one for growing your dick, making money online, losing belly fat, magical pick up lines,.. As long as they gets gullible people to click on and give their credit card information away. As for the wrinkles curing, I believe there should be quite a number of middle-aged women who don't know the way around the Internet and would fall for those ads.

By the time the victim realizes and freezes their account, 100 Oron and Rapidshare premium accounts have been purchased and sold around the globe. They go to countries with high piracy demand but with little financial means to pay in an official channel such as India, Russia, Vietnam. The credit card thieves make a shit ton of money selling these premium accounts, and a part of this illegal profit is directed into those seemingly absurd ads you see.

Great to see that you held the pace steady all the way through - always 10km/h from start to finish!

My marathon progress by northernguyin running

[–]minhhale 1 point2 points ago

Congrats on finally breaking the 12km/h barrier! One of the goals I have for this summer is a sub 25-min for a 5K. Hopefully with the right progress I'll get to where you are now at 54 in five years' time!

Gunowners of Reddit: Honestly, would you prefer to live in a society with stricter gun control AND safer? by minhhalein guns

[–]minhhale[S] -7 points-6 points ago

I think you are making a good point. But then, do the people of New Zealand or Japan feel threatened at all when the firepower are all in the government's hands and they are practically vulnerable as you put it? Those countries are as free, democratic, developed and wealthy as the United States - they are comparable in many ways. However, I'm sure New Zealand and Japanese people can feel even more safe and content with the gun-free society they're living in compared to their American counterparts.

"Freedom" is such an arbitrary concept. How would you feel if a multi-millionaire decided to enjoy his freedom and built a nuclear silo in his backyard? There will always be restrictions in order to establish security and order, and in those places I mentioned the restrictions are on firearms. I am all for the rights to to pursue your dreams, to share files without copyrights, to be whoever you want to be. But when it comes to rights for devices that can destroy practically anything at the push of a button - such as a firearm, I would not want to see such "rights" freely available to anybody.

All my running paid off! Just ran from a State Trooper and got AWAY! by ImRedditedin running

Four times of 8 miles a week is quite a feat! I'm at 20km a week now, and hopefully will get to 50km (31 miles) by the end of the summer.

I am 31 years old and about to watch *Star Wars: A New Hope* for the first time. What iconic films have you never seen? by HairyAltoin self

I have never watched Star Wars, Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, or Harry Potter either. The fantasy genre has never appealed much to me.

Why is it that I can play a song in a foreign language fluently in my head, but cannot sing it into words? by minhhalein askscience

[–]minhhale[S] 0 points1 point ago

But if the sounds are so foreign that my mouth cannot pronounce them, why is the brain able to memorize the lyrics and replay them so flawlessly in the first place?

Think about 100 years from now, there will be 100 years of high def content created, (music, movies, television). That will be more content than anyone will ever be able to watch in their entire lives. And all of it will be copyright free. by Professor226in self

[–]minhhale 4 points5 points ago

I'm just afraid that to the people of 2112, the content of 2012 will be as interesting as the silent movies are to us now. They will be so inundated with virtual reality entertainment that having to sit still for two hours in front of a screen might be unthinkable to them. Just like how we can't imagine being able to enjoy a movie without sound or color now.

How was it an "indisputably" good thing for China, if you don't mind explaining your view to me? I am asking seriously as I believe the Nationalists were a much better choice of governance for China than the Communists (I have explained why to greendaze above).

Also I'm Vietnamese not Chinese.

The Nationalist government was definitely corrupt at the time. However, their more or less free market economy, and the fact that they were very Western-oriented, provided the system heaps of rooms for improvement. Even under autocratic military rule, Taiwanese leaders are still the elite of society. This helped them achieve the economic miracle, as opposed to communist China whose policymakers are peasants and revolutionaries. The communist system is one that is doomed for disaster and failure from the start.

Also if it wasn't for the Communists, the Korean and Vietnam war would have never happened. The two of the major and bloodiest wars of the 20th century could have been avoided had Mao lost his civil war.

Completely agreed with you. I feel like it was Deng Xiaoping who opened up China's economy to capitalism that got China into the economic boom. Mao did not prepare China for anything. All he did was that he put a political, economic and cultural shackle on the nation, and when Deng loosened up the shackle and allowed people to do their own business, boom, the economy got up. That is not something to be claimed credit for at all.

If anything, Mao should be condemned as the greatest criminal in China history. Even Qin Xi Hoang united the country. What exactly did Mao do? The world would have been better off if he did not fight off the Nationalist.

Tonight's moon through my rifle scope by minhhalein pics

[–]minhhale[S] 0 points1 point ago

Very difficult. By the time I got my camera in focus, the moon had moved a few mildots (or rather, the Earth had spun a few meters). Also when I let go of the scope it wobbled slightly and lost the focus I'd tried to aim at. This is an object 380,000km away, after all.
