WTF! Internet-savvy Senator Al Franken is a *SPONSOR* of the SOPA bill?! by wdr1in technology

Or until they slip one into a defense spending bill or the general budget.

I asked Jon Stewart about SOPA. He said he'd look into it, and mentioned it in the intro! by place_facein politics

Ok. Hope you're right. Nobody in the tech community seems to think so, but they're probably just harbingers of doom.

You posted:

I disagreed.

If people are pirating out of spite, doesn't that mean that they already pirate stuff, and are upset that it's no harder? If you didn't pirate to begin with, I don't think making piracy harder is going to make you spiteful.

I can assure you that IF SOPA happens, and IF it has the large ramifications that have been predicted, then YES, people who have never pirated before will pirate, because those gentle non-pirating net denizens will be collateral damage. They will look for someone to blame and punish.

But yes, Stewart may be on board with SOPA. I really can't say.

I'm starting to think you don't know the potential ramifications of SOPA. This is ostensibly a bill to counter piracy, but the ramifications of the bill could hugely and negatively affect websites that have nothing to do with piracy. The DMCA already offers piracy protections.

All of this yelling about SOPA isn't because people want piracy to be easy. It's because TONS of legitimate websites will be negatively affected in a sweeping, ill conceived measure aimed at placating select businesses at the detriment of everybody else.

Absolutely not true. The occurrences of this may not be large, but it will definitely be between a non-zero amount and a noticeable amount.

I dunno. People may be so aggravated that they decide to pirate out of spite, even though they don't currently pirate.
