Thomas Jefferson on religious tolerance by Terran_it_upin atheism

I didn't say Islam is the worst religion, and I didn't say shit about Catholicism. Read carefully.

Profiling is discrimination. That is literally all the word means. It's looking at one aspect of a person and making a decision based on that characteristic. When the chosen characteristic is race, we call the decision racism. When the chosen characteristic is sex, we call the decision sexism.

Now imagine if they didn't charge based on statistically certifiable risk, everyone who isn't high risk would shoulder the additional cost this high risk group generates.

You mean they'd have to charge people based on individual conduct instead of what they look like? How terrible!

Spreading the costs of risk is the sole purpose of insurance. Spreading those costs a little more evenly won't bankrupt the industry or its customers.

Discrimination shouldn't be a dirty word.

Hence "justified." It's still not the same thing as equality. Feel free to argue that these laws are just, but stop saying they treat men and women equally, because that's clearly false.

If we cost more charge us more. That's equality.

What's equal about having different prices for "us" versus "them?" It would be hard to find a more obvious division into unequal groups!

I've cost my insurance company nothing so far. They charge me more because people like me cost them more than people unlike me. Gender equality would be if they didn't ask or care about my gender before deciding what to charge me.

It's that kind of mentality that got us affirmative action and all that other bullshit.

Affirmative action is also discrimination.

Since nobody on reddit seems to know what the word means, let me break it down for you: discrimination means nothing more than treating a person differently according to some criteria. According to skin color? Racism. According to date of birth? Ageism. According to gender? Sexism. Dead simple. Questions of right and wrong aren't relevant to the definition.

Look, you can argue that offering different prices according to gender is fair or sensible or at least tolerable. That's a meaningful conversation we can have. However, even if you win that argument, the practice is and will remain discriminatory. There's nothing to discuss on that point because it's a rigidly defined term which you have consistently misused.

Maybe check how they file their census forms.

Anyway, gender isn't absolute, either. About one out of every hundred people is born with mixed or indeterminate genitals. Another few will choose to alter their physical sex. As many as a dozen might be gay or bisexual, and I'd be interested to know how that affects accident rates.

Car Insurance Sexism. by froggy666in MensRights

[–]mindbleach 2 points3 points ago

So therefore, if it were a verifiable fact that black drivers cost more in claims, charging them twice as much wouldn't be racism? Good luck with that.

This is NOT discrimination based on gender, but on accident rates.

If this is the OP's first car, his accident rate is presumably zero.

I'm starting to think redditors have no idea what "discrimination" means. It is literally nothing more than treating someone differently based on a particular trait. The OP would receive different treatment (lower prices) if nothing in the universe changed beside his gender, so this is gender discrimination. It really is that simple. Arguing for its justifiability or legality doesn't change that.

It will just raise the rates of women.

Or it might lower the rates of men. Or both, if prices average out. In what way is that not a solution?

Car Insurance Sexism. by froggy666in MensRights

[–]mindbleach 4 points5 points ago

Equality is the way it is currently.

Equality is treating men differently from women?

The sexes are equal but different.

You are describing justified discrimination. It's not the same thing as equality, for reasons that should be blindingly obvious.

The whole insurance business model relies on being able to charge high risk groups higher rates.

False. It's entirely possible to charge a wide customer base equally so long as total income exceeds total expenses. Discriminatory pricing based on risk is just more lucrative.

Also age-ism, location-ism, and a few of other -isms. You're being treated as a demographic statistic. Welcome to having insurance.

Discrimination of gay marriage... by gphhawkinsin atheism

Fucking over two groups in equal but opposite measure is not neutrality, on account of that "but opposite" part. "Separate but equal" is not a form of impartiality.

Discrimination of gay marriage... by gphhawkinsin atheism

[–]mindbleach 0 points1 point ago

Men can't marry men and women can't marry women.

Equality between men and women means not caring that they're men and women. The law should treat them as persons. Marriage should be between a person and another person, without the need to peek inside their underwear.

Why does reddit have such a blind spot on the evils of "separate but equal" when it comes to same-sex marriage? Mandating the gender of marrying couples is sexist in exactly the same way that mandating the ethnicity of marrying couples was racist.

Ah, semantics - one of the most dishonest forms of argument.

Maybe so, but that's all the more reason not to enable someone else's dishonesty. It doesn't serve the cause of honest argument to adopt derisive language without question.

[–]mindbleach 1 point2 points ago

The phrase "politically correct" is also an implicit argument. Language in politics is rife with subtle propaganda.

Assuming that your opponents' terms are the only meaningful way to describe a problem grants them an immediate advantage. We talk about "gay rights" and wonder why rednecks complain about 'gays wanting special rights.' We remind them that marriage was different in the past and accidentally agree that we're "redefining marriage." We've allowed so much pigeonholing that it takes a dozen letters to cover the whole spectrum of modern sexual discrimination.

The root problem is simply that people are legally separated into genders for different treatment. Laws which present one option for men and another for women are sexist to exactly the degree that laws which present one option for blacks and another for whites are racist. Yet somehow, even people who support same-sex marriage will insist that it's not about gender... in the same sentence they called it same-sex marriage.

You can't fight attempts to manipulate you if you don't recognize when they happen.

I live in Florida. Yesterday I spoke to a man who could probably read English, but didn't bother to separate it in his head from Creole or French. It was like having a conversation using only Germanic-rooted words.

Meanwhile, if Nordic redditors didn't leave that little disclaimer, the only indication that they're ESL is when their hometown has five umlauts.

Would you describe laws against interracial marriage as "race neutral?"

Discrimination of gay marriage... by gphhawkinsin atheism

[–]mindbleach 2 points3 points ago

They could say "I want to make marriage laws gender-neutral" or "I want the law to treat men and women equally."

Terminology is a form of argument.

Right, but those good men were mislead based on real-world consequences. They thought they were creating a better 70-ish years of modern life for themselves and their children. People who genuinely believe in heaven and hell are balancing their actions against literally infinite reward and punishment. If their beliefs are internally consistent then no argument about the observable effects of their actions can sway them from following 'the will of God.'

Steam cares a lot less than you think. They'll only ban your account if you try to screw them out of money, and they'll only VAC-ban you if you cheat in multiplayer. Modding a single-player game you already own doesn't even register on their radar.

Lenovo claims 14-day standby on a fresh battery. Even at full-tilt it should last as long as a decent netbook.

I am seriously jazzed that x86 SOCs have moved beyond 486SX POSs from Vortex, inch-thick pico-ITX designs from VIA, six-year-old PMPs from Rio, and $2000 hacker toys. I want a phone that runs Windows 7 instead of that iOS-styled Windows 8 crap. I want a portable version of Firefox that doesn't need to restart whenever I switch tasks. I want to play twenty years' worth of shooters and RTSs using the original EXEs.

I am going to root the fuck out of these things if they ever reach the US.

Even without the cult of personality surrounding Communist leaders, the suppression of religious belief is obviously tyrannical. A country that is atheist (or else!) is no better and than and in fact no different from a country that is christian (or else!). Secularism requires equal treatment of all opinions regarding the unfalsifiable.

That's equal legal treatment, by the way. Nobody here has suggested that private citizens aren't allowed to call bullshit.
