memory

If this is a pedantic fest, let me say that memory is made of transistors and thus follows the original intent of Moore's Law.

Ahh, thanks. My only other mechanical watch is a Seiko 5 (with the 7s26) so part of me would feel silly buying a dress watch that so closely resembles in both appearance and mechanism my current watch, I really really like the looks of this.

People always lament bad film adaptations of good books. But what are some examples of superior cinematic adaptations? by CheatasaurusRexin literature

[–]mikelj 3 points4 points ago

Fear and Loathing was very very close. I might say I prefer the book simply because it has more of Hunter's excellent writing, but it would be incredibly hard for me to pick one over the other.

I can't say you're wrong, because the movie was (and is) amazing while the book is just very good. The problem with comparing them is, as ascagnel said below, there is a lot that was left out or changed in the movie, so much so that I would argue that is was almost just "inspired by" the book.

This is a great find. I'm seriously considering it as I need a dress watch. Do you have any information on the movement?

10 Software Tools You Should Know by chtefin ECE

Not to sound like a pretentious Linux guy, but all ECEs that work with code should have access to some kind of *nix server. Scripting, organization, remote access are all orders of magnitude easier than in Windows.

When the valedictorian at my little brothers grad ended the speech with "YOLO". by Verdaugain funny

[–]mikelj 7 points8 points ago

I am kind of surprised I made it all the way down to this comment before I saw someone who was not foaming at the mouth about YOLO. I never heard of it before a week or so ago, shockingly on reddit.

And to be honest, take it how you want. If, since we only get one go 'round this ride, you want to go crazy and do everything, then do it. Live fast, die young. On the other hand, maybe that means going slow and being careful.

In the end, it's a pop song. Who gives a shit? How can there be this many people whose lives revolve around memes (arrow in the knee, pun threads, nice try X, etc.) get so unbelievably butthurt about a bunch of teenagers and some fad?

Think back to high school. Think of yourself in high school. Think of the fads then.

A classy LSU fan before the '09 Gators - Tigers game by toastercookiein CFB

Eh, as a beer lover, I just don't like NOLA. I wanted to, I'm born and raised in New Orleans, but meh. It the Blonde and Brown just taste like weak homebrew to me.

But yes, Bayou Teche LA31 is one of my favorites. And Lazy Magnolia has some good ones as well.

If the US was able to put men on the moon in the '60s with less computing power than a modern cell phone, why is it that modern countries such as China or even North Korea can't pull it off? by PoeticGopherin askscience

[–]mikelj 79 points80 points ago

TLI, trivial? Hardly. Without computers, Apollo 13's trajectory change would have taken over 4500 human-years to calculate.

I think he means trivial by modern computing standards. The point being that those calculations aren't what is stopping other countries' space programs. A mobile phone could calculate the trajectories. Modern 3D gaming is likely orders of magnitude more complicated than calculating the trajectories.

But interesting post nonetheless.

I'm pretty sure it was MDA (instead of MDMA) which IIRC has a higher toxicity. Also, I'm pretty sure it was a ridiculous amount they gave them, and the monkeys were killed immediately after.

If you can replace the units of your weight in kilograms with pounds and you're still fat, you're really fat.

Although in fairness, 158.8lbs isn't fat. I just wanted to make that comment.

Stole this idea from r/nba. If you could choose one image to define the NFL, what would it be? Here is mine. by glutenfree123in nfl

[–]mikelj 1 point2 points ago

It goes beyond the whole Vick thing. I moved to Atlanta last year and before the Saints-Falcons game I wore my Saints jerseys for days and got like two comments the entire time. I know the whole "lots of transplants" argument, but still. Take some pride. I see Braves hats all day on MARTA and in bars, but rarely, even during football season do I see Falcons gear outside of the gameday trains.

To be honest, I really don't care. I feel like a lot of people are being hypocrites about it, and to be honest, I seriously was sick of the whole "yay the Saints" schtick. Part of our pride came from the brown bag days, and to have every bandwagon fan SaintsFan4Lyfe got old.

Honestly, I'm glad to hear that. Any Falcons fan that could not still hate the Saints is worse than a Falcons fan: a shitty Falcons fan.

I was looking at that oft-circulated hop chart, and while I never see Crystal in recipes or at the brewstore, it looked like a good flavor profile. I'll have to keep my eyes open for it.
