Has anybody tried Dragon's Dogma? by Depredorin Games

[–]methyboy 1 point2 points ago

2/5's and stuff on some reviews

It got one review that low: Joystiq. It has 78 on Metacritic.

When someone bashes something you like, you sing it's praises, not back them up.

Why? Why aren't people capable of admitting that, while fun, it has serious faults? Why do people get defensive and shout "NUH-UH IT'S AWESOME" rather than trying to be objective?

I took this thread as a "should I buy this game?" sort of request. What is more useful: tons of comments saying "this game is awesome!" and leaving it at that, or an actual discussion of what does and doesn't work in the game?

I'm absolutely shocked at how I'm hearing pretty much no complaints about this game. It's lots of fun, but honestly it reminds me more of Two Worlds II more than it reminds me of Dark Souls.

BAD: The graphics and production values are absolutely terrible in places. The character models are terrible (faces in particular), and some things that were overlooked are just ridiculous (my male character spontaneously grows boobs if I put a girl's shirt on him). During the daytime, everything just looks slightly muddy, and characters and enemies sometimes spawn about 3 feet in front of you, especially if you run a lot.

GOOD AND BAD: The combat is good, but the comparisons to Dark Souls are absurd. Dark Souls doesn't get so much love and praise just because it's hard. It gets love and praise because its combat is extremely polished and the game is almost always completely fair. It's also very consistent. Dragon's Dogma's combat honestly feels more like Kingdom of Amalur's combat to me, except less polished. There's no lock-on -- this isn't necessarily a bad thing in itself, except your character is constantly changing his mind about who he wants to attack since there's weird pseudo-auto-lock-on that the game does. Sometimes enemies go right through you, and various other polish issues make the game seem very unfair at times (see the next point).

BAD: Difficulty. No, I'm not complaining that the game is hard (I love both Demon's Souls and Dark Souls). The problem is that the game is neither consistent nor fair. Getting hit by a broadsword makes my character slightly wince, but getting hit with an arrow sends me flying about 20 feet. The game is pretty tough for the first 10 or so levels, but then once you get stronger most enemies just become trash mobs (much like Amalur). The first few bosses felt absolutely epic (the hydra, anyone?), but I barely even care when I see a boss anymore -- mash and I win. And the game has a terrible habit of just tossing random deaths your way (at least early-on). This wouldn't be a problem if the game had any kind of regular auto-save, but it pretty much forces you to manually save the game every 5 minutes or so while you're in the wilderness, and saving is a slow process in this game. It's tedious.

BAD: Story and side quests. People bitch about how Skyrim's side quests were too same-y, and yet I somehow haven't seen it brought up in this game? I literally have 13 quests in my log right now that each tell me to go kill X number of Y enemy. No storyline involved with them, just do them. These are 90% of the side quests. There isn't a single interesting character in the game and the story is a mess -- the main questline is extremely disjoint and the main quests feel absolutely pointless and arbitrary at times.

GOOD: Atmosphere. The game just somehow makes me feel nostalgic -- in some ways it feels more like a King's Field successor than Demon's Souls does. The day/night cycle is one of the best that has ever appeared in an RPG.

DEBATABLE: Honestly, I still haven't made up my mind about the (almost completely lack of a) fast travel system. But it's something you should be aware of going into the game.

Overall, the game feels like more than the sum of its parts, and I'm actually enjoying it quite a bit. But I really don't understand the unadaltered praise it gets here on reddit.

This is the first time they've planned on taking them down. Every other time was just "they'll be up until at least date XYZ", not "we're taking them down on date XYZ".

There are lots of online games that have reviews written before release. It's not hard to provide review copies of a game that are able to access servers early.

It's not just games with terrible reviews that have embargoes, unfortunately. Diablo 3 is the obvious recent example -- reviewers weren't even allowed to play it until its release date.

Hair So Strong by b0redin funny

No. The GIF is slowed down from how it actually played. In the actual video, this clip takes about half a second, thus the timer doesn't change in that timeframe.

This is the same reason why most people didn't notice this when actually watching the movie.

Who do you dislike that Reddit loves? Personally, I think Richard Dawkins is an ass, and I'm an atheist. by Pistachio_handlerin AskReddit

[–]methyboy 3 points4 points ago

I don't understand. There are entire episodes devoted to making fun of Asians, Christians, Mexicans, southerners, fat people, and just about every other "group" that exists. Meg gets farted on and abused in pretty much every single episode. But when the Jewish character is the brunt of things, then it's antisemitic?

I mean, I can understand being offended by none of it or being offended by all of it. But to pick out one group and say that it's not right to make fun of them seems rather absurd to me.

A combinatorics problem - probably quite simple by DylanSAin math

[–]methyboy 8 points9 points ago

Whoa whoa whoa, before we starting going all NP-complete, let's please note that the graphs in question here are extremely simple. First, there is a trivial Hamiltonian cycle on this graph: the one where you take a single step clockwise from every city. NP-completeness gone.

Using Melchoir's comments, it should be more or less trivial (I mean that in the sense that math professors use the word) to find the number of Hamiltonian cycles.

PSN Download speeds super slow by oopse3in vita

[–]methyboy 0 points1 point ago

is this game 10.8-21.6 gig?

A standard Vita memory card is 8Gb, so no, it wouldn't make much sense to release a game that size.

The game is 3Gb.

Things that suck about the PS3 by katchison02in PS3

[–]methyboy 0 points1 point ago

Try converting those into AAC Audio with H.264 Video, which is IIRC what the PS3 uses and thus what PS3MS sends. The videos turn out significantly larger.

I was already extremely generous with the size of a Blu-Ray rip that I listed. The largest numbers I can find online for an hour of HD H.264 video that I can find is 11Gb. Is that not accurate?

[–]methyboy 0 points1 point ago*

I use MKVs that have subtitles etc and it has to encode the subtitles into the videos stream.

If you're saying that it's very computationally-expensive then you're of course right, but the same would be true of a wired connection and is irrelevant (i.e., your PC is the bottleneck, not the PS3's wireless speed).

Oblivion vs. Skyrim vs. Dark Souls by Ghostwrittenin gaming

[–]methyboy 0 points1 point ago

It's a good bit more than 6.

I've heard numbers ranging from 5 to 8 (I only remember 6 myself). At any rate, it's certainly not "a good bit" more.

Things that suck about the PS3 by katchison02in PS3

[–]methyboy 7 points8 points ago

I wirelessly stream and process MKVs constantly without a single hiccup. 54Mbps is over 23Gb per hour, so over 35Gb for an hour-and-a-half movie. A typical DVD movie rip is about 1Gb and a Blu-Ray movie rip is in the ballpark of 15Gb.

It was in reference to this series (DS, Wii side scrollers).

Oh, so when you said "they seem to make these games easier every version", you're just saying that the Wii version is easier than the DS version? Which is 100% patently false thanks to the Wii version's 9th world (please try to tell me that 9-7 is "too easy")?

Games that are actually fun to platinum by SharpEleventhin PS3

[–]methyboy 0 points1 point ago

It's not possible without going online at least a little bit. One trophy requires you to help someone else (online only, local doesn't work) start the co-op campaign after you've already finished it. And there's a trophy specifically for hugging 3 people on your PSN friends list.

Also, to do some of the co-op levels by yourself, you would need mind-boggling manual dexterity. The second-last level requires both players to be running and shooting portals at specific locations at the same time.

On the main menu, go to "extras". You can see all the cars you've driven. The cars displayed just as a black outline are ones you haven't driven yet. Cross-reference with lists online to see what they are/what they look like/where to find them.

And for all I know, insanity is always unlocked on the PS3

I can confirm that this is not the case. I bought the game used, so I didn't have the online pass (or whatever it was that you needed to get the comic). Insanity difficulty wasn't available until I completed the game.

shadow of the colossus i haven't played that game on ps3 but it is pure skill

I'm sorry, but as much as I love SotC, I can't imagine why anyone would ever put it on a list for games with a good platinum. The game requires six playthroughs to platinum. That's pretty much the definition of a mindless grind boring trophy list.
