The problem with rooting is you end up rewarding the manufacturers for crapping up the phones.

I'd rather have a phone that's 6 months old (the horror!) and not reward Samsung or HTC for locking bootloaders and not delivering upgrades.

I get similarly upset when I see the sizes of cages people buy to keep parakeets in.

I mean, if you're going to keep a parakeet caged up all day, then first off, buy two because they're flock animals. And then buy a big cage so they can fly back and forth. But ideally don't keep them in the cage.

Yeah, I got the dock for my Galaxy Nexus and it's awesome.

There are some standalone Android alarm clocks though, e.g. Archos 35 Home Connect. But none of them are terribly well reviewed.

Fault tolerance is my main reason for doing this.. not necessarily a backup solution. My current setup is a single 2TB drive in a single machine.. and I'm worried about if when it fails, I will lose everything.
