Watching the clips on youtube, it does look very familiar. I had no idea Kate Winslet was in it, I just remember it being scary, but I'd have been 6 at the time. (Though only 5 years before Demon Headmaster, not what I'd call a long time.) I'll watch more to confirm and mark this thread accordingly.

No, I remember Bugs, and it wasn't that. I'm actually thinking now it was CITV, and it was certainly on after school a night or two a week.

I'm pretty sure it was a series, but I'm not 100% sure. 90% or so.

I know there was the "Salamander computer" storyline in Demon Headmaster, but it's not that.

I'd use max flash sync speed and then use aperture to get the ambient exposure to what I want

When shooting with flash indoors I usually bump ISO and drop the shutter speed to get a nice ambient balance, and set aperture to get the DOF I want.

I guess I've got some experimenting to do. Thanks!

Thanks; I wasn't sure if the flash would see it as overly dark and increase its output power.

Two side questions:

I have an OM lens that I sometimes use. Clearly, the camera doesn't know what the aperture is, so here I couldn't rely on TTL at all and would have to set the flash up manually?
Using the flash for fill with an ND16 filter, the subject backlit by the sun: am I better having the shutter at 1/160 (max sync speed), or perhaps using a darker filter and dropping down to 1/40 or so to get more ambient light? My aim is to get a natural "magic hour" portrait where the light isn't harsh. (I have some gels to balance too.)

No that all makes sense, and fortunately it's stuff I already (hopefully) have pretty fixed in my mind! Thanks for confirming it all though. For portraiture I actually like the m43 format since I get the exposure offered by f1.8 without the thin focus plane that 100mm FX brings.

Sorry, yes, I do understand this about the aperture, I just explained it poorly. I meant 2.8->5.6 purely in that the depth of field is larger, and nothing to do with exposure or other discussions of aperture.

What is new to me in all this is that a lens' increased focal length will reduce the DOF; I had assumed this was due to the change in field of view due to the sensor crop. Thinking about it now though, this is entirely obvious: with a 18-55 kit lens, I can get narrower DOF at the narrowest end of the focal range, and this is why portrait lenses at ~100mm (35mm effective) are nice. I had first thought that my 50mm 1.8 would give the same DOF as a 100mm 1.8, and to get the equivalent FOV I'd just have to crop the image in post a bit. Now I realise, of course not.

So I think my confusion lies here: they don't from a technical standpoint about the size and other characteristics of the sensor.

However, smaller sensors have a smaller angle of view, so give an effective increase in focal length. And it's this increase in focal length that also increases the f2.8 number to (m43 example) f5.6, meaning greater depth of field.

Thanks, that's exactly what I was trying to understand.

Point sources translate (through the optics) to a small circle on the sensor. If this circle fits within a pixel, then it appears acceptably sharp to the sensor, and us, so is within the depth of field "area". The larger these pixels, obviously the larger the circle of confusion can be and still fit inside a pixel to appear sharp, so the more light sources will appear in sharp focus, thus larger DOF.

the effect of using longer focal lengths for the same FOV and subject distance is much more significant.

I had thought that this didn't really affect the DOF technically, it just appears to, since the background becomes more compressed with larger focal distances.

Right, so (sticking with DX crop), the aperture in terms of DOF is roughly 1.5 * 2.8 = 4.2, simply because the focal length is changing (effectively).

Software will always be surrounded by conspiracy claims (especially encryption software). Just accept that and move on.

I do, I just think that general community consensus about a product can say a lot. If lots of people (with suitable knowledge) trust something, it's more likely that it can be trusted.
