Nurse refuses student inhaler during asthma attack (teenager's mother finds him locked inside the nurse's office, unconscious on the floor.) by Sugar_Skullin politics

[–]meggyver 1 point2 points ago

Bottom Line: She is a nurse who didn't even call 911 with a patient who was in extreme distress. If this isn't cut and dry child endangerment I don't know what is. She wants to choose her job over someone's life? Fine, be that person. But at least call 911.

How I feel walking into work this morning through the NATO protests by schne10134in chicago

I would assume facial recognition technology. Say, they're following John Doe while he's protesting and causing trouble because he's under investigation. You're standing right next to John Doe even though you have no idea who he is. Now you're in a photo with him and the FBI will be wondering, "Hey, who's this guy?" Your photo is in a government database somewhere and a few hours later they'll pull it from the DMV and boom you've got a file. The FBI has already said they have detailed files on peaceful protesters http://www.aclu.org/national-security/fbi-intelligence-bulletin-no-89

The FBI has been shown to profile and keep records on as many people as possible in attendance at protests. If shit ends up going down it's in your best interest in this day and age to not have your face visible.

They've been bringing extra cops from other jurisdictions into the city to crack skulls. I'm assuming that a lot of these cops are the type that are sitting around jerking off to old protest videos from the 60's just hoping they get a chance to punch a hippie just like their grandpa did.

Cops don't always reasonably react to protesters and if you think protests are always escalated by the protesters and not the police you are being naive. Not that protesters aren't also often to blame, but just look at a lot of the brutality that happened during the Occupy protests. Cops came in, pepper sprayed a bunch of people for no reason and then started looking for a fight. I assume that will happen a lot this weekend.

Everyone keeps saying they're dressing like a protester to stay safe. If shit hits the fan it will not be the protesters you have to worry about. It will be the cops. They will be the ones blindly grabbing anyone that even looks like a protester and throwing them in paddy wagons. Protesters will be too busy breaking stuff and fighting with cops.

Amtrak Train accessible camping from Chicago? by meggyverin CampingandHiking

[–]meggyver[S] 0 points1 point ago

Thank you! I just looked it up and this totally seems doable. I could bring a bike with pannier bags or surely find a local that would be willing to give me a lift for a few bucks. Carbondale is now top of my list, Thanks!

I would love to do Glacier eventually, it just seems so daunting right now. I mean... BEARS.

I don't always go camping, but when I do, I prefer BEER CAN STOVE by FeaturedDa_manin CampingandHiking

I just bought a Trangia on Amazon yesterday after several failed beer can stoves that I tried to build. Glad to see that people really do like them.

My 7 year old son told me (a single father) that he wants to be a girl and that he's always felt this way. Is he transgender? What should I do? by confusedfather28in AskReddit

[–]meggyver 0 points1 point ago*

I'm a trans woman and I've heard this similar story from a lot of cis women. "When I was a little girl I wanted to be a boy. But now I'm a completely normal and well adjusted grown woman." But I have never heard similar stories from a cis gendered man. Is anyone here a cis gendered man that grew up wanting to be a girl but now wouldn't rather wish to be female? OP, I would suggest to take your son to therapy and tell him it's about the bullying, but make sure the therapist is well versed in gender issues and let him or her know about your son's gender issues.

Also, if he ends up being confident that he is transgender, please don't take it with less seriousness because he's only 7. Nearly all mtf trans folk I know (including myself) knew what they were when they were his age and wish they could have transitioned as early as possible to not miss out on the life they wish they could have lived.

This is what comes with a society that legislates sexuality by wonderless2686in pics

Yes, I have been to Nashville, Knoxville, and Memphis. They are extremely neat cities mostly filled with racist and homophobic people, but with a small population of really cool people. If you live in Nashville and think it is a progressive city you really need to move to an actual progressive city.

You're being downvoted because your argument (which is phrased as a question) is ridiculous. When you stand up for someone that is being bullied, you are not being a bully - you are standing up for what is right.

I think what you mean is "The land that Tennessee occupies is very beautiful, but the state itself is run by a bunch of douchebags. Nashville is one of the most fun cities there is as long as you are not a racial or sexual minority."

The Biolite stove is finally available... by workroomin camping

[–]meggyver 3 points4 points ago

I ordered mine too! I signed up late so I'm supposed to get early July delivery. I'm so excited for this, and not just for camping. It seems like a really great thing just to have in case of power outage and such.

The Avengers: Why Pirates Failed To Prevent A Box Office Record by DrJulianBashirin technology

[–]meggyver 2 points3 points ago

They are not all lost DVD sales either. I have downloaded cams for movies that I eventually bought the DVD for, because the cams are horrible quality and not something you want to keep/rewatch a million times.

Edit: Just like "The Avengers." I'm went to see it on opening day and will buy the blu-ray, but I'll probably download the cam of it just so I can rewatch some of the better scenes while I wait for the blu-ray release.

Loyola University eliminates the sale of bottled water on campus by thegreatsharkhuntin chicago

[–]meggyver 4 points5 points ago

Well, I assume this will increase the number of people who remember to carry a reusable bottle 100% of the time. I assume this will especially be true for people going to someplace like the library where a water source is readily available. Also, the "convenience" as you put it is what is so bad for the environment. Soda & Gatorade aren't freely available by walking a short distance to a fountain, but water is. Bottled water is ridiculous and horrible for the environment.

[–]meggyver 2 points3 points ago

Shipping water in bottles makes zero sense, as water high quality potable water is already freely available. There are water fountains that you can drink or refill a bottle from. I'm sure that instead of selling water in bottles you will soon see a lot more empty reusable bottles for sale around campus.

Chicago considers a tax on sugary drinks such as soda. by thelapoubellein chicago

[–]meggyver 0 points1 point ago

People can't be assured of that though, because it doesn't happen. Much like the speeding ticket cameras this is just another money grab. If they can paint the issue as a bad thing (sugary sodas, any speeding near a school or park, etc.) they then tax the hell out of it. And the money never ends up where they say it will.

[–]meggyver -4 points-3 points ago

And all of those industries rely on a strong middle class. Which these taxes will push away.

Chicago considers a tax on sugary drinks such as soda. by thelapoubellein chicago

[–]meggyver -2 points-1 points ago

Yes, and what is Chicago's primary source of income? Do we actually do anything? If taxes rise that pushes out the middle class. They then leave for greener pastures as do the businesses that employed them. Our tourism is great, but that'll start to feel a hurt if the middle class is squeezed out (which would then cause a rise in crime and lead to fewer tourists).

[–]meggyver -2 points-1 points ago

I don't know why you're being downvoted. If they keep raising taxes then people will leave. The only people left will be the poor that can't move away. Then everything goes to shit. Nickel and diming everyone to death with these stupid little taxes will kill this city.

Anyone who doubts that men want sex more than women need only talk to a transgender man who has started taking testosterone. Every transman I have ever known has said his sex drive went from 10 to 100 immediately after testosterone started taking effect.
