Prolonging a game while rewarding early participation by NegativeKin math

[–]mccoyn 0 points1 point ago

Split up the 24 hours into 144 10-minute slots. Assign a fixed number of points to each slot. It could be 6944, but you will want to put more points (possibly double or more) in the early slots and less points in the later slots. At the end of every 10 minutes, you divide up the points for that slot to everyone who asked in that 10 minutes. If no one shows up in a 10 minute slot, divide up those points in the remaining slots.

Players are encouraged to spread out and try to get a slot all to themselves, but the large rewards at the beginning encourage early participation.

That does not reward early participation.

Our eyes have three different types of color sensitive cells in our eyes that correpond to red, green and blue. What we percieve as yellow is light that activates both the red and green sensitive cells. Therefore yellow is a mix of red and green and is not a primary color.

I like the idea that sigkircheis mentioned about standardizing on the galactic plane. So in a solar system, up is whichever pole of the star points closest to the galactic up. Obviously it will take some civilizations a long time to adjust as they encounter the larger space-faring cultures.

Yes. Every business in existence places themselves in a position of control over something that is desirable and then exploits that position to extort money. They want to be between you and happiness. This is literally how the economy works.

I don't even know my emotions on this. Offended, possibly? by PurpleHadoukensin geek

I've heard that nerds celebrate the work of others and geeks celebrate their own work. Of course this means the nerds always want to hang out with the geeks and the geeks don't mind. Also neither group finds the normal social minutia to be important. From the outside it is very hard to tell the groups apart.

I'm making a set of two internet connected chess boards. Design help? by Master_Novicein electronics

[–]mccoyn 0 points1 point ago

Put a conductive base on the pieces and two pads on the squares that are connected when a piece is in place. The pads are connected to the microcontroller as a Keyboard matrix circuit. A similar arrangement can be used to put an LED on each square.

You can get a PCB made for the board that has the pads and connections built in. At Seeedstudio, it would cost $40 to get the 2 boards in 4 pieces each.

Turn Absolutely Anything In The World Into A Button by bukanglabalabain gadgets

[–]mccoyn 0 points1 point ago

capacitive switch (I assume it has to be that, not an actual current carrying circuit)

They are measuring resistance. Each contact has a 50 MΩ resistor pulling it up to Vcc. If a person touches the contact with one hand and the earth contact with the other hand, it will pull it down with somewhere around 2 MΩ resistance and the voltage will change.

Since they are talking about less than a uA of current they will have problems with noise, which they say they filter in software. I suspect that this makes the response time slower. In the videos they show people playing music and video games, so maybe it isn't too bad.

Turn Absolutely Anything In The World Into A Button by bukanglabalabain gadgets

[–]mccoyn 6 points7 points ago

Won't work as a button. The person has to be connected to both the "earth" on this board and the doorknob which is connected to a button contact on the board.

You could attach the earth to the latch in the door frame and the button contact to the door knob and detect when they are disconnected.

Cycling May Diminish Sexual Pleasure in Women, Lead to Numbness of the Genitalia by roundjerichoin science

[–]mccoyn 0 points1 point ago

When I got mine 8 years ago they were very expensive. They aren't popular enough to be mass-produced so they are largely hand-made. They put all the good gear on them as well since at that point it adds a lower percentage to the total cost.

Recumbent bikes are all about taking proper care of your weight so you can focus on your exercise. You are supported on your ass, not leaning forward towards more sensitive areas. Your back is supported. You never put any weight on your wrists. Your neck is in a proper bipedal organism position.

Yes, the power leaks out and is absorbed by the rest of the atmosphere. If you powered up the entire atmosphere, there is nowhere for it to leak out to.

The first few times I did it, I used wire nuts and electrical tape. It was a tangled mess and every time I had to rework it, everything was sticky from removing the old tape. The last time I did it I soldered and heatshrinked using the proper harness. Looks beautiful.

Stick in three pieces by lilfrostin math

[–]mccoyn 0 points1 point ago

Well, we could measure "small" in 1/meters. That way, something that has more "smallness" will have a greater magnitude when you measure how "small" it is. Then, multiply by three will give you three times as "small". We don't do that, but we could.

Global Car Makers Announce 15-Minute EV Charging Standard by pokerkidasin technology

[–]mccoyn -1 points0 points ago

You are probably right, but I think you are overestimating. The engine in a hybrid can be much smaller because it never needs to get the car moving from a complete stop. Since it never has to deal with a heavy torque demand it can last longer.

Global Car Makers Announce 15-Minute EV Charging Standard by pokerkidasin technology

[–]mccoyn 3 points4 points ago

There are different battery designs optimized for different charging rates. You could design a battery that can be charged fast all the time and slow-charging would reduce its life. Unfortunately, Tesla and all other electric vehicles in the near future are likely to take a more general approach and optimize their batteries for slow charging.

help with step motors please by salomon102in electronics

[–]mccoyn 0 points1 point ago

also when i dissasembled it and reasembled it it seemed to work better but still not good, anyone know how to fix this?

I've done the exact same thing before. I think the alignment of the parts inside the stepper motor can make a big difference. You might try a few rounds of disassemble-reassemble-test to try and get lucky. Also, when you tighten the screws you should switch back and forth between them (like replacing a tire) so that they all advance together and are all tight at the end. Rotating the shaft before everything is completely locked down might also help to align stuff.

A Magnetic Rotary Encoder detects the strength of the magnetic field in two perpendicular directions and uses that to determine the orientation of a magnet relative to the sensor.
