TROPHY CASE

Was just walking the pooches this morning and passed this. by Clandestinedin WTF

[–]mcanerin 4 points5 points ago

This looks more like schizophrenia than religion or bad lawn decorating skills.

Crazy people use powerful things to lend credence to the power of their beliefs. God, CIA, Aliens, Secret Cabals, etc.

It really doesn't matter what they use at the end of the day, it's like crazy content with an interchangeable CSS-like presentation based on what's available and familiar to them at the time.

Can someone explain to me what legal right a video game manufacturer has to prohibit used video game sales? by p_U_c_Kin politics

[–]mcanerin 2 points3 points ago

My problem with the software as a license idea is that many game designers seem to want it both ways: It's a license all the way up to the point where you scratch or lose a disc. Then suddenly it's a product and they want to charge you for replacements (or make you pay full price again).

Some companies get it, but others seem to want it both ways.

Canada had lost sight of religious freedom as human right, Baird says - The Globe and Mail by Huxley135in canada

[–]mcanerin 15 points16 points ago

My dirty little secret: I don't think religion should be a separate human right.

It should fall under freedom of expression and freedom of association. There is nothing significant about religion that is not covered by those two things.

Giving it special status when it's already covered is an attempt to unconstitutionally mix politics and religion, IMO.

I got the impression her primary motive was to support and defend her pastor. She kept coming back to "I agree with him" anytime she got too confused to continue.

Open Letter To Jay Leno: "Thanks for thieving my shit." by justinisntfunnyin funny

[–]mcanerin 0 points1 point ago

Sounds like someone needs to create an automatic claim dispute system as a countermeasure.

If you run around claiming infringement 10,000 times a month, you should also have to deal with 10,000 "prove it"s a month. If you can't prove it, you shouldn't be claiming it.

Open Letter To Jay Leno: "Thanks for thieving my shit." by justinisntfunnyin funny

[–]mcanerin 0 points1 point ago

Hmmm. Thinking about it, it's settled law that you can't do anything automatically that you can't do in person.

There was a case where some guy rigged a shotgun to go off if a cat or whatever entered his garden, and the contraption proceeded to shoot some kid retrieving his ball.

He claimed that "he" didn't do it, the contraption did, but the court didn't buy it.

I wonder if that could be used here? If you can't do a DMCA in person, you can't hide behind a program to do it for you. Clearly this isn't a case where it's a one-time accident or software glitch.

It actually seems like it's the kind of thing that a class action suit might work on. You want to fuck with other people's stuff? Then you have to spend the time to actually make sure you are doing something you are allowed to do.

[throwaway] had my first SEO success! by 1234567891poiuytrewqin SEO

Congrats! That's actually one of the things I like about my job. If you think about it, an SEO manipulates the worlds largest, most powerful computer system daily, for fun and profit. Sometimes I feel like a hacker even though I'm doing perfectly normal SEO stuff.

"Let's see... I put this KW here, do a couple of things over there, push a few buttons, and... OMG I'm at the top! I AM GOD OF THE INTERNET!"

I've been doing this for many years and it still blows my mind.

RCMP ‘to ease Canadians into the idea’ of U.S. agents in Canada by Slappy_MC_Garglenutzin worldnews

[–]mcanerin 10 points11 points ago

Yeah the unsupervised arrests part is what bothers me the most. I'm ok with cooperation and coordination, but not with just giving away jurisdiction.

I wonder if an alternative would be to create a joint border area (no mans land buffer) where authorities on both sides can operate. Just thinking out loud.

RCMP ‘to ease Canadians into the idea’ of U.S. agents in Canada by Slappy_MC_Garglenutzin worldnews

[–]mcanerin 30 points31 points ago

I don't see why this could not be handled just using a hot pursuit rule. I get that if you are chasing some criminal that having to stop at the border is not a good idea (everyone will just head for the border). Then the rule should be that you have to stop and hold them until the local authorities complete the arrest (no dragging them back across the border). And make it work both ways.

What I'm not comfortable with is just authorizing foreign police to operate in Canada without supervision or an immediate necessity.

Nitpick 1: the article implies that this is all about US agents entering Canada, but the rule works both ways - Canadian agents would be allowed to operate in the US, as well.

Nitpick 2: Canadians and Americans have been operating joint NORAD bases for decades, with Canadian generals in control of parts of the US nuclear arsenal as part of their regular shift (including one infamous incident where a flock of seagulls almost started WW3). Joint operations and agents working in each others countries are not really "news"

Reddit, as a classical musician, tell me what we could do better. What is it about classical music that keeps you away from our concerts? by a12345678910in AskReddit

[–]mcanerin 0 points1 point ago

The music.

It's not that it's bad, it's that EVERYTHING IS A COVER SONG.

Imagine going to rock concerts over and over for years, with hundreds of different bands, but they all only played Aerosmith covers. Over and over and over again.

I love Aerosmith songs, but I'd get sick and tired of them after a while. Even if every single band changed the tunes just a bit.

There are a lot of great classical pieces, but it's still a limited list at the end of the day. It's the ultimate Oldies station.

You want to get more audiences, start doing something different like Vanessa Mae, Bond, and Trans-Siberian Orchestra do.

Or add a laser light show, or dancers, or something. Disney did a great job with Fantasia.

But after the 7 billionth time hearing Vivadi's Four Seasons (which I love), it's hard to get excited about seeing a concert playing it. I have it on CD, MP3, FLAC, and concert DVD by this time.

What I'd like to see a lot more of is NEW music written in the classical style, with big bands and lots of energy and emotion. That would be awesome.

Would having a localised domain have a negative SEO impact, if its being used to target a completely different country? by WheresTheBossKeyin SEO

[–]mcanerin 2 points3 points ago

Yes, a .info, .net or even a .eu would be better. .EU is odd since it's intended to indicate a "European" site, but geolocates to nothing.

Since you are trying to indicate a tech connection, I'd recommend .net or .info.

Would having a localised domain have a negative SEO impact, if its being used to target a completely different country? by WheresTheBossKeyin SEO

[–]mcanerin 3 points4 points ago

You cannot change geo-targeting in Google webmaster tools if you are using a ccTLD like .it, so you will be geolocated to Italy whether you like it or not, just like people who buy .la, .fm and .tv domains are geolocated to Laos, Micronesia, and Tuvalu, respectively.

Technically this won't "hurt" you - you won't be penalized in rankings. But it may feel like you are being penalized.

Remember the old funny WW2 movies where the officer asks for a volunteer for some dangerous mission to step forward and our hero smartly stands perfectly still? But then everyone else takes a step backward, leaving him out front?

That (in reverse) is what happens when you are not properly geolocated. Although you are not penalized, most of your competition (the ones who are geolocated) get to take advantage of the additional ranking benefits that you don't. They take a step forward in rankings while you stand still.

It's possible to rank well anyway, but you are starting off with a distinct lack of advantage in any market other than Italy, in your case.

A public schoolgirl who died from a brain hemorrhage at 13 has saved eight lives by donating her organs. by nomdewebin worldnews

Fair enough. I disagree with you, but I understand your position and respect it.

From my perspective, I think that if I'd want someone to donate organs to keep me alive, then the golden rule means I should also donate.

It's illogical to use a highly unlikely theoretical possibility to make a decision affecting very real and immediate consequences.

Why go to work or school today when there is possibility you might win the lottery? Why eat food if you can't guarantee it's not poisoned?

What about this: if you are open to the possibility that a medical professional might decide to let you die for your organs, why are you not open to the possibility that a medical professional might try harder to save a "good" person who wants to saves lives like them, over a "bad" person that is selfish and is ok with letting others die?

(I used quotes because objectively someone is not a good or bad person based on their organ donor status, but in this example we are talking about a doctor making moral decisions regarding patients, so "good" and "bad" are on the table.)

I mean, once you open that debate that medical professionals may decide to save or not save you based on their own personal feelings, there are a lot of decisions they could make like that - are you the same race as them? Same religion? Why save someones life if they are going to hell in your view anyway?

Bottom line, you might want to think hard about why you think what you do. Why are you not worried about all those other possibilities, only this one?

Throwaway time! What politically incorrect beliefs do you hold? by Leap20in AskReddit

I don't think smoking pot is good for you. Lighting shit on fire and sucking the smoke into your lungs is not healthy, I don't care what it is.

Given a perfect world, alcohol, tobacco and pot would all be out of favor. But as long as tobacco and alcohol are legal, there is no reason to ban pot.

But that doesn't mean you should smoke it. It's still stupid to damage yourself on purpose.

I see this like the parents holding the kids hostage, and should not be encouraged.

I think that we need to just stop increasing welfare funding when you have more kids. Just allocate a fixed sum that is sufficient, then deal with the remainder with the deadbeat dad laws, unemployment requirements and handicapped allowances (if you can't work, then I'm ok with helping you out as a taxpayer).

It's not like I get a raise from work when I had more kids. I made due with my current paycheck and took responsibility.

There was a study that showed that many people who survived cancer still smoked and did other cancer-causing activities. Apparently this was super interesting and insightful.

I wrote a TL;DR that said "Studies show that people who get cancer, including survivors, tend to do things that cause cancer."

And then the downvotes came...

Legal loophole allows GM to avoid paying federal taxes... still by unhandme78in worldnews

[–]mcanerin 2 points3 points ago

I'm not sure I'd call the ability to carry losses forward a "loophole". Most tax laws in most countries allow this.

They had 18B in losses. They have had 13B in gains. 5B to go and they are back paying taxes.

According to the article, they currently pay a "substantial" amount of state and local tax, so it's not like they are avoiding taxation.

I'm not a big fan of financial shenanigans letting the rich take advantage of the poor, but this specific example just isn't that.

HAHA! I have a 50 megabit connection and (buffering) damn.

Sometimes things that can go fast get stuck, especially when there are lots of other things that are trying to go fast in the same place.

It's like if you run down the hallway when it's empty you can go really fast, but if you try to do it when everyone is in between classes you keep bumping into people and go slower.

Your video is bumping into other videos and games and stuff.
