Demon Hunter skills opinion by slingshot322in diablo3

[–]mattgif 0 points1 point ago

Rapid fire is the skill I use to down elites in Hell (haven't made it to inferno). I stacked a ton of +vit gear on my templar, and stay in smoke screen as much as possible (have lingering rune, prep +chance not to have CD rune; main attack in bola +additional disc rune). If you can't be seen, you can absolutely mow down baddies.

Nether tenticles may be better, but I don't have it yet so I don't know.

The latter is actually how I pronounce 'penguin'. Never knew I was an anomaly!

So it sounds like "penguin" minus the "pe"?

Truth does not demand belief. by sci101in atheism

[–]mattgif 3 points4 points ago

That is a point that the title suggests, but the actual cartoon undermines this. Its actual message is something more along the lines of "when something is actually true, you don't need constant affirmation of this fact to be secure in your beliefs."

Truth does not demand belief. by sci101in atheism

[–]mattgif 2 points3 points ago

I also found this quip odd. I thought, before checking the subreddit, that it might actually lead to a nuanced discussion of what does demand belief, and how the set of propositions that demand belief differs from the set of propositions that is true. That is, I thought there was going to be some bitchin' epistemology getting done.

What demands belief are propositions that we have justification for, or maybe reasons for, or maybe propositions that we are caused to believe in the right sort of way. That would have been an awesome debate.

Even wrt to atheism/theism/agnosticism, there could have been a sweet discussion along the lines you suggest: if we justifiably believe something, is that reason for thinking it's true? Certainly it doesn't entail its truth. What sort of justification, if any, does the lack of evidence provide?

But nope, childish sniping. The world is so much more interesting than /r/atheism lets on, even within its narrow scope.

Couldn't many residential trees be harvested for lumber? by Triviaandwordplayin woodworking

[–]mattgif 0 points1 point ago

Makes sense. I should have said that chopping down still living trees in residential areas purely for the purpose of using them as lumber is generally frowned upon.

Couldn't many residential trees be harvested for lumber? by Triviaandwordplayin woodworking

[–]mattgif 1 point2 points ago

In my area (western Mass.) there are people who drive around after big storms looking for fallen trees. They'll ask the property owner if they can chop it up for use in their woodshop.

Chopping down still living trees--especially big old ones--is generally frowned upon. Some trees are also legally protected (due to their age, location, etc.).

Bad luck on the AA deal, man. Have you tried H&M's tees from their basics line? They're $5-7, and quite good as undershirts.

Really? You didn't realize that the way you write something, or turn a phrase, or your word choice can impact your perceived ethos? You just today learned that people can make authoritative claims on the internet?

Guess what I just learned...

Your comment was written with an air of authority, as if you know something about this. You say "to add some context" as if you know something about the context. It turns out you were just wildly speculating based on quickly read (and misunderstood) Wikipedia article. That's the very definition of talking out of your ass.

So tired of this lazy criticism - THESE are yacht owners, not young dudes in slim chinos and polos by jdbeein malefashionadvice

[–]mattgif 1 point2 points ago

There are negative connotations with the yacht-owner stereotype too: uptight, snobby, speaking with a distinct vocal fry, drinks the blood of the poor, etc.

If someone is going for that style, saying that they look like a yacht club member will be like a pat on the back. If they're not, however, it may draw their attention to the fact that they're heading down the wrong aesthetic direction.

"You think a guy who owns a $3 million yacht would wear that $125 jacket? COME ON!"

According to the stereotype, many wear clothes that look like that. And people who level this criticism are generally addressing the look, not the brand. The cut and color palate of GANT Rugger screams 50s/60s yacht club aesthetic. I don't know how else to succinctly capture the look and feel of that line of clothing.

[–]mattgif 4 points5 points ago

I think the critic means something along the lines of what I spelled out, and I think that's fairly clear from context. If you don't think that amounts to a criticism, fine, but that's a concern about value judgment and not lack of clarity. Maybe you like that sort of look, and they don't. But it can still be informative ("gee, I didn't realize I was coming off that way! Maybe it's my Greek-fisherman's hat!").

Would you think a comment like "you look like a hobo" is similarly lazy and vague (after all, not all hobos look alike)? I would find it a succinct way of summing up a fashion, and suggesting that the manner of dress embodies certain stereotypes, for better or worse.

[–]mattgif 46 points47 points ago

Wait. So when people say that certain clothes have a "yacht style" about them, they're not actually saying that the person in question owns a yacht? And further, not every single yacht owner dresses like that? Blowin' my mind jdbee, blowin' my mind.

Let's hope that in the future people say things like "you look like a yachting/country club stereotype such as those found in movies like 'Some Like it Hot' or 'Caddyshack', though I do not suspect you actually own a yacht and acknowledge that not everyone who owns a yacht dresses like that." That'll help prevent people from making false yacht-ownership attributions.
