[Weekly Discussion Thread] Scientists, what are the biggest misconceptions in your field? by fastparticlesin askscience

[–]mattc286 5 points6 points ago

Absolutely. In my opinion, the biggest misconception in the field is that we are looking for a cure for cancer. This is related to the "cancer is one disease myth" as well. The goal of cancer research is not to cure cancer, it's to turn cancer into a manageable chronic disease that people can live with for decades before dying of something else. We do ourselves a disservice when we claim to be searching for "the cure for cancer" as we lose the trust of the public when it invariably doesn't cure cancer.

The correlation between explosions and money making in Michael Bay movies. by palanoidin movies

[–]mattc286 0 points1 point ago

There is a non-parametric test for correlation, but I'm not sure how you would apply it here. Maybe normalize each variable and rank the films? Then see if the ranks are correlated??

The correlation between explosions and money making in Michael Bay movies. by palanoidin movies

[–]mattc286 604 points605 points ago

This is not how you show a correlation. You need a regression curve, with number of explosions on one axis and money made on another. Also, even if you wanted to plot two separate graphs of this data, you should use bar graphs as opposed to line graphs, as the data on the abscissa (x-axis) are not continuous but are discrete (there's no half movies).

Bad news for pseudoskeptics: according to a massive OHRI study, flu shots during pregnancy have not only been confirmed safe, but actually have some unexpected benefits by horse_you_rode_in_onin skeptic

[–]mattc286 13 points14 points ago

I really think the term you should use here is "vaccine deniers" as opposed to "pseudoskeptics". I'm not even sure what that means, but I think any true skeptic is willing to accept evidence such as this trial.

Just read it last night. It was pretty good. I really liked the characters. It's very difficult to develop character in such a short story, but I think Gene, Elizabeth, dream Elizabeth, and the nanny come across as full characters. The pacing was great, as well. Anyway, I would definitely buy a full length book by you in the future. Good luck, and keep writing!

Anecdotally, the ticks are terrible in NC this year as well. Already picked 3 off my dog (who is on Frontline Plus for fleas and ticks), one off my roommate, and 2 were found on the carpet in my apartment that probably fell off one of us. And that's only from 2 days of hiking.

That's right. Fun Fact: Dr. Strangelove also features the first film appearance by a young James Earl Jones as the bombardier.

I always make up some mnemonic device for remembering reference numbers. This is much easier for Southwest Airlines because they only use letters. But for this one, I might go with: "With 887 redditors, 3 cats win."

While I'm always for a little Republican bashing, the amendment clearly had plenty of support from Democrats and independents. Let's not forget that the battle to educate and change hearts includes people who are much more similar to us than we might feel comfortable to admit.
