Congratulations!!

"Self-published" is not in any way analogous to "published" by emdeemcdin books

This was definitely true ten years ago. It is an outdated concept.

I have published three books with traditional literary presses. I have published one book with an academic press (Johns Hopkins). I am now taking matters into my own hands and have published my newest novel myself. It has been (substantively and copy) edited by three highly qualified editors from the book business, and the design and layout has been done professionally. The reviews (from intelligent readers who are not related to me ;) ) have been really good so far. As a self-published author I receive a significantly greater proportion of the proceeds than I would receive through a publisher, I can get the book out two years before a publisher would ever be able to get around to it, and I find I care more about promoting my book when I can monitor sales on a daily basis. The world is changing and while self-publishing and being traditionally published are not the same thing because there is no third party vetting the book BEFORE it is published, there are now thousands of people vetting it AFTER it is published, so the good books will still rise to the top. How they get there is immaterial. And as far as I can tell, most readers today have no idea if they are reading a self-published or established-press book.

TL;DR - "Self-published" is not the same as "other-published," but it doesn't matter any more.

My kindle book is also free today (Sunday, May 6) if you'd like to check it out. It's my first novel, and it won an award when it was first published a few decades ago. CreateSpace and Kindle have given it new legs, and I couldn't be happier that new readers have discovered it. (It's lit fic.) by marywwriterin writing

You can download the Kindle app for free onto laptops and phones and ipads. If you want to do that, I mean. :) I don't have a Kindle either but I read Kindle ebooks all the time.

Former pastor accused of killing his wife. Current pastor says, "It’s a very shocking thing to even imagine anybody being accused of this, let alone . . . a Christian.” by marywwriterin atheism

Sounds like the replacement pastor has the devil inside her too. Although of course if I don't believe in god, I don't get to believe in the devil, either. :)

I guess that if it had been an atheist, or a Jew, or a Jain, or a Muslim, it would have been less shocking.

Fine predicament: don't believe what the mayor is saying, don't believe what the local paper is saying.

The best mangoes in the world? by marywwriterin toronto

Who guessed that a post about mangoes would get as many downvotes as upvotes. I have noted before that Reddit can be ridiculous, and I'll note it again.

Bank error in my favor, and I returned it. Am I an idiot? by marywwriterin AskReddit

[–]marywwriter[S] 2 points3 points ago

Not really, since I don't believe in Zeus. I should cross-post this to Atheism just to prove we're not all lacking in moral judgement.

I desperately needed the $30 when I turned it in.

Ahhh. Never thought of being that strategic. :)

That's what I think, too. We have new $50s and they are very thin and very slippery. (Canada.) But it didn't slip in between two twenties -- the machine thought it was a bill and counted it out to me: I just got 4 x $20 and 1 x $50. I think it was a human error and wouldn't have been traceable.

If it had been $10 million, I'd have known for sure they'd notice it. In this situation, i was pretty sure they wouldn't know what had happened when they didn't balance, and would just write it off. But I still couldn't do it.

That's what I did. They were appreciative. Took down all the info (my bank card number, a copy of the ATM slip, etc.) They almost forgot to replace the $50 with a new $20. I had to remind them, and one of the tellers who was involved in the subsequent discussion wondered aloud why the hell I would get $20. Sigh.
