Duolingo has just added a beta to learn French from English, and English from Spanish. by AncillaryCorollaryin languagelearning

Yes!!! I've been anxiously waiting for French since the site was released.

My coworker has been working very hard on his new Android app, SnapNPlay. Take a picture of sheet music and it will play it back to you by mandlarin Music

[–]mandlar[S] 0 points1 point ago

You can download it here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.snapnplaydemo.android

Demo restricts you to only one key/staff. Paid version unlocks everything.

He's been pushing out a lot of updates since he released this a month or so ago. You can now edit/add notes and save your scans to the filesystem to reopen later. It's pretty much a mini-composer app right night.

p.s. I apologize for his video quality, he needs to get a tripod.

Which to me is odd, because most of the local people around WFU don't usually go to Wake.

I've lived near 10-15 min away from Wake my entire life and have absolutely nothing to do with that university. I ended up going to UNC. I know of maybe one or two people from my high school that went to Wake. Everyone else went to UNC, State, UNCG, UNCW, etc.

3 Hours of the 360 version: First thoughts. by BluApplesin Minecraft

I think I found my answer:

A lot has been made about the multiplayer component in the Xbox 360 version of Minecraft, and this is one of the areas where the game both succeeds and stumbles. The local multiplayer allows for up to four players to enjoy the game in split-screen, which you’ll quickly get used to despite it being a bit jarring at first. The online component also works quite well, with easy “drop in, drop-out” mechanics that makes it easy to join a game and start building. The drawback is mainly relative to what the PC offers, since the Xbox 360 version does not have dedicated servers.

If you want to play in a world that a friend created, they need to be online and playing at the same time. Likewise, the quoted PC connectivity does not appear to be operational at the time of this review, as no option to search for PC servers is even available. For the time being, I recommend limiting your expectations to playing over Xbox Live.

How do "servers" work with friends? How does it handling state between playing sessions with friends? Does the "server" and it's data belong to one of the xbox players? Does it share them between users so you don't have to rely on one player to always be online? Is it hosted by xbox? How exactly does this work?

Flipboard for Android Leaks by oneshotazin Android

[–]mandlar 5 points6 points ago

Not necessarily true. It depends on the license given by the developer. If the developer only licensed the free application under a certain condition (for a specific phone, manufacturer, birthdate, whatever) then it is ONLY legally permissible to have the application through that means.

This is why things such as Creative Commons or GPL exists.

For example, I could use CC-BY-NC (non commercial) to give away something so long as it isn't sold. It would be unlawful for you to break that license by taking my work and then selling it for a profit. I don't know what Flipboard's license might be, but it could something along a similar line.

Does anyone else think the new /r/android rules made this place a whole lot more boring? by archon810in Android

[–]mandlar 2 points3 points ago

There's a difference in moderating an off topic iOS bashing thread vs moderating a genuine thread about Android, for example the rules about Android questions. I'm not saying there should be no moderation, but if you are heavily moderating to the extent that a bot is auto removing posts, then we have a problem.

I've never understood why reddits are heavily moderated. We have the power to moderate ourselves. If we don't like it, downvote, if we like it, upvote.

Why not make a /r/trueandroid or similar if you want to have a text only/heavily moderated reddit about Android?
