Best argument I've ever seen for the Oxford Comma by paxanimusin writing

[–]mancko 0 points1 point ago

Won't matter. This seems like an obvious thing to me, but opponents are very loud...I love me some Oxford comma, but it's on its way out I fear... for no good reason...

Would have been cooler if it was like

DAVID W. SMITH

MATT ROBINSON

BILL MURRAY

CRYNMA JANG

AND

JOHN BARNHARDT

...

I bet Mr. Murray would have appreciated that more...

Bill Murray is becoming the Anti-Nicholson.

You can tell this is a feel good story because it took almost two whole comments (when I read this) before the partisan bickering (big business conservatives vs. easily offended liberals) started.

Bravo, human spirit!

Tennessee Man loses $22,000 to cops. No charges filed, no arrest made. "If somebody told me this happened to them, I absolutely would not believe this could happen in America." That was the reaction of a New Jersey man who found out just how risky it can be to carry cash through Tennessee. by Mind_Virusin politics

What about the car that he was going to use the money to buy? I'm sure the seller didn't wait 4 months. If I lost a thousand dollars today, but that's ok because I'll get it back in four months... OK, but where's this month's rent? What'll I eat in the meantime? When you don't have a lot to fall back on, losing something for half a year can be devastating and put you even deeper into problems...

This sounds like it was more or less disposable income, but he wasn't just driving around with it. What if it had been to pay for an expensive medical treatment and he died as a result? Or his wife died? What if it was the take from a charity event and he was taking it to an orphanage? What if what if what if...

Attention vegetarians by Se7en_Sinnerin funny

That's interesting. In a way I think it's comparable to being an atheist. Actually in a lot of ways... Actually it's so obviously comparable that I'm embarrassed I brought it up but I'm not going to delete this comment...

Someone should shop the sign into a sign for atheists....

Attention vegetarians by Se7en_Sinnerin funny

But the sign doesn't answer the question! I'd still feel like I needed to ask. And be annoyed to boot.

Attention vegetarians by Se7en_Sinnerin funny

[–]mancko 3 points4 points ago

This seems unnecessarily dickish to me: It's a) a legitimate concern, and b) it's condescending. If the management thinks vegetarians are hippie idiots then don't serve vegetarian stuff. But insulting your clientele is not usually a great move.

The only place this kind of thing is even kind of acceptable (IMHO) is at like a BBQ place that prides itself on meat and meat-eating culture. "You want vegetables, we sometimes put parsley on the side of the plate. Yeehaw!" or something similar. That's ok, it's part of the image they're trying to create. And vegetarians will probably avoid it anyway (sometimes to the sad resignation of their meat-eating friends... I know this from experience).

Also, one other thing: For a place of business, this seems like a really self-defeating sign. It's not true, obviously (or at least I assume it's not. All available evidence points to not). But then what is the truth? Is it "We'll cook our anything we want wherever we want" sarcasm or is it a gentle ribbing about their separate cooker they have to have? Or what? If I was vegetarian and saw that sign I'd be annoyed at the condescending tone (unless it was one of the above meat-centered places) and would feel like I'd have to ask what the deal actually was, which completely negates the effectiveness of the sign.

I don't know, the whole thing is just blowing my mind as I sit here.

Captain America by Warhawk444in atheism

[–]mancko 0 points1 point ago

Actually, you're right. I just looked it up and "peak of human perfection" is exactly right. It specifically says he's not super-strong.

So I guess he is like Batman, just through artificial means.

Sorry about that.

Captain America by Warhawk444in atheism

[–]mancko 0 points1 point ago

He's definitely enhanced. The super-soldier serum gave him at least some level of meta-human abilities... He's not Batman.

A very slight change to The Avengers' Captain America costume that I feel would make the character look slightly less goofy onscreen. Thoughts? by manckoin movies

[–]mancko[S] 0 points1 point ago

The director would have figured it out. In the end, it is a movie. The alien would have put a hand under his chin as well... If the mask was to be gone, it would have been gone.

I liked Cap a lot better when his mask was off...

He's sort of an underpowered Superman, is how I look at it. He has these outdated beliefs that he fights for in a world that has moved on... Superman fights for beliefs that he sees as good even though he has no connection.... The Boy-scout thing applies. We need Boy-Scouts.... real boy scouts who really believe in things. Too much of our world today is taken over with people who pretend to believe in "traditional values" and yet don't offer anything than lip service. Cap and Superman both see that the world changes, but it doesn't mean that basic humanity changes. So they both fight for the ideal. It's a more brave stance to take than the Punisher or, you know, Batman. They both have pain, but they believe that the ideals are better than pain.

I wish I believed that. And I'd rather have Cap or Supes fighting for me than someone who is taking out their anger on (admittedly better that they do) bad guys...

[–]mancko[S] 0 points1 point ago

Right. There's a reason why we never saw Wolverine anywhere near to this... It just doesn't work in real life... Something Bad-ass in comics would look stupid onscreen... you have to work against that. I thought the compromise they did in the Cap origin movie was pretty good. Made a little bit of sense...

I read it as the first girl being a sarcastic Christian... in a lot of ways that makes the whole thing more effective. Christians often blow out of proportion perfectly reasonable laws in order to feel more persecuted and get indignant.

There isn't really any need for the final paragraph, but it's ok. I get your point.

[–]mancko[S] 2 points3 points ago

From a practical standpoint, I think you're right. And in fact the look is almost exactly true to the comics (at least when I was reading everything I could get my hands on)...

Chris Evans is really good, but he doesn't quite have the square jawline for the mask... the rest of the costume looks great, but I was relieved when he lost the mask part (which also would be hard to explain with the chin strap)...

Of course, none of the Avengers has a secret identity anyway, so a mask is really unnecessary... Except maybe in the capacity of a helmet.

Anyway, I doubt my brainstormings amount for much :)

Just rewatched the Season 2 premiere. Question about the dead drivers... by epraiderin thewalkingdead

[–]mancko 0 points1 point ago

I'm with you, Samhein. Even a "show about zombies" needs to have internal consistency in order to maintain belief and a cohesive narrative. And besides, part of what makes a show like this good is that it makes your mind work and notice "pointless details." There is nothing in those scenes that take the viewer out of the narrative, but it's a good show, so you think about it afterward and stretch your mind around it. Some people just don't do that, which is fine too, but it's a bit small-minded to dismiss contemplation as somehow stupid. I dunno. Just backin' you up... I found this post because I was watching a rerun of the episode and had this thought. It's the little details that make it fun.
