[Science] Salt intake. by justtohidesubredditsin keto

[–]maldio 1 point2 points ago

I don't buy this, Owsley avoided salt for 50 years on keto. Eskimos never added salt to anything. I'm not anti salt, I just think its importance is greatly exaggerated. That article really doesn't have much science, just conjecture.

How does r/agnostic define "agnostic"? by 15rthughesin agnostic

[–]maldio 0 points1 point ago

Quite right, when he discusses it in the framework of his scale of atheism he describes himself as a 6, a de facto atheist. I think people sometimes confuse his refusal to call himself a 7 as meaning he is somewhat agnostic. But like he says, most thinking atheists can not claim to know that no god(s) exist.

TIL that US cannabis users have come into Canada as "political refugees" by jynxpupin canada

[–]maldio 0 points1 point ago

That may be so, but it doesn't change the fact that many states have much more lenient laws than we do. In many American states it's been effectively decriminalized and possession is a fixed fine of $100-500. In Canada that summary conviction for possession of Marijuana can still get you $1000 fine and 6 months in jail for a first offense.. Not to mention my earlier point about medical marijuana, in some US cities dispensaries are ubiquitous, in Canada, medical users are basically left to fend for themselves, even when they do manage to get prescription pot the quality is a complete joke compared to what one can buy in an American dispensary.

[–]maldio 0 points1 point ago

I don't see how they can, given how many states have for more progressive marijuana laws than anywhere in Canada. All on has to do is skim /r/trees to see some of the sweet bud that can be readily obtained at many dispensaries in the states. Not to mention the number of states who have reduced possession to a simple misdemeanor.

Agreed, not to mention dosing him with pepper spray AND dragging him out of a car and through hallways feet first and face down while being hogtied. If he had been an animal the outrage over this would be reddit-shaking.

Good link, thanks. I love that, he had multiple heart attacks after the cops used the tazers, but it was the cocaine that did it... sure thing, nothing to see here.

Militant atheist... really? by MarsupialBobin atheism

I try not to get butthurt when a theist calls me a "militant atheist" for speaking my opinion. Theists can't win on logic so the resort to name calling. It's no different than women who are called militant/radical feminists for the same reasons.

How I feel as a Canadian on r/atheism/ by Shakakahnin atheism

[–]maldio 0 points1 point ago

This is an early published Weir version:

O Canada! Our home and native land.
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!
And stand on guard, O Canada,
We stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, glorious and free,
We stand on guard, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee!

Weir's original lyrics from 1908 contained no religious references and used the phrase "thou dost in us command" before they were changed by Weir in 1914 to read "in all thy sons command".

Murderers should be given the tools to kill themselves in jail, Conservative senator says by marywwriterin canada

[–]maldio 1 point2 points ago

I was sitting there typing pretty much the same thing, then looked down and noticed yours. I think when people consider specific cases, like the senator using Olsen or people like Bernardo, probably a majority of Canadians would be quite comfortable with their lives being ended. But considering how badly Canadian law railroaded someone like Guy Paul Morin, it's nearly impossible to imagine capital punishment being applied in such a way that it could guarantee no innocents were killed.

"...I’m confident that not one in a million is aware that in Ontario alone, from 2002 until only 2007, 212 women have been killed by their partners. Women killed by partners are known as domestic homicides, and, unless especially gruesome, are barely worth a mention in the media" by thebalooshin canada

[–]maldio -2 points-1 points ago

Anger is part of the progression to homicidal rage. I doubt any of us, murderers excepted, have actually felt true homicidal rage, but we can understand it. I'm sure many of us have acted violently while outraged, it's not just about relationships. You never lashed out at anyone for anything? You never hit someone? Not even when you were a kid. I find that hard to believe. You say you've had your heart broken, are you saying you never felt anger? You say violence never crossed your mind, how about any other forms of retaliation? Anyway, I was talking about relating to people who commit crimes of passion, I don't believe Shafia was like that, it was one of my main points, that his case is different than the majority of domestic homicides. But sure, I can play Devil's advocate, I can relate to anyone, including Shafia, his actions and beliefs are repugnant, but he's still a product of his acculturation. His horrifying crime is an extreme extension of a fight mothers and fathers have with their children every day. What girl never had her mother or father forbid her from wearing something or set a curfew? Parents exercise those sorts of controls over their children all the time, if their children disobey them, the parents will become angry and frustrated and usually punish the child. Shafia was raised in a culture where a man has absolute authority over his family, and he moved to a culture where he lost that authority. His family recognized the change in culture too, his daughters rejoiced in the new freedoms our culture provides. His loss of control and belief that his daughters had betrayed his values made him angry towards them. He decided to show them all, and himself, that he was still the man he believed he was entitled to be. I never said I had sympathy for anyone, empathy is not sympathy, but I assume you know that and are just trying too hard to "win" our little discourse.

Anyone can be possessive but having those feelings towards women is especially common and encouraged

I don't know about "especially common and encouraged", it's been a while since women were chattel in the west, sure some of those sentiments linger, but most people raised here since the sixties have been taught otherwise from a young age. I suppose it depends who you are generalizing about; the further south you travel it can be like going back in time, a crime of passion is still a mitigating circumstance in many latino countries, in some places it's practically a justifiable homicide. Anyway, I agree with you to a degree, though, men are still mocked if they won't fight for a woman, girls will still often deride a boy if he lacks "masculine" aggression, etc. It's all rooted in notions that society is slow to rid itself of, not to mention regressive movements, like the anti-feminist backlash of some younger women who don't appreciate how different the feminist movement made things for them, not to mention the current generation of young men who've been raised to use "bitch" to describe the female gender. I understand where people like you and the author are coming from, if anything, the hype around this specific case is somewhat interesting. It's our society trying to show that we recognize how barbaric "honour killings" are, and trying reassure ourselves that we are better than that... and we are, but like I said, there are some family homicides here that aren't very different from the Shafia killing, so we haven't totally gotten past it ourselves, and perhaps we shouldn't be quite so smug.

Really, you have never even felt jealousy? You must be very well balanced, a superior human being even, good for you. I'm amazed, even as a child you were never excluded or left out, not even once? Maybe you were and it didn't make you angry at all, you were complacent and well adjusted, even in childhood. It's not about misogyny, if I were a gay man and caught my boyfriend cheating on me, I'm sure it would be just as upsetting. If a woman catches her husband cheating on her, she'll be angry too. It's rooted in possessiveness and selfishness to be sure, but not in a hatred or mistrust of women. That's why Caplan misses the mark, because she insists on framing it from a feminist perspective, when it's not a purely feminist issue. Feminism and misogyny do come into play, in the sense that the cultural and religious views that put women at a disadvantage are rooted in misogynistic beliefs. I'll even grant that there is a lot of commonality between "honour killings" and some spousal killings here, but it's silly to pretend that the Shafia case is just like your run of the mill "domestic homicide". If you google, mother kills... you're immediately presented with many similar cases, wives killing their husbands, children and themselves... it's simply not about misogyny.

Perhaps you don't understand what I meant by "relate to", it means I've felt anger when I've been "betrayed", and I can understand the roots of what people who lose it are feeling. Maybe you're a replicant or a Sheldon, maybe empathy to human emotion is beyond your ken. More likely you're just being obtuse and self aggrandizing. Sorry, I forgot to work a fuck in there somewhere.
