A new survey has revealed that young people are responding to tough legislation and increasing levels of online spying by investing in VPN services. It found that when compared to 2009, 40% more 15 to 25-year-olds are now hiding their activities online. by DrJulianBashirin technology

Tor is too slow for most usage. A security pro friend of my recommends getting a vpn in europe. A hacked router (wrt54g /w dd-wrt or similar) can be setup to pptp your traffic with little performance impact for $5 per month. Its not perfect but any rational government isn't going to bother with international efforts for a kid dling the latest nick cage movie.

edit: I just setup torrentprivacy's service. Its a pain on dd-wrt compared with just doing it in ubuntu.

For those who quit job to start a business and failed: how did you come back? by newyorktoein Entrepreneur

[–]maglos 1 point2 points ago*

A friend of mine had a notary business but he left it after taking on too much stress. He moved to a great place, learned another language, worked a grocery store for just above minimum wage and is happy for it.

Your family wont be so cool with that sorta fall black plan though. So.. ya play it safe. You would need support from your partner, work on cutting expense now.

I work as a programmer/system administrator. I have a couple web projects I have been picking away at but its just way too slow part time. My work really starts to suffer if I delve to much in my projects. I was fairly burnt out after completing uni doing unsuccessful side projects, I won't be letting that happen again. But if your going to be contracting out for most of the work anyway, it might work.

btw I had a significant financial failure with about 12 months invested I abandoned the project to look for work. I was not especially employable at the time so it took about 8 months and I had to move back home. But I'm back and looking to go full time(-40hrs or so for contract work) on another project after 2 years of 9-5.

why is this trending? first of all, 'Canada' lets call it as harper likes 'Harper Government'. Secondly, I doubt we import many minimum wage workers and anything above that, well that's free market.

YES. I am a good tenant but I assure you, the margins on my rent are slim. People seem to think real estate is free money, its not, its a pain in the ass. Do what your good at and like doing.

If there was such a thing as a sure fire investment, people with a lot more money then you would be buying it up until it was an average investment.

I look at craigslist. I've either rented in a home, or the owner hires somebody to manage it directly or its part of a larger organization(student housing). A couple young guys owned the 7 unit building I'm in now, they sold it to a owner that has other local businesses. They lost a number of renters and property because they where neglectful and incompetent. Maybe they would have hung onto it if they could have had it managed for a reasonable price.

I see there being more renters in the nearish future but I don't see a lot of money there. I generally feel like I get a good deal with my rentals and for the $700 I pay it wouldn't be worth my time to own. Lets say the property is worth 100k that I could be earning $330 per month on elsewhere.

+$700 rent -330 opportunity cost -50 utilities

so you have $320 to cover maintenance, dealing with tenant turnover(I move about yearly) and your also risking an unstable housing market. Its not good enough margin to be worth my time.

BTW Condos are selling like hot cakes and Boardwalk does well in the higher end apartment rental market. But then I could just invest in that.

OP would be better off hiring contractors and building relationships that he can leverage for progressively larger projects.

oh probably it could work but Canada is not an ideal place for this:

1) our housing market is cooling, interest rates are at an all time low, housing prises high. max length of mortgages has been shortened. Canada's population is near stagnant (excluding emigrants) and Canadians already have some of the highest home ownership rates in the world. We also have very few issues with land availability.

2) Canadian Cities are hugely sprawling. you'd be lucky to find 10 properties that you could manage and didn't involve a couple hours of driving in our larger cities.

3) Canadian homes and apartments are often poorly built. I don't get this part but it happens all the time. Its the American dream to own your own McMansion, I guess and tons of Canadians do it.

4) Labour is expensive, a plumber, carpenter, mason are a HIGH paying professions here. Double my wage as a system administrator. Even Janitorial work wont come cheap.

So america will have an army of youth who can't get a loan to buy a house. This sounds like a prime opportunity to rent out property.

I'm not sure how common rental agencies are in Canada, as a renter I haven't seen it. I have seen many large apartment buildings owned by large companies with reits though. Boardwalk comes to mind: http://www.google.com/finance?cid=674833

REITS seem like a simpler, lower risk way to invest in real-estate.

I'm with you on the real estate. Even if it were a money maker, OP wants to stay mobile; tying yourself to a property would not be wise.

Not sure about app dev, it could go either way. But I'm not partaking in the Apple cool-aid (but am an meddling developer/sysadmin). I think webapps and html 5 has a more solid future.

I wouldn't go back to school. The perfect idea isn't going to hit you in the back of the head. Talk to people who aren't like you, see what problems they deal with. I live in Calgary; the ceo from indochino.com talked about his experiences at our new startup incubator. He was said he was happy about his decision to stay in Vancouver, cheaper and better loyalty among employees over San Fran. If you can, it might be wise to join a startup and learn from their mistakes before you take on your own risks, and the states would be great for that.

by my math that's 86300kg of copper per year or about $.5mil worth. Its probably not much compared to a decent sized power line project. For perspective, running a 5cm diameter copper line 1000km(between Vancouver and Calgary) would cost about $3 billion for the copper.

I thought about that strstr(), its not 'non-buggy' but was fun to think about. Its chunks up the document and throws it in a hashtable then the query gets a similar treatment for matching. It should be much faster for static documents with many queries. Its been a while since I thought about search engines, but it must be something like this:

def strstr(haystack, needle):

haystk = {}

haystkextra = haystack[ -len(haystack)//6 ]

for i in range(0, len(haystack), 6):

    seg = haystack[i:i+5]

    if haystk.has_key( seg ):

        haystk[seg].append(i)

    else:

        haystk[seg] = [i]

needleextra = needle[ -len(needle)//6 ]
results = []
map(lambda u: results.append((0, u)), haystk[needle[0:5]])
for j in range(6, len(needle), 6):
    seg = needle[j:j+5]
    if not haystk.has_key(seg):
        return "not found"
    else:
        map(lambda v: results.append((j, v)), haystk[seg])

insert recursive answer getter here.

Would that be impressive or just do a proper O(n) implementation. This would be a terrible replacement for strstr() but more fun.

I suspect your part of the "this code is slow, where's that team that makes things faster" team. I probably should have included some other languages with python, like PHP at facebook, or ruby(twitter?) and ya, Go looks amazing. I bet Bing is C++ through and through.

Thanks for the advice. My old room mate turned down a job at Google(for Facebook), so I have an idea of the calibre of people there. But he is smarter then me in most ways.

That article looks interesting. During my phone interview, I felt like I should have had a more definitive answer for what part of google I would like to work in but really I'm just interested in being put with teh smrt ppl.

YouTube is massive now, its Python's glory days there are behind it but I'm sure it will have a strong supporting role, if only because its more then half the code base.

I've got a technical interview in a couple weeks with google, any tips?

C++ was just such a mess the last time I worked with it that I find that hard to believe. Is it cross platform in any sorta reliable way? what about library management? Do I still need to learn make or use some microsoft IDE?

But really, none of the project I have in mind need performance, they all just need to be built faster. Or if they do need performance, I'd look into CUDA before C++.

What a bizzar bit of Microsoft drivel. Do what Youtube does, code in python and create c libs for cpu/memory intensive areas. Best of both worlds without dealing with all the complexities of C++.

EDIT Oh man, well who am I to challenge your world view, but if you wish to jump down the rabbit hole, I suggest watching YouTube employee #1 talking about scalability and python at the 2012 pycon (he starts 10 mins in) http://pyvideo.org/video/632/scalability-at-youtube . Its not all glowing for python but its useful and not this developers developers developers nonsense from OP.

The kid was no pro either, you should loosen and tighten the nuts while the tire is touching the ground so its not moving around on you.

If you struggle that hard to change a tire you probably shouldn't drive. Safer for everyone. But I'd still probably help a bit, basic assistance is common where I live.

I'll do a 24 hour fast every couple months. If I were severely over weight I think I would fast every other day. Even if my intake was the same as just reducing normally. I think it improves ones ability to withstand hunger, which is the bigger issue if you weigh over 250lbs.

no, I hadn't heard that. My impression is that they have a manufacturing/big buisness approch to software development. Everyone has a role and they are all easily replaced. Tight dedlines on products with well mapped out goal lines. This is common in oil & gas and I don't like it. Its a much different approch from facebook and google but not so dissimilar to EA. EA strikes a fine balance that doesn't always work for them. EA would never have built minecraft.
