Student deals on tv in Waterloo by ismelldeathin uwaterloo

As everyone else has said before me, just stream. Television and home-phone would be the first two things I'd cut if I lived on my own.

Your thoughts about Quebec's student protest by billliin uwaterloo

[–]maattp -5 points-4 points ago

I've managed to do it just fine. I've worked at least 15 hours a week since grade 9 and have still managed to maintain a 90%+ average AND participate in extra-curricular activities. It's not impossible. Sure, it takes up some time, but I would argue that most students have an extra 15 hours a week of leisure time that they could give up to pay for their education. "Not borrowing money" is extremely practical.

This is true, but you probably did attend grade school and high school. So at least you're paying for something that you benefited from in the past. Plus, a basic education is pretty much essential to getting any sort of job. A post-secondary education is not (although some may argue that it is nowadays).

What bicycle to get for commuting and just for riding trails at uwaterloo? by WhippedMalein uwaterloo

[–]maattp 0 points1 point ago

Don't get full suspension if you plan on commuting with it. It just makes it more difficult to bike while standing up and such. I made the mistake of getting a bike with full suspension

What about the people who choose not to go to post-secondary? That forces them to pay for something that they will never use which isn't right either.

Solution: don't borrow money. Work throughout high school and save the money made, then choose a good program with CO-OP and graduate debt-free. People need to stop looking for handouts and work for what they want.

My macbook's battery is dangerously full by fattygin apple

I've bought many replacement batteries before on eBay. They've always been fine

eBay sells replacement batteries for around $50. They aren't complicated to remove, you just have to unscrew the case and pop it out. Anyone with half a brain can do it

My experience with the Apple Store tonight. by pdmcmahonin apple

[–]maattp 0 points1 point ago

I'm fairly confident that they never reuse the exterior. They definitely don't for iPod's, because the backs are always absolutely mint on the refurbs. You can tell when an iPod has been used because the chrome scratches within minutes.

Same with Canada, we have iPhone's everywhere.

I was under the impression that the case and screen, all of the exterior in fact, was brand new. They always come pristine, you would be able to tell if the case had been used before.

Cell phone plan recommendations in Waterloo? by ccc_c0mb0breakerin uwaterloo

[–]maattp 2 points3 points ago

I'd probably go month-to-month with Koodo. They run off the Telus network so their coverage is great and their rates are fairly reasonable. They also don't charge for long distance which is a plus. I don't know what their policy is for holding a number for 4 months is though, you'd have to ask them about that.

Good ISP in Waterloo? by Otaku-samain uwaterloo

[–]maattp 0 points1 point ago

Oh and I've never had an issue with reliability. I have a constant connection, it has dropped maybe twice in the six years I've been using them.

Good ISP in Waterloo? by Otaku-samain uwaterloo

[–]maattp 0 points1 point ago

Honestly their service is excellent. When you call them, you speak to a REAL person located in the GTA. They have a great forum with lots of users willing to offer help, and they respond to emails quickly. IMO they offer much better customer service than Bell or Rogers.

Good ISP in Waterloo? by Otaku-samain uwaterloo

[–]maattp 7 points8 points ago

A little expensive? It's one of the cheapest ISP's out there, and one of the only to offer truly unlimited internet. Of course it might seem expensive compared to crappy "lite" plans, but as you said those plans are useless.

Average Undergrad Tuition in Ontario is 260% of the tuition in Quebec. I knew it was cheaper there But never thought it's less than half. Discuss by Lemarain uwaterloo

[–]maattp 11 points12 points ago

When you come right down to it, our tuition really isn't that bad compared to the US. I think that most people can come out of University debt-free if they are smart with their money, save before university and have CO-OP jobs.

Do UW Students get Free MS Software through MSDN? by maattpin uwaterloo

[–]maattp[S] 1 point2 points ago

It still is missing little things like the ability to properly sync an iOS device. Stuff like that are what would prevent me from ever using Linux as my main OS.

Cheap Internet? by TheCanPandain uwaterloo

Oh, that sucks. Honestly I've had nothing but good experiences from them. Plus, I'm pretty sure that Bell handles the DSL installations so they may have been at fault there.
