That's amazing! Very nicely done.

Yeah. Actually, did you know Helen Keller was named after the joke? You can put that on Wikipedia.

Chicago GIS data, provided by the city. (repost from /r/maps) Suitable for OSM imports? the building footprints look like a good idea. by louin openstreetmap

[–]lou[S] 0 points1 point ago

I honestly have no idea how to do a proper import and can probably guarantee some kind of noobish screwup. Not to mention that I don't live in Chicago and have only visited once, so I don't even have local expertise to fall back on. But I thought I'd mention this data source since I just saw it posted elsewhere and let other people decide what to do with it. That said, let me know if there's anything I can do to help; it could be a good learning experience for me.

Saw this on a friend's Facebook. I don't know any of them - but it just proves to me that even amongst non-transit nerds, the era of auto-oriented LA is dying by louin transit

[–]lou[S] 1 point2 points ago

What this destroys is the argument that "No one will ride transit. Southern California is car-centric because that's what people want."

Once you get enough people who want transit to silence the people who don't want it, then you can start getting people on board with finding solutions to transit feasibility problems. I'm not saying that's going to be easy. But I think this is a very good start.

Gabe Ortiz told me you all would write my annual self-evaluation for my job for me. by haleymin gabeortiz

[–]lou 2 points3 points ago

Matt Haley's job performance has been lacking this past year, however, we expect that productivity should increase if some of his duties could be delegated to an attractive female assistant effective immediately.

Sounds legit.

Although I should point out there's six rooms, you could rent out four for a more affordable $50,000 a month.

VX Superconduction malfunction by ssynesthesiain VXJunkies

[–]lou 1 point2 points ago*

Damn, man, wish I saw this earlier, because I know a little something about this. First and foremost I gotta say a .0000000000000002 temperature difference is nothing. My buddy Rick did some experiments on this a couple years ago and I think - not sure but look up the studies published by Harman and Chung in '09 - we're talking about a minimal effect on the total dynamo coil discharge. I know it's still outside the usual specified tolerance limits but it's a really conservative cap and nothing to worry about practically. The reality is that Herx lost a lot of their business more because of bad press than anything else, and nowadays, the odds of actually encountering any physical destablization is essentially zero since all external plugin interfaces have a built-in failsafe against cascading power eruption (assuming what you have is manufactured after 1995 - if not, then you have worse problems on your hand).

tl:dr; don't sweat it.

If global warming is a serious problem, why are we adding an hour of sun to our day? by Thereianin shittyaskscience

[–]lou 8 points9 points ago

Global warming is a serious problem, but the sun is also gradually lowering in temperature. Somehow it all counterbalances out. We just add an hour of sun so we can stay out later.

I'm making a greenhouse. What is the best way to get some greenhouse gas in there? by MannerSharkin shittyaskscience

By definition, any gas inside of a greenhouse is "greenhouse gas." This includes what we commonly know as "air," which is a type of gas.

Did Albert Einstein's parents name him Einstein because they somehow knew he was really smart? How did they know? by nhexumin shittyaskscience

When your son is smart enough to figure out the theory of relativity, you will know because he will have traveled back in time to tell you.

Everything I know about the Byzantines I learned from Assassin's Creed: Revelations. What it didn't tell me is how the word "byzantine" came to mean "a needlessly complicated process."

If you're distributing documents from JSTOR I would be interested in reading more. And where are you? It's too early in the morning here in Western America to be drunk.
