Came to say this, was beaten to it. As a gay guy in Rochester, NY I would be in absolute disbelief if this happened here with how friendly the community is.

My god though, this crap needs to stop. Unbelievable that people still justify homophobia when people are committing suicide over it.

Our LGBTQ groups are better than some that I've read about here, but I got away from them when someone suggested I run for a position running the gay alliance, and when I declined (politely, I will add), everyone was...unbelievably offended.
Frankly I don't find it surprising that funding for the groups here keeps getting passed around between organizations because nobody wants to deal with it, since pretty much everyone with some sanity avoids them in general. It's ridiculous that I, as a guy who isn't straight, can't go to the community and talk about things without people getting offended. God forbid I'm somewhere between their binary norms. My sexuality doesn't and will not ever define me, so I don't do pride groups in general as it is, but now I have reasons to avoid them.

I'm afraid of being called out on being wrong. It's the stupidest thing, but as a kid no matter what I did - even if I was right, my family would vocally call me out on being wrong somehow. I specifically remember one time them telling me i should join scouts and why I was wrong to say no, then when I said yes, them calling me out on being wrong as well. It is the biggest hindrance I have. I should find a therapist.

To be honest? Everything. My parents avoided yelling and so I never actually got in trouble for anything. But also never got out of the house because they didn't argue with me and I was a shy kid.

Somehow I grew up to be a decent person who follows rules.

I'm a student and so I have essentially 0 disposable income at the moment. I do not currently have a job (did in the past, never made enough to be taxable to my knowledge). My main source of income is financial gifts from generous grandparents over the year.

Last year it exceeded the amount that's not taxable by a couple hundred (from one person), and I have no idea what to do about that as far as taxes go, since I can't afford to uh, have the government come after me. Should I be particularly concerned about this and maybe run and find an H&R block to talk to or something?

Things come and go, don't stress over them, there's always something more important or better to take it's place and if there isn't, you probably should be fighting for it.
Be yourself and find people supportive of you being you, no matter how weird you may be. It's really stressful and really not worth being someone you just aren't. (Uncloseted gay guy here)
Go outside and meet someone new regularly. Especially if you have roommates, they don't like watching you sit in front of your netflix 24/7/365, it's depressing (aka do not be like my roommate).
Do it, even if it scares you (within sane limits). Most things you fear are just things you haven't done before.
Keep your emotions in check and don't stress or take offense at things, it's really not worth it. Plus, people really hate listening to you bitch about those things if they're small.

...I feel like I am a very learned 18 year old, after scrolling down and finding the same advice given by people far older than me.

This is true. I was/am trying to choose between 2 programs and I only had about 1 quarter to decide before I actually had to start taking specific classes for either. I was still glad to be done with liberal arts when I got here though.

I agree with this. Take as much of your liberal arts core as you can outside of RIT then come here for what RIT is known for- engineering/technology. Saves you a lot of money, and it's a really good feeling to be second year status after just a quarter or two.
