As a diablo fan with no money, no gaming pc and bad internet, this is me. by diablolin gaming

[–]logicom -1 points0 points ago

How many people have now purchased Diablo 3? 6-7 million? I think it's fair to say that they've all played an average of at least 5 hours each, which translates to 30-35 million hours worth of testing. It would take a team of 100 testers over 30 years to put that kind of time into a game. Yeah, I think we both know that isn't possible.

Most PC gamers will put 8gb of ram for their main memory and their video cards will have at least 1gb of memory so you're not wrong but to say that ALL gamers have more than 8gb of ram and that to suggest otherwise would mean I was on drugs is absurd. You can game with much less, you might not be able to max out your settings at 60+ fps at 1080p but you can play them.

What I understand from just your posts (will watch the video later) is that every other metric people are bringing up can be dismissed because we'll just get used to them except for the things you say need to be improved beyond some arbitrary point set by you. If you can't see the special pleading and goal post shifting that you're doing I don't think that this will be a productive conversation.

My mistake, I was thinking for some reason of my old computer that had a motherboard limited to only 2gb, plus I was talking about how games rarely go above a gig or two and the 2 gig figure stuck in my brain.

Okay, now you're just not making sense. You say that life isn't better because we're not happy because life is better but we're used to it being better so we're less happy about so that means that life is not in fact better. So in order to truly make life better we have to make life better but not get used to it because that would not make life better.

That's one roller coaster of logic you got right there.

If I had pirated the game, I'd be enjoying it by now. by WeLoveKanjimariin gaming

[–]logicom 1 point2 points ago

I'm being generous for the sake of argument. It's merely an example meant to make the point that while the system they have does help prevent piracy it also prevents cheating.

If all Blizzard wanted was to prevent piracy they could have done what Ubisoft did and just make it authenticate online rather than having half the game run on their servers.

Yeah that would be about all that extra ram would be useful for. No one is going to sit around and wait a few minutes while the console (or PC) loads a dozen gigabytes into RAM. PC games, even with the 2 gb limitation still look absolutely fantastic compared to console games, and they do it with far less than 20gb of ram.

I'm not saying that there's no way that the PS4 will have 20gb of ram, I'm just saying that I don't think it's a reasonable expectation and that in context with everything else on the list I think it's much more likely that it's a fake.

In what way has it gotten better?

Lots of ways. Many more people are well nourished (despite the obesity rates people are still far healthier now than ever in history), most of the developed world has free publicly funded heathcare, we have pretty much the entire sum of human knowledge available on the internet. Sure there are lots of poor people, but there are also many middle class people doing very well for themselves. Of course it isn't perfect, not at all, but compared to our past we're doing much better. The fact that we're able to have this conversation over the internet is evidence that in many ways society has improved.

Yeah income equality still exists and has grown over the last few decades but it's still a far fry from the slavery and serfdom of the past. You're either blind or too cynical if you think that things haven't generally gotten better.

[–]logicom 4 points5 points ago

All the points you've brought up have existed throughout history. It sucks. I agree completely with you, but for the most part it's trending towards being better. Mismanaging resources and poverty are not 20th or 21st century inventions. They've always existed and for the most part it's gotten better over the last century.

I think the point he was trying to make is that 20GB is excessive for the near future for a game console. Game consoles don't need as much memory as PCs. Gamers who build gaming PCs rarely put more than 8gb of system ram in their systems because games rarely go above a gig or two and a lot of that gets dumped in the graphics card's memory and I can't think of any off the top of my head that have more that 2gb of ram.

The people who pour money into SLI setups or $500 dollar graphics cards with tons of muscle and memory are usually running their games on multiple monitors at massive resolutions. That's not going to be necessary for the PS4 that will run mainly on 1080p televisions.

Of course I could be totally wrong. I'm just saying that to me it looks far more like a wishlist than a realistic spec sheet for a gaming console.

Only in the sense that every online game requires a constant online connection. You could say that WoW's always online requirement is functionally no different Ubisoft's DRM if you're willing to go that far.

Diablo 3 is made more like an MMO than a true single player game. People will eventually learn how to pirate the game, but that's not the persistent online connection's main purpose. The main purpose for all the map generation, item generation, and enemy generation happening on Blizzard's servers is to prevent cheating in the gold auction house and real money auction house. Your game client doesn't have any of the software Blizzard uses to generate items so hackers can't use it to find exploits to either generate items or duplicate items in the online game like they did in D2. The software that would allow you to play offline is the same software cheaters would use to learn how to exploit Blizzard's servers. You can't (or at least Blizzard hasn't found a way) have a system that permits offline single player and a secure online multiplayer.

Diablo 3 Becomes Fastest Selling PC Game Of All Time by futurefix5in gaming

[–]logicom 0 points1 point ago

No. It's okay when the online component serves a purpose other than as DRM. D3 is as close to being an MMO as you can get without actually being an MMO. Steam comes with the ability to go into offline mode/download your games on as many machines and as many times as you want/crazy sales/friends list etc. To go back to Assasin's Creed it featured always online DRM with no other benefits.

The company does matter too somewhat. Blizzard may be pretty bad at launches but every other time their connections are normally rock solid. I played WoW for a few years and I only ever had connection issues around a few major content patches. I have a certain amount of faith that Blizzard will continue to provide good quality service because they have a good history of doing that, with the exception of launches of course, which is why I waited 2 days before buying Diablo 3 :)

But hey, ignore what I said and believe what you want. You can call me a hypocrite for evaluating each case differently if you want and you can be as much a fundamentalist about online requirements as you want.

Diablo 3 Becomes Fastest Selling PC Game Of All Time by futurefix5in gaming

[–]logicom -1 points0 points ago

My opinion on always online DRM is that I'll tolerate it when it serves a purpose and improves my experience more than it detracts from my experience. I'm willing to accept not being able to play every once in a while for the benefits of not having the auction house spoiled by cheaters, playing my characters from any PC with Diablo installed and being able to easily join my friends without worrying about online vs. offline characters. Steam is also DRM but it comes with services we generally like more than we hate the DRM, for me the same applies with Diablo 3.

I'm not trying to prove you wrong or say that you're wrong. I'm giving you my opinion on why I and others were outraged by something like Assasin's Creed's always online DRM but okay with Diablo 3's always online DRM.

Scumbag Diablo 3 players by JiveMonkeyin gaming

[–]logicom 0 points1 point ago

There's no real fix for that though, it's not a bug it's just the players acting dumb (no offense). If everyone just sits there with their own public game and no one actually joins any of the already created public games you'll never play with anyone.

It's probably a case of too many people creating public games with too few joining public games.

People of Reddit who feel like you belong to an attacked minority: Do you feel like SRS defends you in any meaningful way? by I-am-fifty-ft-tallin AskReddit

[–]logicom 6 points7 points ago

The trick is thinking outside "But what do I like? What are my limits?" and having a little respect for those who are different to you. You have not lived out everyone's experience with race, sexism, rape etc Everyone is different. I'm sure you've heard of triggering? Where jokes, pictures, comments can actually cause traumatic flashbacks for victims of certain crimes? You don't care, good for you. What exactly do you want?

This is the money shot right here. Sure, you're allowed to say things that could hurt others, by why would you want to? I don't see anything wrong with making those sorts of offensive jokes around family or friends where you know that no one is taking it seriously but on the internet you're reaching more than just the people who know it's a joke. I'm not okay with censorship of course but for Christ's sake stop using your freedom of speech to bully people.

You think you're making a clever joke about how a little girl with Down's can count to potato, or how a woman should get back in the kitchen but those actually hurt people's feelings. Why would I want to make a joke at someone else's expense unless that person is a raging asshole?

People of Reddit who feel like you belong to an attacked minority: Do you feel like SRS defends you in any meaningful way? by I-am-fifty-ft-tallin AskReddit

[–]logicom -3 points-2 points ago

Yeah you won't find any constructive arguments unless you go to /r/SRSdiscussion. It's that way by design. That said, SRS is a silly place. I don't mind that there is a place for people to post other people's stupid, racist, sexist humor and make fun of them. If you can make an offensive joke at someone else's expense you have to be able to take an offensive joke directed at you. The problem is that often times they just ignore obvious jokes. It's kinda weird how pedophilia has become a sick sort of "in-joke" on the internet but making a shitty child rape joke does not make someone a pedophile for Christ's sake.

Think it through son... by Ninjaspeaksin funny

[–]logicom 0 points1 point ago

I would guess it depends on the species as well as the circumstances. Russia is having issues with very large packs of wolves that are basically zerging farms.

Think it through son... by Ninjaspeaksin funny

[–]logicom 4 points5 points ago

Meh, the wolf is doing it wrong. Sure, your ability to figure things out on your own is important but oftentimes it's a far more efficient use if your time to ask for help. The only reason we as a species keep advancing is because we are taught the things that the previous generations have learned and that allows us to build on their knowledge.

A long-time Blizzard fan's take on D3 launch day woes by Dashuktain gaming

[–]logicom 3 points4 points ago

TIL: Being unable to play a videogame for a day or two due to connection difficulties/outages after launch is equivalent to be drugged and raped.

You know, I can understand being frustrated and venting online about it, I've been there, but you guys have taken it beyond any sort of reasonable human emotion. This subreddit really is the perfect echo chamber for growing outrage.

So I get downvoted because you don't like how battle.net works?

No, you get downvoted because you're absolutely completely wrong. You can login from any computer with D3 installed. The game key is associated with your battle.net account not that particular installation of the game. One of the main benefits of the always online battle.net system is that you can play on any computer with a copy of D3 installed and continue where you left off at home. All you need is your username and password (and an authenticator if you use one).

holy hell... blizzard customer service (is incredible) by bingbongusin gaming

[–]logicom 1 point2 points ago

a soulless husk of the former games designed to cash in on nostalgia rather than be a truly great and worthwhile sequel. Everything about it feels pretty lazy. I've gotten more depth and fun out of free to play games and discount $20 titles.

Wow, it's amazing how you and I walked away with completely different feelings on the game. I personally loved it. The end game was lacking (like any new MMO) and it certainly wasn't flawless but I thought the character questline was fantastic. Much more well done than most MMOs. Different strokes for different folks I guess.
