I'm very good with your mom.

My guesses:

1) Your eyes stay focused on one area rather than moving across a page, which is a lot easier.

2) The high speed forces you to pay attention, just like a fast scene in a movie gets your attention.

I think that's about it. It's great though.

TIL a lot of people don't understand that speed-reading actually BOOSTS comprehension. Try this method and see what happens. by lifeislamein todayilearned

Posted this link in the "compare your reading speed to the national average" post and people seemed to like it, so here it is for everyone else to see.

National average speed is apparently 250 words per minute. Set the thing to display 400 per minute and you'll probably still manage to pull it off.

Even better: set it to display 3 words at once, at 500 words per minute. It feels downright easy.

Maybe try the Evelyn Wood books? I haven't tried them, but I used the finger-tracing method she describes, and it works. It's easier on large books that can lay flat, or ebook readers, rather than paperbacks that fold closed easily. I wish I had more actionable suggestions, but those are the methods I'm aware of.

I accidentally learned how to speed-read (AFTER graduating as an English major...fuck you, universe!), and actually your comprehension goes way up when you do it. You're not skimming. You're doubling how much attention you're paying to the material, and it comes at you twice as fast.

Imagine listening to a guy talking really fast. If your brain is active, you take it in. If you're half asleep, you don't. Speed reading is more about being alert than being quick.

Not saying it's superior, but it's not what a lot of people think it is.

I know you're not trying to be annoying, so it's ok. However:

1) As for simplifying cleaning, what I meant with the catch points simplifying the cleaning process is that it would be easier than if there were no catch points, rather than saying the cleaning process would be easier than with the existing model. Dumping out the portafilter is not that advantageous compared to popping out the hockey puck, but my intention was to make the design easy to clean (not necessarily easiER), and the catch points facilitate that, unless you overfill it, in which case it's the same level of complexity as the existing model (i.e., rinse the basket, pop out the puck and rinse the piston).

2) It gets dirty when you stir it, and then you rinse it off. Don't you rinse off the stir stick immediately after using it, then set it down on a drying rack? This is no different. And if the handle is long enough, your hand won't touch the dirty part anyway.

3) You don't plunge with the handle in place. You remove it, and plunge normally, then reattach and twist off the basket, and rinse it.

The advantages would be that you deal with 1 tool instead of 4. I wish I just had a prototype and a demo video. The points you're bringing up are the type that won't make it any more effective; the factors that make it more effective are that you deal with one tool, rather than picking up and dealing with several. Plus you don't have to replace the filters, since it's built-in (the Aeropress reusable filter is fine, but it's a separate piece from the basket, making it more complicated than it needs to be).

I wish I could make a video...maybe I'll just superglue some alligator clips to the handle and demonstrate it in theory. If you were to time it against the existing method, it would win every time. No filter replacement, no setting tools down and grabbing the other one, no dumping grinds into the piston, since they're already in the basket as soon as you scoop, and you only need to clean the basket instead of the filter plus basket (or, no wasted paper filters). There are quite a few quickened steps in there, and if it were just sold that way to begin with, it wouldn't cost any more.

Ok, so let's say we have double the expenses, and are forced to sell the product for $14. That's right on target.

Seriously, I can't see the problem. Take the filter basket of the Aeropress, then put the stir stick right next to it. Think about how much that costs. Now imagine there is a clip that attaches one to the other, no more complicated than a clothespin. How have we gotten to a product costing more than a few dollars to manufacture?

Um, this makes it simpler. You combine 4 components into 1, which has an intuitive detachment mechanism right where your finger would be anyway. You don't have to deal with extra, removable filters, and you don't have to pick up and set down different tools, instead using just 1.

I like the Aeropress, but it's just not as simple as it could be, which is why I want one of these. Apparently I didn't convey it properly, because all it would do is simplify the process.

1) Yes, you can make the basket fit the Aeropress base, then have a second thinner part, but I still don't see the point. Pressing the Aeropress base all the way against the basket doesn't seem to do anything. This isn't the factor that creates any important seal. As long as the only open parts are the perforations of the metal filter, I don't see it making a difference.

2) Here's a device that sells for $6.99 that includes all components I have described, albeit in a different shape, made entirely of metal. http://www.amazon.com/Danesco-Coffee-Measure-Clip-Handle/dp/B001CDEIRA

I am having so much trouble wrapping my head around the concept of this costing too much. A can opener can be found for $10. What's so much more complicated about this thing?
