The Science of pleasure will soon unlock limitless bliss. by appliedphilosophyin transhumanism

This is my personal dream. I would be a much better person if I could be "dopamigergic", and I am convinced that not experiencing the suffering of depression and anxiety would make me more motivated and a better person all around.

Despite the enormous changes which have taken place since electronic computing was invented in the 1950s, some things remain stubbornly the same. In particular, most people can't learn to program: between 30% and 60% of every university computer science department's intake fail the first programming course. Experienced teachers are weary but never oblivious of this fact; brighteyed beginners who believe that the old ones must have been doing it wrong learn the truth from bitter experience; and so it has been for almost two generations, ever since the subject began in the 1960s.

Wireheading doesn't mean you lose the ability to live life normally. I feel like my ability self-actualize would be improved by not having to deal with suffering.

Boredom is an un-pleasurable experience. What if wireheading prevents boredom? What if everything was generally the same, you just never felt bored, unhappy, in pain, etc?

Its pretty well established that, in the case of computer programming, there are people who take a programming course and do poorly, and those that take the course do well. Its an innate skill thing.

Why radio buttons are called radio buttons by _tweaksin web_design

What I don't like about it is that it has to be specifically blue, with a rounded rectangle, in order to be "save" instead of just "down". That means that it conflicts with dark themes, themes that require or forbid rounded rectangles, or themes that try to create a certain consistency for icons.

It ties designers hands.

I honestly think that Bush was a damn terrible president, possibly the worst in history, so there is a lot to criticize. Personally, I'm worried that because of how partisan our country is, we can't see how flawed the presidency was and we therefore can't correct the core errors. I don't thank that Bush's shortcomings are necessarily the Republican Party's shortcomings, so why don't the Republicans do some "Debushification"?

Anyway, I don't understand why you are being downvoted, when I'm the infiltrator in this subreddit.

Not that you can really tell from a picture, but all those women look pretty socially well adjusted to me.

Where do you find these girls? Socially awkward is kinda my type.

Sorry, still don't buy it. It looks like the upward trend 2010 on is just as steep as the upward from 2002 to 2008. Did you really think that Obama was going to turn around a terrible recession in just 3 years, when your guy couldn't do as well last recession? Oh btw your guy is probably at fault for both recessions.

I'm sorry, but the numbers just don't prove your point.

So what is your definition of Libertarian Socialism then?

Americans now consume an average of 4 bottles of water a week, the highest ever, despite years of environmental opposition by holdenkawfieldin environment

[–]level1 0 points1 point ago

You have a pretty insane definition of stealing buddy.

Stealing means taking something that isn't yours. These companies are buying the water at full price, just like everyone else. What they then do with the water is called arbitrage.

If the companies are stealing, who exactly is being stolen from?

Freedom of Speech by jbenunivin DebateaCommunist

[–]level1 1 point2 points ago

Wow.... somebody really needs to create a set of definitions for these terms, because I'm pretty sure that I am not an anarcho-communist, whatever that is.

I want to hear it from y'all. What's the difference between Liberal Socialism and Democratic Socialism? by WhiskeyCupin socialism

[–]level1 3 points4 points ago

I identify as LibSoc and I am not an anarchist. Actually, I find it rather annoying that anarchists call themselves libertarians or that libertarians call themselves anarchist. THERE IS A DIFFERENCE!

We should be able to make a distinction between "wants a state but also wants strong personal liberties like drug rights" vs "does not want a state". My understanding is that anarchist means "does not want a state" while libertarian means "wants a state, but a limited one".

Can we please stop muddling words like this?

YSK that free live TV is coming to your smartphone and tablet by God_Wills_Itin YouShouldKnow

[–]level1 2 points3 points ago

Stations are still deciding whether to offer the service, so the list may change by the time Dyle TV launches, Cadley said. The timing is not final yet, "but I can tell you it's still later this year."

Other stations scheduled to participate are in Austin, Houston, Tulsa , Chicago, Boston, New York, San Francisco, Miami and Seattle.

What part of this requires the stations' participation? If its just an Over-The-Air antenna embedded inside the phone, then it should be exactly like standard television, and you should see the exact same list of local stations.

Something is fishy here.

I identify as libertarian socialist, and to me the democratic and civil rights, as well as concepts like government transparency and the rule of law, or far more important than economic issues. This is why I don't sympathize with communists. When was the last time you heard a communist talk about freedoms and rights, beyond just a pithy "oh yeah we'll do that too"?

Poll: 74 Percent of Americans, Including 67 Percent of Republicans, Want Obama to End Medical Marijuana Crackdown by hookskatin Libertarian

[–]level1 1 point2 points ago

Why do you care so much if people use "alternative" medicine or cannabis in lieu of real medicine? I agree with you that its a load of bunk, but if we want people to have more rights over their own bodies and medical care, we have to accept that some people will do stupid things. Its the price of freedom.

TIL: When using the frontpage or top, reddit only searches a random fifty of the reddits you subscribe to. If you are subscribe to 100s of reddits, this can cause strange results. by level1in todayilearned

[–]level1[S] 0 points1 point ago

I started to notice that I would get terrible results from the same reddits over and over again. TIL the reason why is because I was subscribed to many low-traffic reddits, and so only a few active reddits reached my front page at a time. I have since purged my reddits down to only active reddits I am actually interested in.
