TROPHY CASE

DAE think the YouTube app is the biggest disgrace of all time? by BoldxFreshin iphone

[–]leokennis 0 points1 point ago

It won't be fixed. Apple hates Google. The will probably remove YouTube at some point and replace it with an alternative (maybe Vimeo?) or remove it altogether.

This is not 2007 anymore. We do not need a dedicated app for web video streaming.

Push coming to Sparrow -- yearly subscription required by msderpin iphone

[–]leokennis 3 points4 points ago

It kinda sucks, but for push Sparrow needs to run its own push server that regularly checks your Gmail account using your Gmail credentials.

When they made an iPhone e-mail app from scratch for $2,99, they probably didn't factor this server - with huge security needs - into the price.

If they improve Sparrow further (correct label colors, font size option, other stuff I do not care about but you maybe do) I'd pay about $5 a year for push.

I walked the Wicklow Way, a 6-7 day trek through the county of Wicklow. It looked like this. Except it was sunny. And 25 degrees celsius.

Where be your St. Patrick now, laddy?

I Quit OS X for Linux by goodbyeStevein apple

[–]leokennis -1 points0 points ago

This is the kind of stuff I'm talking about:

the definition of open: "mkdir android ; cd android ; repo init -u git://android.git.kernel.org/platform/manifest.git ; repo sync ; make"

I know this is Android, not a Liniux desktop OS, but the idea's the same.

[–]leokennis 1 point2 points ago

I'm 100% sure you are right. Anything I can do in OS X I can do faster and better in GNU/Linux if I learned and remembered the gazillion commands, scripts and whatnots I would have to manually enter to make it happen.

Why doesn't the Weather App Icon show the weather in your location instead of 73 and sunny all the time? by NewLeavesin iphone

[–]leokennis -1 points0 points ago

If they made this choice everytime in iOS, we would either die of options overload or whine all day long about the crappy battery life.

"Giving us the option" is a choice more commonly made by Android, which is characterized by users manually enabling and disabling WiFi and GPS all day long, since the OS doesn't manage if for the user.

Why doesn't the Weather App Icon show the weather in your location instead of 73 and sunny all the time? by NewLeavesin iphone

[–]leokennis 6 points7 points ago

It would have to fetch acurate weather data every 10 minutes (GPS, 3G or WiFi), which would drain the battery.

The calendar icon only shows the current date because it's data that is available offline.

Reddit i need a new mouse and maybe a mousepad, and i'm afraid of buying the magic mouse, are there alternatives? by zeitg3istin apple

[–]leokennis 0 points1 point ago

  • Buy the Logitech mouse that fits your hand best and has all the buttons you need.

  • Use it for the coming 15 years since they are the best mice ever.

Why wasn't I told? Max Payne out for iOS. Universal app for just $2.99 by onetownin apple

[–]leokennis -1 points0 points ago

I couldn't jump over the wall in the tutorial (where you first have to jump on a dumpster, then on a AC-unit and then over the wall, this was on an iPhone), since I need one d-pad for walking, one d-pad for direction and a button for jumping. How am I to push this (way too small) button? With my nose?

I rage quit after 15 minutes. They deserve my money so they can keep developing games for better gamers than me...

Poll: How many of you use Anti-Virus on OS X? by john_alanin apple

[–]leokennis -1 points0 points ago

Nope. I don't click on random shit and give permission to everything that asks for it. This keeps 99% of crap out (like it also does on Windows installations). The other 1% is kept out by OS X's more robust permissions architecture (this is where even experienced Windows users get bitten in the ass).

Getting New Cans, Considering Denon AHD2000s. by Stiev0Kniev0in headphones

[–]leokennis 1 point2 points ago

Very comfortable, beautiful cans. Two big considerations:

  • They are not portable at all. Don't fold, cannot handle being thrown in a bag, absolutely huge. Not even for an evening walk.
  • Buy an amp. Volume will not be a problem when driven straight from an iPod (for example). However, they sound super boring when they have inadequate power behind them, like a wet fart but less exciting. Give them some power and they will shine though: warm, rich, spatial and detailed sound.

Suggestions for a newbie with a ~$200 budget? by MonkeyFodderin headphones

[–]leokennis 0 points1 point ago

In my opinion, you ca go two directions with this budget:

  • Ultrasone HFI-780: These have a big bass, which rock-wise really shines on bands like The White Stripes, Foo Fighters, RATM etc. Since they also have a large soundstage (for closed cans) and very good treble, these are often called "closed Grado's". They are easily driven from and iPod.
  • AK K271 MKII: Very detailed sound, very comfortable and an even bigger soundstage than the HFI-780. Bass is noticeably thinner though, and it is slightly harder to drive. These are the cans I'd recommend for less "big drum, guitar walls" kind of rock like Dire Straits, Death Cab For Cutie, The Doors etc.

How does the new Readability app stack up against Instapaper? by poritskyin iphone

[–]leokennis 4 points5 points ago

I have been using Instapaper for a long time, and Readability (of course) since today. Their differences to me are like the differences between Chrome and Safari:

  • Instapaper (Chrome) is more explicitly on the cutting edge (export as ePub etc.) and has a lot more options and thingies you can alter (besides font: line height, column width, brightness, pagination, tilt scrolling, auto-darkmode). Also the app seems focussed on very smooth performance.
  • Readability (Safari) chooses for sensible defaults, and only a little room for your own preferences. It's a lot prettier, with more tasteful fonts and a slightly off-white color scheme. Text options are limited (3 of the 5 available fonts are completely useless for long text reading, the other 2 are very nice) and only a few size options are available. There is a manual dark mode. All other options mentioned above for Instapaper (like column width) aren't available in Readability. The Readability bookmarklet produces better articles: images are placed at the correct portion of the article and almost all of the BS is cut from the articles (Instapaper converted articles often show "Share this on Facebook!" etc. at the bottom, as it thinks this is part of the article). The performance of Readability however, is worse: new articles take longer to download, scrolling isn't always smooth even on a 4S, clicking on an article is not always responsive and it can take up to 5 seconds to load an article.

In short, Readability comes of as more of an iOS app than Instapaper. Then again the latter has a proven track record and we know about the dedication of Marco Ament to the app. With Readability, I wouldn't be surprised if the service will stop to be free in the future. With Instapaper, I know it won't happen.

I am going Readability-only for a week, and am genuinely curious about the outcome.

This was Spaces / Expose in 10.5. Oh how I miss it. by serpixin apple

[–]leokennis 2 points3 points ago

It is possible. Say you have Safari in space 1 and iTunes in space 2, and I want both in space 1:

  • In space 1, I click the Mission Control shortcut.
  • While holding Alt/Option, I click on the small preview of space 2: space 2's content now fills the big bottom preview area.
  • I drag iTunes windows from space 2 to space 1.
  • Now I left click on the small preview of space 1 and am taken to space 1 , now containing both windows.

AKG K518's or... by Sergetovein headphones

[–]leokennis 1 point2 points ago

I have a pair of K518 DJ's:

First of: make sure you get the K518LE version; it comes in all kinds of tacky colors, but it has a 1 meter cable. The K518DJ has 3 meters of cable, which is very unpractical when on the move.

Second: yes, the clamp more than your average headphone. It's slightly uncomfortable. However, I can have them one for 2 hours, then I need 15 minutes without them and I can go for 2 hours again. Long enough for a commute. Also the high clamping force means almost unparalleled blocking of outside noise.

Third: they sound dark. They have a lot of bass, both low- and midbass. Highs are adequate, mids are a little recessed. The sound is great for a portable but lacks detail compared to larger and/or more expensive headphones. They are however very easy to drive and they have a very lively and exciting sound. I'd rather have only these than for example an expensive Denon that bores you to death.

Finally: build quality is actually very good. At first, the headband, the earcups, the cable etc. all feel very flimsy. However, everything holds up perfectly. Its looks are deceiving, but in a good way.
