My two birds want sleep by Dark_Abaddonin birdpics

I love it when my cockatiel gets sleepy. He's just so cute, and so are your two.

So I snapped a picture of a grey eagle yesterday, look at the names on BOTH street signs! by mynexgenin pics

[–]leebird 6 points7 points ago

The palm trees, St. Augustine grass, shallow curbs and the architecture of the house in the background give it away. I had to check that it wasn't my in-law's neighborhood, but they live in a neighborhood with other eagle-based names, in another city.

$200, best buy or walmart?

For that price, assuming you can find something, it's probably going to be a crapshoot. Just get whatever they're selling, and plan to replace it within 18 months.

Bird Logic by froman15in fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu

[–]leebird 2 points3 points ago

Birds are some of nature's finest trolls. My pet cockatiel has been known, when it's time for him to go back to his cage, to take off, fly around my entire apartment in the most circuitous possible path and land on whatever seat I was sitting in previously. He has this look on his face, this look of 'motherfucker, I have wings. I decide when its time to go back to my cage.'

I'm 17 and my mom just technically abandoned me. Is there anything I need to know that can help me. by zzenterin AskReddit

Additionally, my parents are giving me a 10% loan so Im putting down 10% but not paying PMI.

I didn't think that it was allowable to use a loan of any sort as downpayment. Unless it is a 'nudge nudge wink wink, Son, pay this back when you can' loan that they claimed was a gift?

My wife and I (both 25) were two of the lucky ones. She's a CPA with a MS in accountancy, and I have an MS in Engineering, so we both managed to get good jobs without too much hassle. We realize the value of saving, etc, and we also said 'fuck it, real estate prices and interest rates aren't going to stay this low forever, so let's take advantage of it and buy a house.'

So now we're closing on our first home in a couple of weeks.

Realistically, how dangerous is using a mobile phone on a plane? by DrMuayThaiin askscience

[–]leebird 0 points1 point ago

Realistically, there really isn't much of a danger for using mobile phones and other electronics on planes. One can find headsets for use in general aviation aircraft with Bluetooth, so that the person wearing the headset can use their phone to make calls, or to listen to music, or whatever. I even had my flight instructor call his girlfriend while I was landing the plane. I would send my girlfriend pre-prepared texts at certain points in the flight so she wouldn't freak out.

The FAA can approve certain devices to be used throughout a flight (example). Approvals like this, however, are restricted to specific devices, on specific aircraft (with specific avionic suites) for specific operators. It would become logistically difficult for the FAA to try to test all of the permutations of devices, avionics, airline interior trims, and aircraft to certify that there isn't any danger. This doesn't even take into account the possibility of an individual altering the hardware inside one of these devices either for nefarious or benign purposes. So, while there is a very, very, very small chance of something happening, it is non-zero, and that is too large for the FAA to change their regulations.

Apparently, if you wear the hood of our graduation gowns wrong, you look like you're part of a vagina cult. by maip23in pics

[–]leebird 5 points6 points ago

The colors of the lining are determined by school, but the color of the trim is determined by discipline.

So anyone who has a hood for their graduation with a degree in Music is eligible for the vagina cult.

Some schools do hoods for undergrad, but they're becoming few and far between.

Yes it is. The fastest pit stop time from that race (2012 Spanish F1 Grand Prix) as I recall was 3.6 seconds.

Any Charlotte Redditor pilots? by Lincolns_Hatin Charlotte

I'd also like to know about this. I got my PPL a few years ago, but with 'school' followed by 'no job' then the combo of 'getting married' and 'buying a house', I haven't simultaneously had both time and money to fly for 5 years or so.

We can always dream that there's some rich redditor who owns a plane, can't we?

When I had linux on my main personal computer, I set up a scheduled task to wget the image from static.die.net (or something like that) every hour. I really liked it, but I didn't know of this desktop earth when I went back to Windows (hurray windows 7). Thus, I set up a .bat to use the windows version of wget to get the image and make windows change to the new picture of the earth, by copying the image twice into the folder, and changing desktop background every 15 minutes or so. I then saved the picture in a folder based on day and month.

Then I decided that I should stop procrastinating and get to work on my thesis.

There was a similar picture posted that showed a wider view, which had the 'Senna' over the car. If it weren't for the bright red fire suppression equipment in the foreground, that would be an incredibly surreal picture for a background.

Using linux and 'motion' or 'ZoneMinder' should work well. I've used motion before, and it worked well enough, but ZoneMinder seems like it might be a bit easier to use.

Apartment search by captainobvious42in Charlotte

[–]leebird 0 points1 point ago

I lived for a few months at Windsor at the Vinoy (or something like that). I worked down on Westinghouse Blvd for part of that time (we moved our office to the big office park right next to the apartment after a couple of months, which was why I lived there) and it wasn't too terrible getting down I-85 towards the airport most days. Maybe once or twice per month it seems like there's something wrong with traffic, but you probably would have to deal with that anywhere.
