"Nobody wants the girl whose cupcake is licked." by daffodilhillin TwoXChromosomes

[–]leavenworth 0 points1 point ago

I once read a sex ed book for an abstinence-only class and while they emphasized purity for men, the way the book framed it was basically "Ladies, you don't want to ruin yourself for your future husbands. And guys, you don't want to ruin some girl for their future husbands. That's someone's daughter"

Because it's impossible for any woman NOT to want a giant diamond ring. by ohreallynowzin TwoXChromosomes

[–]leavenworth 1 point2 points ago

Her ring actually has two diamonds on either side of the center ruby. The few articles I've read haven't mentioned whether they are cruelty-free or not. Just wanted to add that in because people are complaining about a ring that has three freaking precious stones on it.

Sometimes if you're working one job and looking for another, the conflicting schedules of both employers make you do weird things.

Abusive relationships: is there a line? by rowgerwayin AskReddit

New Community Head Writers Are Meeting Current Writers to Talk About Staying by torpidcelerityin community

[–]leavenworth 1 point2 points ago

I disagree. SONY and NBC are the ones who screwed Dan over, not the new writers/showrunners. It's not their fault that they were the people picked. Until we have a reason to think they're bad at what they're doing, let's direct the anger in the appropriate directions.

Former Cheers showrunner's take on Dan Harmon's firing by Rendlein community

[–]leavenworth 0 points1 point ago

I'm not saying there aren't terrible shows, but the ability to purchase DVDs and to watch and rewatch episodes online has definitely allowed the best shows to really pull themselves together and shine. It has allowed comedies to become more subtle in their humor, because a great episode can be watched four or five times and shown to friends, so a viewer not picking up on a joke the first time has time to find it. It's also improved the quality of the dramas, because writers aren't just writing towards random cliff hangers to keep viewers watching every week. Those who work for networks like AMC and HBO know that a lot of money comes from fans wanting to rewatch the show a year or two later.

They're doing what they are intended to do, but they aren't drawing a full picture. And as I said upthread, it's not just NBC's problem.

I didn't mean to single out NBC here when I said "no one in network television", and there would have to be a huge overhaul to make both the networks and the advertisers realize the opportunities they have here. That said, it would be a profitable one for all involved, once they figure it out.

Sure, but even if Hulu is making a network 1/8 of what television is making them, that doesn't mean that they should count Hulu viewers as a 0 in their viewership ratings.

[–]leavenworth 25 points26 points ago

Hulu makes NBC money, and for some reason, those numbers are not considered when they look at what shows are successful. And of course we're not entitled to a show just because we like it, but acting like it's the 90s and saying that no one watching the show due to the Nielsen numbers is ridiculous.

Ken Levine seems to think the only thing that has changed about showrunners from his day is that they are more visible. I totally disagree. Television in general has entered a golden age where it can be considered artistic, when in the past it was considered entertainment. In entertainment, we rarely peek behind the curtain to see who is creating what, but in art, we do.

I'm not saying MAS*H or Cheers or the Fugitive weren't art, but they were exceptions in their day and their series finales still beat out some of the modern Super Bowls and Olympics on the most watched television broadcasts.

Levine says that the reason Harmon is being treated like this is because his show isn't successful enough for him to act out. What we know is that the thing that is hurting Community, and the thing that got us the haitus, and the thing that got Dan Harmon fired, is that it is successful, but that that doesn't matter anymore, because no one in network television is paying attention to how young people watch a television series. Any former writer who wants to talk about Community's failures without mentioning Hulu or Nielsen isn't looking at the big picture.

Have you ever worked in/with television? NBC is the network. It has the power. Saying NBC didn't do this is like saying a president had nothing to do with a bill passed during his tenure that he didn't veto. You really think a guy who worked on MAS*H, Cheers, Dharma and Greg, and Everybody Loves Raymond knows less about networks and studios than you?

Community's most esoteric pun yet. by RockyRoadtoDublinin community

[–]leavenworth 3 points4 points ago

That's the obvious joke, but I'd say it's esoteric in the sense that the Dean makes Dean-related puns, and Chang makes Chang related puns, so only Community fans would actual get that added layer of humor.

Yeah, it's probably a great job, even if you don't like the actual show. I think he's more complimenting Dan Harmon on how he uses actors who, due to their appearance, age, or background, usually fill two dimensional, stereotypical roles in diverse and interesting ways.

Usually when one person sues another, that's the civil side of things, not the criminal, so he'd be able to sue whether or not there were repercussions. For example, OJ Simpson was declared not guilty criminally, but the male victim's family successfully sued him in a civil suit for murder.
