Sunglasses tip: hardware store by lekotarin Frugal

[–]laplandsix 1 point2 points ago

I'm a huge fan of polarized sunglasses, however they're really hard to find and very expensive when you can find them. Then I discovered the fishing section in my local department store. Polarized glasses can be had in a variety of styles and prices...some as low as $10. So that's another option as well!

Take a trip with me down memory lane as I reminisce about my childhood neighborhood arcade by scherzoxin cade

[–]laplandsix 1 point2 points ago

My dad owned an arcade in the late 70's. This was in a VERY small midsouth town. It was mostly pinball and pool when he owned it. With a couple of early arcade games mixed in. He sold it around 1978 or 1979...Juuuuust before video games really blew up...and before I had a proper chance to enjoy them!

The arcade was probably 3-5 pinballs, 3 pool tables and 7-10 arcades, with the occasional oddball game like bowling or some such. Plenty of trash cans for the kids to spit into and plenty of room to move around in! There was a front dining area with booths and a snack bar. All in all it was heaven.

I spent many happy Saturday afternoons circling that arcade with my best friend trying to figure out what to spend my last quarter on. To this day I can still recognize the smell of that particular mixture of skoal and pine sol.

I can remember when Super Mario brothers first made its appearance in our town. My older brother and his highschool buddies talked about it and strategized about it for hours when they got together. I can remember asking my bro what kind of game it was and he just replied "You can't even describe it".

It closed down sometime around 1992 unfortunately.

RIP Cone 'N Cue.

Weird Al's polka version of "Buddy Holly" that got cut from Bad Hair Day's polka medly by 123not-itin weirdal

[–]laplandsix 0 points1 point ago

If you watch the bonus features of the DVD of UHF Al shows a bunch of deleted material including a couple of characters and at least one subplot that was cut from the film. He also makes mention of lots of other stuff that they didn't show because it wasn't very funny.

Has anyone EVER used dragon naturally speaking successfully for general computer work? I had a user who was just convinced that he would become 100% more productive if I bought it for him. I did, and showed him how to train it and use it. Of course he's never used it. I suspect that accounts for many of their sales.

I really liked that one. It was a genuine interview that was really interesting. I get a little tired of all the joke interviews and stuff.

It's a tactical turtleneck you jackass. I was actually thinking of being the around-the-office archer, but the old turtleneck would be quite a bit cheaper huh?

Those skilled in scripting, which do you prefer for Windows environments? Batch, VB, PowerShell? Why? by vocatusin sysadmin

[–]laplandsix 1 point2 points ago

While I'm not a fan of the VBish syntax, I've been able to automate stuff from taking 3 days of tedious manual process down to 15 minutes of watching a script run. Add in the .exe compilation and you've got a really nice tool.

It sounds like the battery is dead. If the phone is 5 years old and still on the original battery it may have just croaked. Rechargeable batteries DO wear out eventually.

It's also possible that your battery isn't charging when you plug it in. That would mean that the charger is bad or possibly the little socket on your phone is bad.

A new battery or a new charger will be far cheaper than a new phone. If it's your charging socket on the phone you're going to be out of luck.

Yeah I use PAR regularly, but it can produce some HUGE executables. Activestate PERL seems to be a little more optimized than Strawberry PERL with the former generating ~4 meg .exes and the latter generating ~12 meg .exes. It definitely works, but it's still a bitch for me to transfer a 12 meg executable around.

[–]laplandsix 8 points9 points ago

I prefer PERL believe it or not. It's got some pretty damn good windows bindings. It's a bitch to run on other windows machines though. I also use AutoIt which is a fairly complete scripting language. I suspect PowerShell is the way of the future though.

Wow, this tip just went from "interesting" to "totally bad ass".

As an added bonus you can easily have a "burn phone" you can take with you to places you might not want your smart phone for fear of theft/damage/whatever.

This is a pretty interesting idea. You're essentially virtualizing your telephone number so it's no longer tied to a specific physical device.

I wonder if google voice would let you could create a sort of hunt group where if your smart phone is off the call goes to your tracphone, rings there twice, then goes to your landline, ect. That way you don't have to fiddle with maintaining the google voice number pointed to the proper device.

The only thing I'd want to nail down is texting. Every time I look at a non-unlimited prepaid phone plan they hose you on texting. Tracphone says you can get "up to" 3 texts per minute of airtime. So depending on how much you text that could hurt you.

Thanks for sharing though. I'm gonna have to check out google voice now!

Celebrity Chef Mario Batali Goes on Food Stamps Budget by freepinellasin Frugal

[–]laplandsix 1 point2 points ago

I guess the part that stuck with me is this

On Twitter, many people are applauding the chef and marveling at his ability to exercise self-control despite his access to high-quality foods.

So I'm more irritated of the coverage and reactions to what he's doing more than anything. But then again, I can't think of a time I'm NOT irritated with the way the media covers an event, so that's not unusual!

What makes a *bad* sysadmin by barneydesmondin sysadmin

[–]laplandsix 0 points1 point ago

For me it all comes down to what I'd rather be doing. Would I rather type 3,000 names in from a spreadsheet to create a folder tree, or would I rather do a little programming. I can tell you I'd most rather do ANYTHING than something boring.
