TIL why door puzzles are so ridiculously easy. They aren't there to lock outsiders out, but to keep the Draugr in. by Sessinein skyrim

[–]kristakahashi 4 points5 points ago*

I feel your pain. For weeks I tried to decipher those stupid wall carvings trying to figure the claw doors out. I even started to see things that weren't there, like some of the braziers burning brighter than others indicating which carvings were to be studied.

Eventually I resorted to the same brute force technique. After a while I just got so frustrated with claw doors I Googled the answer, to find the markings were right on the damn claw all along! It wasn't even a puzzle, all you do is match the pictures. What a joke. What a joke I am.

Yeah, you have to sort of roll with the glitches and limitations as they come.

In other words, my plan was to make it that given Rolff's history, no one would suspect he was murdered. Instead I have to be satisfied with the fact that he is even more convinced of a Dark Elf conspiracy, which makes his views seem even crazier to the people around him.

Rolff: I was poisoned, I tell you, POISONED into attacking them darkies!

Elda Early-Dawn: Sure you were Rolff. We all know how you feel about the Dunmer. Was only a matter of time before you tried to kill one, or two, or seven.

I had planned out this dude's death for almost an entire week. To cover my tracks, I got a potent frenzy poison from the alchemy shop in Falkreath, and then rode to Windhelm.

I proceeded to shadow him for days, committing his routine to memory as he left Candlehearth Hall every night at midnight. Before he began to heckle the Dunmer, I'd slip him bottles of mead every night so that he'd get in the habit of drinking at that time, thinking the divines had blessed him with free booze.

Then on the last night, I slipped him the poison and swiped his dagger. He drank the bottle and went into a frenzy, and got slaughtered by the Dark Elves leaving the Gnisis Cornerclub.

Needless to say I was pretty fucking pissed when he didn't die.

Shinichiro Watanabe (Bebop) and Yoko Kanno (also Bebop) are making a new series "Sakamichi no Apollon" (trailer inside) by RogueAngelXin anime

The names got me excited, but alas it's an adaptation of someone else's work. So it won't have the same soul as Watanabe's previous stuff, but worth checking out nonetheless.

It gets particularly awkward if you give Annekke some kinky Forsworn armor.

Syglja: "Mom, what are you wearing?"

Annekke: "You don't like it? It was a gift from your husband."

There's just way too many Western fantasy games, and not enough that explore Asian mythology.

I'm still waiting for Japan to make an open-world game in a Feudal Japan setting, which is why I hope Skyrim succeeds over there and changes the paradigm. Way of the Samurai was probably the closest thing they had but those games were limited to a single town.

Final Fantasy is no place for thieves by comicsdude97in geek

[–]kristakahashi 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, it happens to everyone, because for the first 15 to 20 levels or so he's better with a weapon, and there's nothing to suggest that his knuckles will eventually be able to punch holes through warmechs.

Pshaw, the thief can't use distance as an excuse. The Black Belt delivers massive damage with just his bare hands.

Less Is More: Gabe Newell On Game Pricing by TSCin gaming

[–]kristakahashi 0 points1 point ago

It seems like they're taking advantage of an old retail store trick. Instead of pricing a game at $10(which did not increase gross revenue), price it at $40 and sell it for $10 as part of a 75% off sale.

Although both prices are identical, the urgency created by a short term sale price(I have to buy NOW to save!!!) draws more buyers and promotional word of mouth.

Gaming, I hear you're tired of modern JRPG's (cough FFXIII cough). Try this. by iWriteYourMusicin gaming

[–]kristakahashi 4 points5 points ago

Albeit the characters were typical JRPG fare, I really enjoyed the world of Xenoblade Chronicles. Gorgeous, expansive environments and an amazing catalog of beasts that just blend into the various locations, which really helps the immersion. The story is also surprisingly mature and interesting for a JRPG.

There's also tons of customizing so you can tweak your party's look and fighting prowess, which keeps the gameplay fun and refreshing. I sound like a commercial.

"Wi-fi refugees" live in radio quiet zone to avoid EM radiation - is "electromagnetic hypersensitivity" a real disease? by thecatinaboxin skeptic

[–]kristakahashi 0 points1 point ago

Not to butt into the conversation here, but the way you describe those experiments they seem to hinge on subjects experiencing immediate reactions to WiFi, rather than testing for long term exposure to high frequencies.

For instance, if you ran the same experiment with carbon monoxide or radiation instead of WiFi, the subjects couldn't tell you when you "turned it on," but the health risks would certainly show up in the long term.

I agree that wifi being bad for you is probably bunk, but that experiment sounds like it was deliberately setup to make people look stupid.

Portal: No Escape by HH_Boba_Fettin Portal

[–]kristakahashi 1 point2 points ago

why Portal works as a game and not a movie

Not only that, but think about how the story evolves in each medium. Portal's twist works because a gamer buys into the idea that Chell volunteered for testing, whereas the same scenario would not work in a movie. In a movie, Chell, despite her pleasant surroundings, would look confused when she woke up or scream at the security cameras in frustration, "Why am i here? What do you want from me?" immediately alerting the viewer that something is amiss.

I'm assuming that's why this short film chose to put Chell immediately in a position of despair rather than follow the outline of the game. Perhaps that makes Portal an example where the storytelling is enhanced by the video game medium.

Once you get older, I think a good rule of thumb is to avoid any series where the protagonist is underage, as that is likely the target audience.

As aggravating as cyber-attacks from China are, I can't imagine the U.S. doesn't (or wouldn't) conduct cyber-espionage themselves. I'd venture that's a given when playing the superpower game of thrones.

Foxconn To Replace Human Workers With 1 Million Robots by spectrumitein robotics

I'm guessing that at some point when robots are responsible for almost all labor, the 95% of humans without any employable skills will be able to survive solely on welfare from their respective governments, collected via tax on corporate profits.

That way brilliant minds who want to improve their station in life can do so through new inventions, engineering and whatnot, and the rest of us dummies can live off the production of robot slave labor.
