This is just one reason why I stopped reading men's fashion magazines and started coming here. by battleflagin malefashionadvice

I think you're bending over backwards to make a point - if you have an unusually flat running shoe, then you shouldn't try to argue that "you can lift in running shoes". You can safely lift heavy weights in unusually flat running shoes in the same way that you can do a marathon in unusually well heeled Converse shoes.

Is this plant a weed? by hoffnutsisdopein answers

[–]krisssy 16 points17 points ago

Its name is Hyacinthoides non-scripta: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyacinthoides_non-scripta

From the article:

Bluebells are widely planted as garden plants, either among trees or in herbaceous borders. They flower at the same time as hyacinths, Narcissus and some tulips. Their ability to reproduce vegetatively using runners, however, means that they can spread rapidly, and may need to be controlled as weeds.

I think your point is totally valid.

Just to politely point out that he isn't forcing his advice onto people - people are simply linking to it and visiting it. So in that sense, it's not necessarily unsolicited advice; in his own words, "30×30 is a set of instructions to my teenage self".

Thanks.

I agree with you - but also that it would be historically interesting to see proof. Maybe just an old medal or news clipping. Like you say though, it won't alter my life if I don't see it.

I didn't know about the different term in the US! Thank you for educating me.

Another interesting tidbit on Brazilian "bootlegging"; so many people pirate films and games in Brazil (owed to these 'illegal' but generally accepted market places), that the price of games, electronics and physical digital media is usually 3x the price of items in Europe.

[–]krisssy 2 points3 points ago

Yes, I mean the physical DVD sellers at dodgy market stalls. In Brazilian cities, the service you receive at pirate DVD stalls is superb; if a disc doesn't play properly or skips at all, you can return it any time for a refund or a replacement. No legal shop can beat that sort of service!

(Not sure if this is the same in all countries.)

As far as I remember, the "you wouldn't steal a car" intro played, then the studios, and then the top DVD menu. No trailers that I can recall.

This is through DVD vendors in Brazil; I'm not sure how it comes to be.

[–]krisssy 5 points6 points ago*

Oddly, I've only ever seen that on pirated versions of films. I think those who rip it must tend to add it in at the start of the disc for added irony.

Edit: I've just learnt that 'pirated' in the US means a digital copy whereas 'bootlegging' better describes what I mean here (i.e. physical copies of DVD films).

IAmA Guitarist in a Death Metal band.. in Pakistan by ibzziin IAmA

[–]krisssy 0 points1 point ago

Superb! That could mean for a very exciting sound. You will already know that while Nile are American, they aim for an Ancient Egyptian effect by using instruments not normally associated with metal, such as this introduction: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFZ1Llkic9Y

A sitar could have a similar effect.

[–]krisssy 3 points4 points ago

In a similar vein, have you considered infusing any Pakistani musical elements into your music? Similar to how Sepultura use some traditional Brazilian instruments in some of their songs - does doing the same but with Pakistani instruments interest you at all? Or do you guys prefer to keep it a more mainstream sound? (Nothing wrong with either - just curious.)

Umm, thanks Google Analytics? by normalizein geek

[–]krisssy 3 points4 points ago*

I saw this the other day in Chrome (I think) as well - it seems to be an Analytics bug; whatever's on the clipboard is shown as a title tooltip on Analytics graphs.

Edit: Doesn't happen in Chrome - only Firefox 11. Must be a browser bug, the behaviour doesn't seem to occur in Firefox 12.

Avería: The average font by bouncingsoulin designthought

[–]krisssy 3 points4 points ago

I think it would be like averaging all of the faces in all portraits in the Louvre by century of completion; and then showing the average blurred face by century.

I see that your analogy is a good point, but the typography version of it would be getting hand writing samples from 2,000 individuals, and merging a random letter that they had written into an 'average letter' - which would indeed be a bland shade of brownish-grey.

I was really curious: how comes the video is shot in a warehouse? Is that his main place of work? He mentions that he'll return later to "the office" - why doesn't he just work at his office? I don't expect anyone to know, I just had to voice this question because I can't stop thinking about it; having watched him put pencil shavings in a bag, wearing a shirt, crouched on the ground.

I would love to own one of his pencils, and maybe his book: http://www.amazon.com/How-Sharpen-Pencils-Theoretical-Contractors/dp/1612190405
