Not "borderline"... she is definitely obese. "Morbidly" (at least 35 bmi) is less certain. But she is definitely in the "at risk for DMII" range just by appearance, as far as I can tell. Not that that makes her a bad person.

Yep. Best beer selection in the state. And don't worry, I'm only stuck here for a month.

I am currently drinking KBS in Muncie, IN. This place sucks except for the Heorot. Though the weather the last two days has been lovely.

The part of the bible rich republicans don't like to read. Matthew 19:21-24 by KnewHerein politics

[–]knightofni451 1 point2 points ago

Those loophole attempts are especially stupid if you look at the verse in context; in the next couple verses Jesus further explains his words:

26The disciples were even more amazed, and said to each other, “Who then can be saved?”

27Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.”

So there's no need to "explain away" the camel-needle thing; in the text Jesus clearly is talking about an impossible act.

When food packaging says it has X amount of calories, is that the amount of calories in the food, or the typical amount absorbed by the body? by chrisphelpsin askscience

[–]knightofni451 16 points17 points ago

Cool. I think it would also be really interesting to see how it is determined how many calories are "burned" by specific exercise activities, and whether these estimates take aerobic vs. anaerobic metabolism into account. For example, let's say that some resource says that doing 100 pushups burns 100 calories. If those calories are provided by aerobically-metabolized glucose, then about 25g of glucose were "burned by the exercise," because each gram of glucose can produce about 4 calories worth of ATP. If, however, the 100 calories were provided by "burning" glucose anaerobically, then the exercise should have burned up to 19 times more glucose, because anaerobic metabolism is up to 19 times less efficient at producing useable ATP from the glucose "fuel." I'm just curious if "calories burned by exercise" estimates take this idea into account.

Santorum: JFK's 1960 speech on separation of church and state 'makes me want to throw up' by networkdeskpeonin politics

Yep. I live in Indiana, where you cannot buy carry-out alcohol anywhere in the state on Sundays (though there's an exception for breweries/wineries... yay growler refills!) and groceries can't sell cold beer (but they can sell cold wine for some bizarre reason). There have been movements to try to get the law changed, but it turns out that the people actually lobbying to keep the status quo are the liquor stores, not religious people. They think that having to stay open for an extra day would only drive up their overhead without increasing overall sales, and obviously they love that they have a government-mandated monopoly on cold beer sales. So even though religious busybodies were probably the original supporters of "blue laws" back in the day, the reasons why they remain on the books to this day are much more economic and nuanced.

Personally I don't know how I feel about it... the libertarian in me realizes the laws are absurd on their surface, but the beer lover in me doesn't want liquor stores to face higher costs and be forced to make cuts on their craft and rare selections. It's pretty easy for the responsible drinker to just plan ahead and load up on supplies saturday. Or just go to a bar.

Serious intellectual question: has anyone ever actually tried to run (or do whatever type of cardio) while watching porn? I wonder if it would make for a better workout due to psychological effects, or the alterations in bloodflow and sympathetic/parasympathetic nervous output would be detrimental...

Metronidazole (aka Flagil) classically is thought to cause a disulfiram-like reaction with ethanol, which means that it prevents your body from breaking down acetaldehyde (the crappy, toxic byproduct your body makes from alcohol) so it builds up and you feel terrible (nausea, skin flushing, shortness of breath, tachycardia, headache; basically a terrible hangover). So you probably shouldn't drink while taking it.

So glad to see the upvotes on this comment. If the waiter was a jerk who provided truly horrendous service, the proper response is talking to the manager or leaving constructive criticism. Saying "I'm sorry, but you provided horrible service and it would be wrong to leave you a tip" actually tells the waiter that they fucked up. Trying to tell the waiter that you're a bigger man just makes you look like a jerk, and the waiter will forever go around showing his friends what a douche you were. And rightfully so, quite frankly.

I am so sorry. I'm a med student and I've seen quite a few CF patients (mostly kids), but never talked with any about the implications for their romantic lives. I'm curious do you blame these guys? Do you feel that they are jerks (or just a little less virtuous) for not wanting to be with someone who, statistically speaking, will die long before them? I can imagine that after falling in love, the daily comorbidity/treatment annoyances wouldn't be too much of an issue, but do you resent potential mates for being wary of falling love when they know that it will likely mean that they'll go through the pain of losing a loved one at a relatively young age?

I wouldn't judge/blame you regardless. Just curious how it feels to be in your shoes.

This is a legitimate point, but I think the problem is that we've all just been there before too many times. It gets really tiring to have the same debate more than a few times, so for me personally when I see a thread from yet another newbie atheist asking some sincere question/debate-starter, I just have no interest in responding; I've already had the same conversation a thousand times in person or perhaps online. Maybe that's lazy or uncharitable of me.

Mine has a bit of a twist:

When I was about 7 my mom once heard me use the word "faggot" (I had no idea what it meant, just heard my cool cousin say it once), and she immediately forbade me ever to say that word again. Fast forward to present day: I am now 22 and my mom has become something of an anti-gay fundamentalist, so now I'm the one who has to scold her for using homophobic epithets.

Exactly. Buffet's plan would mean that their re-election depends on actual results (i.e. the deficit) rather than just on how much/well they campaign.
