Help me Understand Hockey by MacroSightin hockey

[–]kmad 14 points15 points ago

The one thing that irks me, however, is that it seems like everything is very very chaotic.

That's a normal perspective for new viewers and it's the main reason hockey has so much trouble gaining traction in the US. If you keep watching, you'll start noticing the patterns and strategies. Hint: Try to focus on watching the players and not the puck.

To my eye, there does not seem to be any set plays either, or very rarely if there are.

Set plays are easily read (hockey players have been playing for 20+ years and know all the tricks) so general strategies are better to use in general. However, some of the top players with the best chemistry and playmaking ability (Crosby, Sedin twins, Thornton, Kovalchuk) can orchestrate set plays. You'll also see a lot more set plays on the powerplay, when the offensive team has more time and space to execute.

My question is. When teaching hockey to a young kid, or a amateur like me, what is the general strategy in this game?

Every coach is different, and every team executes slightly different strategies. However, as a general rule, passing is far more volatile and subject to bad bounces in hockey than it is in any other sport, so passing backwards in the defensive or neutral zone can be seen as too risky. One bad bounce and suddenly Zach Parise has a shorthanded breakaway. Also, it's far more difficult to change your direction of momentum on skates than it is on foot (unless you're Pavel Datsyuk), so it's best to keep the direction of the puck forward or lateral so that you don't have to scramble and possibly fall down. Keep the whole play in the peripheral vision of the entire team and you'll have a better chance of success.

I've noticed exercising worsens my acne. What can I do to stop this? by MREpooperin Fitness

[–]kmad 0 points1 point ago

I'm having the same problem. Just today I picked up some spot acne removal cream and I'll see how it works, but I'm still looking for options.

Stopping taking Creatine helped get rid of most of it.

Report: 47 year old goalie Dominik Hasek eyeing NHL comeback by ithasfourtoesin hockey

Hasek is an incredible goalie, probably the best ever, but I wouldn't let him mentor. He's not much of a gentleman.

So, how does r/Fitness do abs? by DrHappyPantsin Fitness

[–]kmad 1 point2 points ago

I do this twice a week. 30-45 seconds as he recommends doesn't burn anymore so I just do each exercise until fatigue.

edit: obviously this is in addition to other compound exercises that residually work my abs, like standing military press and deadlift.

Working at a new warehouse job as a forklift driver. At work I kept to myself but got invited out to party by a couple other warehouse guys. Trying to prove my worth I drank and smoked too much and ended up vomiting and blacking out. On Monday everyone was joking around about it, I'm just slightly grinning and putting up with it. One of the guys says "Yeah kmad I bet Marco had his way with you." Another one says, "Yeah kmad, did you wake up with a condom up your ass?" Everyone's staring at me for a few seconds of silence. I said "Nah, it was on my dick" and the room exploded with laughter.

What was your experience like with Accutane? by Tzeentch99in AskReddit

Yup. Took me three cycles (my acne was particularly bad). But it worked. Only wish I wasn't so scared of the side effects, I would have tried it sooner. Invest in Blistex.

Discussion about the trapezoid by CptnCanuckin hockey

[–]kmad 1 point2 points ago

The way the game is now, I think it should be abolished.

However!

There's much talk about re-adding the red center line (which reinstates the two line pass) in an effort to eliminate the high speed that lends itself to common headshots, resulting in this problematic concussion epidemic. The reason these modifications took place is that the league wanted to create more offense. In the case of the trapezoid rule, if the goalie can't play the puck in certain areas, it's far more likely that the team on offense can gain control of the puck in the offensive zone, which leads to increased likelihood of a scoring chance. This will be necessary if the red line is reinstituted, or else we're going to be dealing with a two-headed dragon of flawless defensive systems as well as rules that propagate the neutral zone trap that led to the horrific dead puck era.
