TROPHY CASE

As an Indian, I've always wondered why India is so damn populated. Why is the subcontinent full of people? by bobloblawblablain AskHistorians

The Red River of the North (in Minnesota/North Dakota/Manitoba) is surrounded by highly fertile land and is sparsely populated. Same goes for the lower Mississippi river between Arkansas, Miss., and Louisiana.

The rivers of eastern China are navigable (and they even built huge canals to link them together) and yet China never favored export crops.

What demands would the Central Powers have demanded if they had won WWI by thatnerdykidin AskHistorians

This is specific to Germany but I think this is along the lines of what you're looking for: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Septemberprogramm

Amusingly, one of the ideas was the creation of a European economic entity dominated by Germany. I guess a century later, they managed to actually achieve that!

Really? Both what I've read and what I've anecdotally observed has been that actuaries are in extremely high demand, mostly because the college classes and professional exams you have to pass are brutal.

Read between the lines. He was a student employee at the planetarium, and got lucky since his boss quit at the time he graduated. And the next time the local government has a budget crunch, who do you think they'd start firing first: teachers, cops, firefighters, or planetarium administrators?

That being said, there are plenty of worse majors you could choose.

Why do civilizations fail when they exceed the capacity of their resources. by GeoManCamin AskHistorians

[–]kleib323 1 point2 points ago

Not always. In the case of Iram, it appears the city was simply abandoned after it ran out of water and the inhabitants moved elsewhere.

[–]kleib323 8 points9 points ago

It depends on which civilization you're talking about, but if you take the Mayans for example, it's not as simple as a chunk of the population just dying off. In that case, overuse of the available land meant poor harvest, which led to localized famines, which resulted in civil war. Wars disrupted trade, which worsened the famine even further, and eventually the society just fell apart.

What was the last inhabited island to be discovered by Europeans and when? by Grokein AskHistorians

[–]kleib323 0 points1 point ago

A new volcanic island formed in 2011 in the Red Sea, so I guess that would be the most recently "discovered" island as it never previously existed.

At least in my state, the experience requirement must be signed off by a CPA (inactive is ok, but they have to have the designation).

Robert Reich to new college grads: "You're f*cked." by ratlaterin economy

[–]kleib323 1 point2 points ago

Gas prices are near all time highs, even if you adjust for inflation. We keep discovering more and more oil in places like North Dakota. And while world demand has risen due primarily to increased Chinese consumption, that country isn't going to be able to sustain 11% annual economic growth. In more mature economies like America and Europe, demand is actually shrinking.

The fact that a petroleum engineer earns $110k fresh out of college is not sustainable, just like how IT guys in the late 90s .com bubble were getting huge salaries. Over time the job market will be flooded with new entrants, and demand will shrink as the commodities boom eventually ends.

I have no idea why you are getting downvoted for making a statement that is both on topic and cites a reliable source to back it up.

Commodity prices are high right now which is why your major is in demand. But eventually they will fall (like what happened in the 1980s) and petroleum engineering won't be quite as lucrative.

Now all the hedge fund assholes who friends in the right places get preferential orders as well.

Why is the stock market designed in such a way that people with special connections get preferential treatment? Is there some justifiable reason for why it should be like this, or does it really just boil down to cronyism and regulatory capture?
