On the 13th my trackpad died, it had to be disconnected, rendering the keyboard useless. This is what I have to do until the new MacBooks are released. by stefcio007in apple

Why did the trackpad have to be disconnected, as opposed to simply plugging in an external mouse?

Irish Spring deodorant. Every time I see Irish Spring soap I always get excited because I think they might have brought the deodorant back. The packaging was nearly identical.

Security firm claims Mac security is "10 years behind" Microsoft by darkplumb90in apple

[–]khoker 1 point2 points ago

Until the last few years, Macs were too small a market to justify

Once upon a time, Microsoft made a web server called "IIS". It held a relatively small market-share compared to Apache, yet had an amazing list of exploits targeted towards it. But that's contrary to what you just said. It turns out, you become the target of attacks because you are easier to exploit -- not because there are more of you.

But OSX is/was rife with exploitable buffer overruns since it's written in C ( not a managed language )

Eh? I don't think "OSX" is written in any one specific language. There's most likey Obj-C, C, and C++ in there.

Check out PwnToOwn, and take note of how early OSX is compromised every year.

I'm not sure what you're getting at there. Safari got exploited. As does Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, etc ...

There is not enough data to suggest that Apple's avoidance of malware has anything to do with their general popularity, so I'm not sure how you arrived at the idea that they had a "free ride" and said ride is "over". Flashback was a single instance of a trojan that, after some evolution, required no interaction from the user (beyond the user going to some website in the first place, and having Java applets enabled).

Apple has seen nothing like Conflickr, MyDoom, ILoveYou, etc ... It would be unfair to say that they've avoided such things simply because of their marketshare. There's no data to support that.

While I think he stated it rather confusingly, I don't think he is trying to say OS X is 10 years behind Windows in terms of security. It is my opinion that he is trying to convey that Microsoft has been dealing with a certain level of malware-popularity for a long time. And Apple may now be moving into that spotlight. In other words, Microsoft has 10+ years more experience with malware (for better or worse) than Apple does;

They will understand very soon that they have the same problems Microsoft had ten or 12 years ago. They will have to make changes in terms of the cycle of updates and so on and will be forced to invest more into their security audits for the software," Kaspersky told CBR.

That's what Microsoft did in the past after so many incidents like Blaster and the more complicated worms that infected millions of computers in a short time. They had to do a lot of work to check the code to find mistakes and vulnerabilities. Now it's time for Apple [to do that]

Macs more likely to carry Windows malware than Mac malware, study finds: One in five Mac computers is likely to carry Windows malware, but only one in 36 is likely to be infected with malware specifically designed for the Mac OS X, according to study performed by antivirus firm Sophos. by Dizzy_Slipin apple

Let's just flesh the numbers out a bit. Look at the sophos blog post. Notice anything weird about the sampling?

A 100,000 strong snapshot of the millions of Mac computers which have recently downloaded Sophos's free Mac anti-virus software, revealed that 20% of Mac computers were carrying one or more instances of Windows malware.

Please explain in any rational terms the sample they've chosen;

100,000 strong out of millions

Why 100,000? Why not all of them?

which have recently downloaded Sophos's free Mac anti-virus software

Why limit the sample to only recent downloads?

So yeah -- I say that sounds like cherry-picking the numbers to me. But you disagree, and I respect that. I backed up my opinion. Can you provide further explanation regarding yours?

Now that Mac malware is becoming more common than ever

Is it? The big deal with Flashback was that it morphed into a drive-by install. But the reality is that most malware, be it Windows, OS X or otherwise, is no longer an exploit of the OS.

Windows constantly gets the brunt of attack vectors inside of Adobe Flash which, unfortunately for Microsoft, twists into "Windows is insecure". OS X just saw the same thing with Java (notwithstanding that a patch was available prior to Apple's updates -- it doesn't matter -- the point is the exploit was not inside OS X itself). But these things are being addressed. OS X doesn't even ship with Adobe's Flash Player. Nor does it ship with Java anymore. For example ... Chrome implements it's own, sandboxed, Flash implementation.

So if you want to intall an anti-virus solution to deal with things you want to install, that's your call. But that's got nothing to do with a Mac "using the Internet". You just installed some software that had some issues. OS X has never been to the point of insecurity where Windows was in the past -- namely, if you put a new install of Windows online (no patches yet installed because you needed to get online to get them) you were guaranteed to be infected in less than 5 minutes. It was a dark time.

Something very important to consider;

Sophos collected malware detection statistics from 100,000 Mac computers that run its free antivirus product and found that 20 percent of them contained one or more types of Windows malware.

That is in no way, shape or form a valid sampling. Let me ask you a question; do you have Sophos Antivirus installed on your OS X box? Let's think about the type of people who do ... folks who are worried they just downloaded (and ran) something weird. These people then get freaked out -- google for "mac antivirus" and install something (like Sophos). They probably do have something bad installed. But that doesn't mean you can derive a 1-in-36 number out of it.

These statistics would be akin to saying "1 out of 2 teenagers have an STD", taken from a sampling of over 100k teenagers who visited an STD clinic.

EDIT: In a conversation below this post, I found some rather peculiar decisions regarding the Sophos choice of collecting their sample data (from their original blog post). I thought it would be useful to promote this information back up to the parent;

A 100,000 strong snapshot of the millions of Mac computers which have recently downloaded Sophos's free Mac anti-virus software, revealed that 20% of Mac computers were carrying one or more instances of Windows malware.

They chose 100,000 out of millions? Why? Why not all of them? Ok, maybe it is some sort of "opt-in feedback" thing many users do not enable. But also; "recently downloaded" strikes me as being a little off as well. Again, why limit the sample? My opinion is that it seems like they are cherry-picking.

I really wish Metra would just attach a dedicated bike car to their trains. A near-empty cattle-car type scenario with something to hang onto and attach your bike to. by khokerin chicago

[–]khoker[S] -1 points0 points ago

Others have already pointed it out, but Metra doesn't open up cars as the train populates. I can assure you that a train leaving Union Station at 8PM isn't getting more crowded as it lumbers out into the 'burbs.

So I don't think the fuel economics of pulling extra/empty cars is necessarily the reason Metra wouldn't pull a "bike car".

To be fair, Metra runs empty cars with their trains all the time that aren't available to customers.

Will Apple eventually abandon the flawed Home Button design that always eventually becomes unresponsive? by RiseDarthVaderin apple

[–]khoker 1 point2 points ago

A device you use every day and carry everywhere is going to be subject to some unique abuse. Every phone (iPhones included) I've ever had has exhibited some form of brokenness after a few years. Buttons become unresponsive, screen gets scratched, headphone jack stops working...

That said, I don't think the Home Button is "flawed" so much as it doesn't stand up to all environments well. What sort of case do you use? For some anecdotal evidence, I don't think I've ever seen anyone with an Otterbox Defender case complain about an unresponsive home button. But my dirtbag friend who banishes his iPhone to the nether-regions of his bi-annually washed jeans seems to have issues more often that most...

Joss, in many ways I've often found you to be the polar opposite of J.J. Abrams. While J.J. seems to have the ability to begin spinning an amazing tale very quickly, he lacks the ability to sustain the story. You, on the other hand, seem to take some time to build up a story, but possess the exceptional ability to keep it growing. That said;

1) Do you feel that the big media players will kill all your projects before giving them a chance?

2) Would you ever consider doing a project with J.J. ?

3) Is there anything you can do to stop Michael Bay from further ruining my childhood?

3a) Will you promise to never cast Shia LaBeouf in anything you do?

As an aside, beware that when purchasing MU bundles you are also "subscribing" to their MacUpdate Membership. The first year appears to be free, but a year after you buy the bundle you will be automatically charged $20 (on the card you bought the bundle with).

That said, I contacted MU and explained how I apparently missed the fine print on that, and they did refund the charges.
