George Lucas is turning his 300,000 sq ft estate into low income housing...to piss of his rich neighbors. by Bambillain news

[–]kevbru 0 points1 point ago

It wasn't even the neighbors, it was a very few folks who are misrepresenting themselves as the HOA of Lucas Valley Estates. They were not duly elected before threatening Lucas, and two have since stepped down since being called out for misrepresenting them. citation

This is a huge blow for the county, and a ridiculous play by the HOA. Neither the Ranch or Big Rock (the other large-ish production facility in Lucas Valley) are a problem. Hell, they aren't even visible from the road. You'd have no idea they were even there!

University of Florida eliminates Computer Science. by Smok3dSalmonin programming

[–]kevbru 0 points1 point ago

I lived in Florida (Orlando) for ten years, and unless you live there, you have know idea how BROKE this state is. There is absolutely NO tax base to run the state, and since so much of the electorate is either lower paid service/vacation industry workers, farmers or tax incentived business, there is no hope of getting the funding voted in. This is why the state is so crazy. Moved to California where I have the crap taxed out of me, but you couldn't pay me enough to go back.

Standards or no, this is simply not the case with any modern compiler. MS, Intel and GCC do not initialize static data to zero.

Pointer magic for efficient dynamic value representations by nikicin programming

The problem is you can't fit anything in a register at that point, which means all work is shuffling and fetching stuff from the cache, which will be much slower. It would be dramatic in tight loops.

Tabs vs Spaces vs Both by hongminheein programming

[–]kevbru 3 points4 points ago

I arrived at my preference objectively. I downloaded dozens of open source projects, and looked at various SDK's, STL's, etc. All of them that has spaces were easily comprehensible, and I could understand what the implementer was doing. Everything with tabs was a wreck and required extensive reformatting to understand. Spaces win.

is iOS a stable, well made operating system? by treeboxin apple

[–]kevbru 0 points1 point ago

Yes they do, and it is damn handy! But they don't come along and demand pages BACK after you have them! On a console you own the virtual address space like (like you own RAM). On iOS, your virtual address space is "on loan" and you must return it when asked or it might be curtains for your app.

YES! This is Plex's biggest shortcoming. Otherwise it's great! Why can't we just say Show X is Y!?

is iOS a stable, well made operating system? by treeboxin apple

[–]kevbru 0 points1 point ago

The oddest thing about iOS is the memory architecture. It's has a virtual memory system, but without a backing store (hard disc), which is really odd. Many app "crashes" are really the OS shutting down an app when an app can't deliver memory pages back to the OS quickly enough. No other OS that I know of requires an App to return pages on demand, so it takes some getting used to, and can be very problematic for apps that use a lot of memory (games).

Other than that, it's a pretty nice OS with a clean API and pretty easy to use.
