The ten slowest sports cars of all time by ThatGuy210in Autos

If it makes you feel any better, that generation of Camaro was also sold with the Iron Duke - 2.5L, 92 HP. The 80s were a bad time for people who wanted a fast car...

Passenger window on my 2012 Nissan Versa was shattered on the highway. Can I replace it with a window from a junkyard? by LordAurorain Cartalk

[–]kdesu 0 points1 point ago

I don't remember off the top of my head just how old the versa is, but if it is less than around 5 years old, you may not find many at pick-and-pull type junkyards; dismantlers tend to buy the more modern cars and part them out. Prices shouldn't be too bad; I would be surprised if you pay more than $200 for a replacement.

Good Guy Epson / Why don't all printers do this? by txmailin technology

[–]kdesu 2 points3 points ago

I've had good luck with my cheap Brother laser printer (HL-2140). It only prints black-and-white, but has never refused to print anything (unlike the HP printers I tried). As for color printers, I have no idea.

Between a hard rock and a Windows Phone: Microsoft's dilemma by coolaaron88in windowsphone

[–]kdesu 8 points9 points ago

There are a few details that I disagree with in the article:

Microsoft has a long history of never being able to get something right the first time around (see Windows 7 after Windows Vista, Xbox 360 after the original Xbox and Internet Explorer 9 after 8, 7 and most of all IE 6)

Windows Vista wasn't Microsoft's first attempt at an OS (I kind of understand what you're getting at, but this wording is factually incorrect). I don't recall there being anything wrong with the original Xbox; Microsoft didn't make a profit on it, but they succeeded in making a name for themselves as a game console maker. While IE6 is terrible by modern standards, my understanding is that at the time it was released, it was a good web browser (contemporaries included Galeon 1.0, Opera 6, Amaya 5.0).

Samsung is in that same boat in regards to waiting for Windows Phone 8 to make moves.

Samsung actually just released the Focus 2 today, and announced a low-end WP7 device within the past month.

As stated before, in the US AT&T is getting all the Windows Phone love and other carriers are being left out in the cold.

I would argue that this is entirely the fault of the other carriers. In the US market, phone manufacturers produce what the carriers order. The market for buying phones outside of a carrier contract is tiny, and so if Sprint, Verizon and T-mobile don't ask for any WP7 devices, the manufacturers won't make them.

[–]kdesu 1 point2 points ago

Depends on which phone, on which carrier. I have heard that with AT&T, you can just call them up, tell them that you plan on using the phone overseas, and they'll give you the unlock code.

Otherwise you can buy the unlock code on ebay (it was $1 for my Focus), and be on your way.

Fuck this, I'm bloody near finished. by el_muerte17in cars

I agree. At one point last year, I had seen more Ferrari 458s than Chevrolet Volts. Not saying that it's a bad car, but we all know what it looks like.

Hey guys, buying a new car. Can anyone tell me if this clutter is normal or going to make fixing problems more complicated later on? by Adios_numero_twoin cars

[–]kdesu 6 points7 points ago

I feel the need to mention that, as a general rule, people who add "performance" enhancements to their cars (that one has an aftermarket air intake and strut tower bar) tend to beat on the car. Kind of self-explanatory, you wouldn't buy stuff to make your car go faster, and drive it like a grandmother.

But yeah, expect it to have been run hard.

I'm no corvette expert, but I don't think this is right... by exleyein cars

[–]kdesu 0 points1 point ago

I think it is for cost savings. They develop and manufacture only one set of knuckles. I have heard that a lot of modern gm cars are like that.

Broken ball joint.

For the naysayers: these are the main components of the C5 rear suspension. The front and rear knuckles are actually the same, so it uses ball joints in the rear.

If you want to watch a DVD in Windows 8, you'll have to pay extra for it. by ety3rdin technology

[–]kdesu 9 points10 points ago

Most mainstream distributions don't include the DVD decoding software (libdvdcss), as it can be illegal to distribute it. So in essence, the DVD situation in Windows 8 would be the same as in Ubuntu, openSUSE, Fedora, etc...

Volkswagen Passat sets world record for longest distance on one tank of clean diesel fuel by God_Wills_Itin technology

[–]kdesu 3 points4 points ago

I'm not sure if you read the article, but the couple drove from Houston, Tx to Sterling, Va. My personal car has the same engine (though I cannot figure out how they managed to halve the fuel consumption in their Passat).

finally got rid of 4X4 ride height! by everydayragesin Volkswagen

[–]kdesu 0 points1 point ago

30 MPH? More like 1/2 MPH. I'm well aware of the limitations of these vehicles.

I suspect you've accustomed yourself to driving a low car, and work around rough roads. Personally, I drive all sorts of cars, and expect all of them to work in most situations.

[–]kdesu 0 points1 point ago

You don't run into "loss of utility" like being unable to actually physically enter some places unless you're probably a good inch lower than OP's setup.

And yet - as I mentioned - I bottomed out a stock Golf at a gas station. I have to enter my driveway at a large angle to prevent it from destroying my Sportwagen's front bumper.

I don't know where you guys live (a very large parking lot, perhaps?), but I drive cars in real-world situations. And I often wish they were a little taller, I'd smash less bellypans that way.

That is correct. An inline-6 is abbreviated as I6 or L6.

How reliable is the bus system? by NitroHawk209in houston

[–]kdesu 3 points4 points ago

They're not reliable at all. I tried taking it from the suburbs to UH one day; the bus ride from the suburbs to the downtown transit center went fine. But I waited well over an hour for the bus I was supposed to hop onto next (according to the schedule they should stop by every 15 minutes). When the bus did arrive, it parked at the transit center and wouldn't let us get on (did I mention it was a cold winter day?) because a hobo had pissed on the seats and wouldn't get out.

Just use tap water? how important is it to use G12 coolant on VW GTI? by ninjaculationin Cartalk

[–]kdesu 1 point2 points ago

I have heard that you shouldn't use tap water in the coolant system - the minerals and sediment in the water will eventually clog up the water passageways in the radiator. If you must use water, you should use distilled water.

Some benefits of smoking by withpantsin DepthHub

It is more than just bad breath. I worked with 2 women who are smokers; one had brown spots on her teeth(permanently), and the other had the tops of all her teeth brown as well. Pretty nasty.

[–]kdesu -1 points0 points ago

There isn't anything you could have disagreed with, as I was talking about the loss of utility from lowering the car, and you are talking about the looks of a lowered car.

finally got rid of 4X4 ride height! by everydayragesin Volkswagen

[–]kdesu 0 points1 point ago

I'm going to agree with you. I've driven many modern VWs, and they leave the factory low enough that you really have to worry about every piece of debris on the road. I actually got a Golf stuck trying to exit a gas station; it bottomed out and the front tires were just hanging in the air.

Some kids think it's cool to smash their oil pans against speed bumps, though. I cannot fathom why.

My generic USB charger fit on both my old Jeep and various new VWs (Golfs and a Sportwagen). May be the charger itself.

Here is the DIY thread for your generation Golf. I'd say it is thorough enough for a casual mechanic.

Join a good VW forum and learn from their technical articles. I believe that vwvortex.com is a good one.

I say this because I thought I was good at oil changes; however, when I did my Jetta, I mistook the oil cooler for the oil filter. They have the same cap, but the filter is on the top of the engine (on the diesel models).
