The snow machine did not crash. The man did.

Duolingo launching to the public on June 19th. (I'm in and people really do translate the Internet while learning.) by kcinin technology

I'm not sure how effective it is if one is learning a language with no background, though. Seems to me they should add more grammar info. I'm refreshing my German, but still has to use the net to look up some grammar rules, because the lessons do not give enough info in my opinion.

It's theft, not robbery.

Doesn't look like it's more comfortable than a mouse for desktops. Except maybe for some special applications.

Other countries also have such culture, but don't you agree the US is the one which took this concept to its extremes?

Emacsy: a library which you can embed in your applications, so you can experiment with your app at runtime from an Emacs-like interface during development by kcinin programming

[–]kcin[S] 2 points3 points ago

Well, I'm not the author, I just posted it here, because I found the concept interesting, but I agree it's not clearly stated why the author needs the money. He already has a working prototype after all according to the video, so he's probably going to build it anyway, and if this is the case then the money would be better spent on some other project which really needs the funding.

If there is a feature you miss from Emacs and you think it would be popular enough to implement with crowdfunding then add it to the bottom of this page by kcinin emacs

Two problems with this. If they're already working to get money, they probably have careers that they care about, so they're probably not going to take time off from their day jobs.

There are self-employed freelancers who work on projects on demand. This model would be ideal for them, because then as a next job they could take up working on some emacs feature if they know they will be paid for it.

Anyway, it's very easy to say why something will not work, but I think it's worth a try.

Well, nothing's wrong with paying someone to do something, except... well, you're not really doing that.

Yes, I don't fix cars either and I don't miss it.

You and a bunch of other people are throwing money into a pile and hoping other people will notice it when the pile gets big enough. Not a bad system, really,

You misunderstood the model. It's not about collecting the money and giving to the first volunteer, it's the other way around. Someone comes up with a proposal which he wants to do and he has to be persuasive enough, show his credentials and stuff if he wants people to fund his proposal.

Once you put a price on something, I think you'll find that fewer people are actually willing to do the work

The problem is these are tasks which people apparently can't do in their freetime, because they involve too much work, so it's not like we have an army of volunteers who want to do it and we spoil their enthusiasm with money.

This model is intended for developes who want to work on Emacs, but they can't work on these difficult features, because they have to earn money and they rather spend their free time with their famiiies. But if we say one can be paid while working on this, so he can work on it all day then it's an opportunity for him to get paid to do what likes and an opportunity for users to finally get their favourite feature implemented.

Why don't you write a short proposal, upload it somewhere (maybe to emacswiki and link it from the crowdfunding emacswiki page) and then post a submission here asking people if they are interested? Then you can see if there is enough interest to actually start a project on Kickstarter or some other crowdfunding site.

You can use a site search bookmarklet which works on all sites, not just reddit. I use it all the time.

I'm a long time Emacs user (more than 10 years), but I haven't heard about the "Emacs vote-system" before. So it can be a good forum, but it should have better marketing. I guess lots of Emacs users don't even know it exists.

There can be better forums, apparently the problem is getting people to contribute, even if it's only about ideas. Like in this case there were only a few people who actually added a feature to the emacswiki page. Why is that? Is everyone completely satisfied with Emacs and they don't miss any features, or people are so lazy that they don't even make the effort to write down their ideas, so someone can implement them?

What's wrong with paying for something which you yourself don't want to do? Like I could fix my car, but I rather pay someone to do it. He earns money and I have the result without me having to work on it.

A better js2-mode can also be a crowdfunded feature. I'd be willing to fund it.
