2008, I came to USA for first time, got my license and took a rental car for a drive. I was stopped by cops to clear accident and i could see victim being taken into ambulance. Then I went back to my country in 2009 and came back again in 2011, renewed my driving license, took a rental car and went for a drive. And bingo, I was again stopped by cops to clear an accident at the same spot. Was bit scary.

Read the camera manual completely and be a master of all the functions.

Go out and take lots of photos. Experiment a lot.

Read good photography books. I started off by reading Understanding Exposure by Bryan F Peterson and learnt a lot.

As you expand on your skills buy new lenses per your interest and needs. Initially you can rent lens see how they perform.

Explore photos on sites like Flickr and see EXIF info and try to grasp how those photos were taken. I personally learnt a lot from Flickr forums.

Learn how to use photoshop. Sometimes you do need to alter your pictures.
