New to Playing Music in a Group (feeling anxious) by December23in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]joshuajonah 15 points16 points ago*

  • Less is more, avoid the wall of sound. You don't need to play the ENTIRE time.

  • Compliment something somebody else is doing. Ask what key the song is in and bust weird riffs following the triads if you know what that means.

  • Don't over-think writing. I usually find a cool chord and then try it in different positions with random hammer-ons until I find a feel I like, then I follow that groove.

  • Write lyrics about past experiences. I like telling stories in my lyrics. Then it doesn't sound manufactured.

  • Don't follow the notes of the song when singing. Try to harmonize with what you are playing.

  • Forget about your mistakes. We all make them and 90% of the time your audience doesn't notice.

  • Song write with acoustic guitars, you don't need distortion to figure out a chord progression.

  • Cover songs that people don't know but have heard once or twice from something else. It drives them insane and will keep them interested. For example: Where Is My Mind by The Pixies is commonly known to most people as that awesome song at the end of Fight Club, I play a Hard Core Logo song, A friend of mine plays I'm Nuthin by Ethan Hawke played in Reality Bites. You get the idea.

I'm a caveman who can't hunt yet. Where can I buy real wild game meat in Toronto? by RiceCakeKellyin toronto

That sounds shady. You just need to get to know a butcher in the outside Toronto area. Maybe Peterborough or Barrie.

To be fair, if I'm trying something I've not done fourty times successfully, I'll wear it. However if I'm taking my time and riding conservatively, I see no benefit, especially on vert or bowls where wiping out properly is natural and repeatable.

Helmets cause me to wipe out 70% more in my testing. I cannot guarantee that every wipe out will be my head, I prefer taking my chances and wiping out way less.

Should my college still be teaching Flash? by ThePeoplesMagikarpin webdesign

[–]joshuajonah 1 point2 points ago

Most schooled web developers I've met couldn't code themselves out of a paper bag. If they taught you how to learn on your own then it would be useful. What sets a shitty dev from an excellent one is the drive to never stop learning. I don't think schooling has much of an effect on this, in fact it makes it a task and you learn to hate it. You're either a web dev type of person or you're not.

As for the original question, Flash should be mentioned, but not taught. If you want to take it upon yourself to learn it, then cool, otherwise they are setting students up for an expectation that there will always be jobs in this market.

The difference between a Mexican and American Stratocaster? by timmypixin Guitar

[–]joshuajonah 0 points1 point ago

I have a Peavey Raptor 2. After a setup by a good guitar tech and putting good pickups in it, I'd rather this than any of the real strats that come around. It's also a lot lighter which makes it easier to play at gigs.

To those in a band, what's your band name and how'd you come up with it? by icecreamsocialin Guitar

The Cumtwats. The lead singer's last name is Comtois.

I've been practicing I Need Somebody lately, it's fun as hell but really hard to sing and play.

It's like they spent all of their effort on the finish and forgot to buy good wood in the first place.

I've been liking them lately too, plus they're Canadian.

They are horrible. I gave them the benefit of the doubt four times throughout my drumming career and every time they break if you look at them funny. I don't play particularly heavy or anything, other brands last as they should.

Brand doesn't mean anything, but Zildjian sticks are garbage.

This has multiple meanings when you consider they were both comedic bands.

What are their musical bliss songs? Nazi punks I listen to because I agree with the sentiment as much as anything.

For example Moon Over Marin

I've always found their guitars too twangy and Jello's singing voice too whiny.

Neil Young is also a terrible vocalist.

However, yes I agree, they could have used some better production, they really created some amazing art.
