Wow... Roachmill reference on the right side (bug in the circle w the line through it). I thought I was the only one who remembered Roachmill. Started w/ Blackthorn Publishing then moved to Dark Horse.

Sure... the first thing I did was change my diet to remove as many sugars and carbs as I could. For breakfast I would get sausage burritos from Burger King, throw away the tortilla and eat the sausage and egg. The little onion and pepper pieces hardly count for anything. Lunch was my only carb load of the day, either two pieces of bread for a sandwich or a single hamburger bun. Dinner was either a large dinner salad topped with meat (grilled chicken or beef) or a plain hamurger patty with mixed frozen vegetables w salt and butter.

Meds started at 1000 mg of Metformin w/ the evening meal, along with lovistatin and lisinopril. After a few weeks they had me add 500 mg Metformin w/ breakfast and an 84mg aspirin at night.

In terms of supplements, I really made serious gains after adding 500mg of magnesium and 600mg chromium in with the nightly stuff. Both of these have an effect on how insulin is absorbed in the body. It's quite possible I've been magnesium deficient. In addition I've always taken 5000 iu of vitamin D per day, the kind I use is not from fish oil, those little capsules are only 400 iu, these are 5000iu tablets.

Worst advice I had through all this? The nutritionist. My doc sent me to his in house nutritionist, she told me I could add 30g of carbs per meal. Doing that spiked my sugar by 50 points. It took a week to undo her advice. She also had me taking fish oil, I ran out of that about the same time I started the magnesium/chromium and that's when I saw the big, dramatic drop start so I haven't added fish oil back yet.

Testing, my doc has me running tests 3 times a week. Usually I do a morning fast trst just before breakfast, every now and then I'll do a pre-dinner test.

Exercise - minimal. I have a pre-existing condition called Spinal Stenosis, basically my spine is closing in and crushing my spinal cord. This is why my diabetes went uncontrolled so long, I already had peripheral neuropathy in my feet from the stenosis. This makes anything more than simple walking difficult.

For Towel Day: What's Your Favorite Douglas Adams quote? Here are 42 great ones by vader311in books

My favorite:

And then, one Thursday, nearly two thousand years after one man had been nailed to a tree for saying how great it would be to be nice to people for a change, a girl sitting on her own in a small café in Rickmansworth suddenly realized what it was that had been going wrong all this time, and she finally knew how the world could be made a good and happy place. This time it was right, it would work, and no one would have to get nailed to anything.

Sadly, however, before she could get to a phone to tell anyone about it, a terrible, stupid catastrophe occurred, and the idea was lost forever.

This is not her story.

I used to work in a bookstore and the highlight was dealing with kids...

One time a kid comes in the store dressed head to toe in a cowboy suit. Not just a hat and vest, he had chaps. He had spurs. He couldn't have been more than 5 years old, comes up to me, puts his little hands on his hips and goes:

"I'M A COWBOY!"

"Where's your horse?"

"AT THE RODEO!"

Another time there was a little boy dressed as a pirate. This was mid-November, and you know how hard it is to get some kids out of their Halloween costumes so I ask:

"Did you dress up as a pirate for Halloween?"

"I dress up like a pirate ALL THE TIME!" Waving his little arm in the air with "All the time!" just busted me up. I'm thinking here's a kid that when it comes time to do career assesments in school is going to be greatly disappointed that there is no career path marked "Pirate".

From what I'm hearing the injection site is the size of a mosquito bite so it's much less invasive than the old device.

This is a new kind that works for either, also allows you to control the depth and speed of the injection.

Game Theory and the TSA by 1amwendyin OperationGrabAss

[–]jordanlund 4 points5 points ago

Problem: The TSA has, in fact, failed to prevent terrorist plots originating in overseas airports. Bothe the Shoe Bomber and the Underwear Bomber boarded in International airports, Paris and Amsterdam IIRC. This leads me to believe that any lack of terrorism in US airports is simply because the terrorists haven't tried.

Unfamiliar measurements in US recipes by fruntin Cooking

[–]jordanlund 3 points4 points ago

In the US Butter comes in 1 pound boxes, each box is divided equally into four sticks. So the simple answer is 1/4 pound, but here it's all pre measured and nicely wrapped in wax paper.

Almost forgot, the wax paper has tablespoon markings on it so you can slice the stick if a recipe calls for three tablespoons.

Bad news for pseudoskeptics: according to a massive OHRI study, flu shots during pregnancy have not only been confirmed safe, but actually have some unexpected benefits by horse_you_rode_in_onin skeptic

[–]jordanlund -1 points0 points ago

This doesn't say anything about flu shots in general though, it's this one specific shot. Other specific shots have had documented problems:

Like the traditional flu shot in Canada that had the side "benefit" of increasing the chances of getting the H1N1 flu: http://www.cbc.ca/news/health/story/2009/09/23/flu-shots-h1n1-seasonal.html

Or the Swedish flu shot which ended up increasing the chances of narcolepsy: http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-31727_162-20031347-10391695.html

Or the 1976 American flu shot which increased risks of Guillain-Barré Syndrome: http://www.cdc.gov/flu/protect/vaccine/guillainbarre.htm

So, this one H1N1 shot gave pregnancy benefits (possibly), that doesn't mean that other shots aren't risky and it doesn't mean that the re-formulated shot used elsewhere or the next iteration of it next year will convey the same benefits.

Oh, hell no. But when your health depends on learning how your blood sugar works you tend to learn really, really quickly.

One of my favorite authors, Redmond O'Hanlon, put it this way ("Into the Heart of Borneo")

"As a former academic and a natural history book reviewer I was astonished to discover, on being threatened with a two-month exile to the primary jungles of Borneo, just how fast a man can read. Powerful as your scholarly instincts may be, there is no matching the strength of that irrational desire to find a means of keeping your head on your shoulders; of retaining your frontal appendage in its accustomed place; of barring 1700 different species of parasitic worm and Wagler’s pit viper from just about anywhere; of removing small, black, wild-boar ticks from your crotch with minimum discomfort (you do it with Sellotape); of declining to wear a globulating necklace of leeches all day long; of sidestepping amoebic and bacillary dysentery, yellow and blackwater and dengue fevers, malaria, cholera, typhoid, rabies, hepatitis, tuberculosis, and the crocodile (thumbs in the eyes, if you have time, they say)."

I wouldn't say a lot of lows, but each weekly average has been lower than the week before. The bit where I saw a significant drop was when I added 500mg Magnesium and 600mg Chromium daily. Dropped from 170s and 180s to 140s and 150s almost instantly. Been continually dropping ever snce.

She found inspiration in this poem so her belief system is at least flexible:

Desiderata - by Max Ehrmann

Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.

As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant, they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love, for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is perennial as the grass.

Take kindly to the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world.

Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

Max Ehrmann c.1920

He's working a minimum wage job and 1/2 of his paycheck goes to child support.

So $7.25/ hour x 40 x 52 = 15,080 / 12 = 1256.66/mo. 1/2 of that goes to support... 628.33 / 30 kids... $20.94 per kid per month.
