Iranian sailors chase off pirates attacking U.S. ship by diannee3in news

[–]jonnyvice -4 points-3 points ago

I wonder if this looming war that my government seems to be jerking off to the thought of could just be neglected in leau of working together. Something along the lines of "hey can we use your oil?"/"Sure, here are our prices".

Even though a premium, it would be much cheaper for everyone instead of a war to take control of oil sources.

The only people that don't seem to agree with that sentiment are those who would have something to gain from a decade of war and the people that vote them into office altruistically albeit ignorantly.

Anyone else seeing this on Gnome classic (gnome-panel) desktop? by jonnyvicein Ubuntu

EDIT: This has been fixed in an update to light-themes apparently. I'm however really enjoying Unity in this release, so I think I will stick with that. Thanks for everyone's suggestions!

The scene they were thinking of removing but ultimately didn't was when they were in Spawn's hideout and Joker's goons threw his body on the pool table wrapped in a garbage bag pretending he was dead. They left it in.

Thanks for the suggestion. I might try that later on, but so far I'm actually digging Unity after a couple of changes (removing sticky windows (I'm on dual monitor), reducing the size of the launcher, and that's actually it).

As it's not as jarring as I remember in 11.04, I'm going to give Unity more of a proper run as it's probably going to be default for now on.

EDIT: This is mostly prompted by me hearing that gnome-panel has been deprecated by upstream so I might as well find a desktop I can fit to my liking.

Thanks!

It looks nothing like what was previously alluded to: http://cloudfront.omgubuntu.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/gnome-fallback.jpg

I was excited to see a sane desktop available in a 5 year supported ubuntu so i checked out 12.04 64-bit and the classic environment seems very messed up for me.

1) The panel at the bottom is permanently white for each application rectangle 2) The text for "Application" and "Places" is grey color on a grey background

Other than that it's damned fast, but it just seems broken. I have only installed the chrome browser from google and ran updates current to today (May 22, 2012).

Anyone run into a similar issue?

Thanks for the reply, I'm checking them out now. I never knew these existed, plus it looks like they're all released under an open license! Very cool find. Have a great vacation!

AD&D font heavily used through the gui? Check! (Initially) Paladins could only be part of the alliance (and therefore signaling some sort of lawful good alignment where as the horde had deadite characters)? Check!

Fedora 17's Plymouth works in VirtualBox? by CodeBloodedin Fedora

[–]jonnyvice 0 points1 point ago

It's worked for a while if I'm not mistaken, though there was nothing to turn it on. Adding a vga= argument to grub in earlier versions (and I know centos/rhel which was based on Fedora 12) would make plymouth function for me. Is fedora 17 adding that to the grub conf or whatever the equivilant is in grub2? That would explain it.

Someone who may be posing as a police officer is pulling cars over on Mississippi highways and then shooting drivers dead. by iupetrein news

[–]jonnyvice 1 point2 points ago

I agree. I've been pulled over by crummy cops before but for the most part policemen are professional, well meaning and are just looking out for the safety of the public and themselves.

I think they get a bad rap when they get labeled as power abusers.

I'm in Georgia and the only places that are really crappy as far as the cops are the obvious speed trap towns like Arcade and Pendergrass.

Athens, GA police were some of the best I ever came into contact with, both the university and city departments. There is a lot of danger in being a police officer and they have to be somewhat prickly and inquisitive to look out for those who might pull a gun or injure another citizen so that's completely understanding.

If there ever was a whole city or state that had corrupt cops that did whatever they wanted they would be blotted out by IA before you could spell Mississippi, therefore I dispell any claims of such as armchair anti-police asshats.

Ok... is 4E really that bad? by ozymandiasYNWAin DnD

[–]jonnyvice 1 point2 points ago

It's not terrible. It can be fun at times. For newcomers, they seem to enjoy it most. Those that spent their time cutting teeth on 1e, 2e or 3/3.5e, it's a huge move away, but it's still d&d. personally, I prefer pathfinder if I have a choice, but I've played in 2e/pf/4e all in the last few years and have enjoyed all of them.

I say keep the books and try to start up a game. Ultimately it doesn't really matter much about edition as some people might lead you to believe, instead it matters how much fun you have! :D

Tywin picked up on Arya's habit of saying M'lord which is generally used by lords themselves when speaking and interacting with other lords. My Lord is like an over accentuated slang used by commoners when interacting with lords.

Tywin seems very suspicious, but not aggressively so, that Arya isn't who she claims to be (especially in this episode) and basically accuses Arya of being a Lady herself.

Thinking quickly on her feet, she says that her mother worked for a Lady and learned the 'proper' dialect and simply refers to lords as "M'lord" and not "My Lord" as most commoners would (as Arya claims to be).

EDIT: Yes, I mixed the terms up. Sorry!

I agree. I think The Incredible Hulk with Ed Norton did this the best. All in the beginning credits you're pretty much caught up with the events that lead to the film and basic motivations for each character.

Need suggestions for a good Distro thats not using Gnome 3 or Unity. Running on a Dell e5420 laptop for work. by CubedRootin linux

[–]jonnyvice 1 point2 points ago

That's not actually true. Red Hat backports many features from current kernels back to their el kernel branch. It may say 2.6.32, but if you were to do a diff of the sources compared to vanilla 2.6.32 you would see a wide array of bug fixes and new features such as support for newer processors, hardware devices, etc.

Barnes & Noble, Microsoft team up on Nook, college businesses - latimes.com by IranRPCVin nookcolor

What the fsck? Weren't they just in a bitter legal battle regarding Microsoft trying to force B&N to pay royalties for using Android (along with a slew of other Android device vendors)?

That's the entire reason I bought the Nook Tablet over the Amazon Fire, to show support for B&N finally stepping up.

B&N was supposed to destroy the Sith, not join them!

Ubuntu 12.04 Review - The Best Yet by ingalacticin linux

[–]jonnyvice 0 points1 point ago

Aye, I've been using it on a spare laptop to see what the fuss was about and I have to admit it's turning out to be very, very usable.

The new arrival of weird, non-desktop oriented projects that have taken over linux and windows have really irked me over the past year. I've realized after playing around with 12.04 that Canonical actually probably took the best path: with Red Hat backing gtk3 full throttle, it's only a matter of time before gtk2 support starts dropping from applications like firefox and thunderbird (just as motif dropped back in the early 2000's in those programs). In using gtk3 but designing their own desktop experience they get to offer something unique to the ecosystem while still preserving a desktop oriented desktop environment.

I run a distro called CCT Enterprise Linux and for my company's workstations and servers where we heavily utilize OpenVZ it's the way to go for us. But for our at-home laptops and computers and for relatives, I completely think it's Canonical's best release ever and is suitable for nearly anyone.
