What is the preferred engine structure for game devs lately? (Ticks, loops, etc.) by dv90in gamedev

Rendering as often as possible wastes power, so don't do this on mobile devices!

Corporate power comes from government

Some corporate power comes from government. But not all. Therein lays the reason we can't completely deregulate.

Let me ask you this: Where did 90's Microsoft get it's "government power"?

Edit: why are people always so insistent on dealing in absolutes...

Where did you hear of DF? by parlor_tricksin dwarffortress

[–]jonask84 1 point2 points ago

It was back in 2009 and a colleague back then described it as "the hardest strategy game".

"Build in graceful failure as often as possible", why planes have ashtrays in the toilets even though you're not allowed to smoke by mattkerlein programming

[–]jonask84 2 points3 points ago

Don't know why you're being downvoted; you're right. It's perfectly common for large aircraft to stay in service for up to 30 years.

Back in the 80's people could smoke on planes.

Billionaire Venture Capitalist Gave A TED Talk Saying Rich People Don't Create Jobs — And TED Is Refusing To Post It by igonjukjain politics

[–]jonask84 0 points1 point ago

Yeah that's true and all, but let me ask you this:

Then where do jobs come from?

Companies/capitalists might not like to create jobs (because they don't want to be spending money), but they still do.

And private enterprise is the largest source of jobs in the world.

And if you start a company, you will be creating jobs.

I'm not trying to take a stance on equality in a society, but I want the debate to stay factual.

I actually kinda agree. I can think of several reasons why building a movie studio next to your quiet, suburban neighborhood might upset people.

I'm sure they moved there for peace and quiet, and GL is trying to change all that. I respect them for opposing it.

As a game developer, how would you market this finished game? by ardonitein gamedev

[–]jonask84 2 points3 points ago

Okay, so time to be honest.

From what I read on the page, the game looks very simple. Like a phone game, you know.

Is the game fun? Does it have the depth a strategy game like that needs?

If so you should look for ways to convey this more clearly.

Right now I could not see myself spending more than a few dollars on this, simply because there is a plethora of cheap and simple strategy games available on my phone. Phones that your target audience for sure will have.

In short, it seems too simple to be worth the $20-30 I assume it will cost.

How do you honestly feel about 3D? by clicksmageein movies

[–]jonask84 3 points4 points ago

I actually don't feel like it's adding that much immersion:

For a lot of people the forced perspective just results in headaches and other issues that actually takes you out of the movie. I found this very distracting myself when watching even the good 3D movies, like AVATAR.

Secondly, "looking more real" does not always lead to immersion right? Books and simple illustrations and such enage our brain to use our imagination to fill in the blanks, which can work very well, and in many cases better than the director "filling it in for you". E.g. the monster is scariest before it's seen.

[–]jonask84 1 point2 points ago

At best it only gives me a slight headache and only takes a few more dollars out of my pocket.

At worst, yeah, well, we all know the story: Gimmicky, headaches, expensive, ridiculous goggles, and not really that good 3D anyway.

John Larsgard, 33, was found guilty of aggravated assault. Although he did not hit them, witnesses described the incident as threatening and potentially lethal. Judge sentenced him to 7.5-years in jail. by TerriChrisin MensRights

[–]jonask84 0 points1 point ago*

Then you're assuming a lot of terrible things about some random guy.

Let's for your sake hope no one ever assumes this much wild stuff about you.

  • Yes, he did drive slowly down the wrong way of a street, past a bunch of people. Did he danger then lives by doing so NO. Did he annoy them, pissing them off: YES.

  • He did not ignore them. He rolled his window down probably to hear what they had to say. why would he ignore them? People don't do that.

  • Your sentence here doesnt even make sense... You keep using the word "intentionally" just to make this guy seem like a bad guy. You're terrible.

  • Again, you use this word. sigh. Someone leaned into his car and broke his fucking nose! he freaked out and gunned it to get out of there; in the proecess he ran over a woman's foot. This was wrong of him, he should be on trial for this, but it is an honest human reaction to being threated on your life. I'd like to see if you'd react differently when a mob attacks your car and breaks your nose.

  • There's no evidence he verbally threatened anyone. Only the guy who punched him said he did. The accused said he didn't. Word against word. No evidence, no reliable vitnesses. Are people not innocent until proven guilty anymore?

  • Simply not the case. That's not what happened. He was backing up into the street, and hit the curb on the other side. At this point the lemonade stand was several yards away according to the court transcript. This is reckless driving, but not assault. Assault prerequisites that you had an intention to hurt these people. Why the fuck would he want to do that?? Why would he want to hurt complete strangers, it makes no sense, there's no motive for there.

There is, however, a lot of evidence for this being a very unfortunate misunderstanding. The locals thought he was after them, but he was really just scared and confused. Then they got very threatening, and he got even more freaked out and fled the scene. Running over some poor woman's foot.

Now I'm done with you. you're welcome to have whatever view you want, which you seem to share with this small town in AZ. I just ask that in the future please have some compassion, and try to see the best in people and not the worst. It shocks me how you can assume evil intent in strangers.

[–]jonask84 0 points1 point ago

seems you're assuming the guy is crazy, rather than assuming he is sane and just made a mistake (statistically, most people are sane).

WHY would he want to drive down a one way street? WHY would he want to break the law?

He drove slowly, just trying to get to the shop he was going to, probably letting people get out of his way. He probably did not understand right away that he'd made a mistake and why people were so mad at him

maybe he had his window open so he could try and understand what all those people were so angry about. obviously he didn't get it was a one way street.

being a foreigner he might have not understood it was a one way street, and all the commotion must have just made the situation more confusing for him.

Also, he was driving slowly, which at least shows he wasn't trying to hurt anyone, just get to the property on the street he was going to.

I've always loved this about these guys. by xx2Hardxxin gaming

[–]jonask84 0 points1 point ago

Right, I think that's pretty close to the established truth yeah.

The combine do have a 'homeworld', however, so I think they're more like an empire (think the English Empire) than nomadic. Like you said, they expand outward by subduing and conquering worthwhile races they meet. You can see this homeworld through the 'wormholes' opened at the end of HL2, that the gunships come through.

I've always loved this about these guys. by xx2Hardxxin gaming

[–]jonask84 0 points1 point ago

Yup, correct on both points as far as i know.

The vortigaunts and nihilanth are not native to xen tho. they're refugees hiding there from the combine.

The combine had been fighting the nihilanth and his enslaved vortigaunts for a long time, and were surprised and curious when this new, and for them, unheard of species (Humans) managed to defeat them.

I've always loved this about these guys. by xx2Hardxxin gaming

[–]jonask84 0 points1 point ago

Wait, I don't think that's right. The nihilanth didn't hold the combine back.

Though much of this is speculation, I believe it is accepted by most that the combine became aware of Earth and Humans because of Freeman defeating the nihilanth. They were also extremely interested in our experimental teleportation technology, as it is actually superior to the Combine's own teleporters. (see the massive machine needed to transport Breen at the end of HL2).

Then they drew their plans during the portal storms, and a few years later they invaded.

Fortress Overseer v0.70.1 (3D Visualizer supporting both 34.07 and 31.25) is out! by oneironautin dwarffortress

[–]jonask84 7 points8 points ago

We've tried, and short answer is "it's very hard".

Injecting commands into DF doesn't really work. The stuff DF Therapist does is about as far as it's convenient to go, simply changing labor settings.

Sending keystrokes is probably the best bet, this has been done before, but not with too much success.

In short, it's gonna introduce all sorts of latency issues and lag and it would feel very uncomfortable (not like normal game, which i think is what people would expect).

Until Toady implements an API, there's no sensible way of doing it :)
