[Weekly Discussion Thread] Scientists, what are the biggest misconceptions in your field? by fastparticlesin askscience

I know, it's never easy to change conventions. But that word is really unfortunate, especially in the context of nuclear energy which is so sensitive in terms of public opinion.

Maybe your field should agree and start using a different word?

If the header is sensationalized or delusional, I think the correct thing to do is to report the link.

South Korea to Chemically Castrate Repeat Child Rapist by PrinceDakkarin worldnews

[–]joelthelion 1 point2 points ago

You can see where they are and that they're not near places they're not allowed to go like schools.

That constant monitoring would cost a lot, not be very reliable, and there are children everywhere, not only near schools.

I don't think chemical castration is an acceptable option.

You don't even give the beginning of an argument against it.

"Chemical castration" is not a permanent thing.

Are we really talking about the same kind of "chemical castration"?

It's a good part of it, though, or more specifically, hormones are an important part of the question. It might not work for all these criminals, but I bet it can work for at least some of them. So the question is, can we verify that the therapy is working?

but I'd prefer to offer them a choice between continued imprisonment or GPS tagging/monitoring

How does GPS tagging/monitoring make them safe for society? I'm all for offering choice to these people, as long as it is safe for society. In my mind the whole point of the judiciary system is not to offer revenge or to rehabilitate criminals, but to protect society from crime.

C'est meilleur pour les enfants venant de famille défavorisées: plus encadrés, ils ont plus de chance de réussir. C'est évidemment moins bien pour les familles où tout va bien et où les deux parents bossent à 100% ou presque.

I agree: if the problem is sufficiently complex, you need both a computer specialist and a domain specialist. But things will be far easier if the domain specialist has even basic knowledge of programming.

You know who can best write code to solve a problem? Someone who actually understands the problem. And the person who best understands the problem is the person who has it, not some random developer reading a spec. If more people could code, more systems would be designed with coding in mind, and a lot of problems could be solved.
