TIL: an Amtrak ticket from NYC to Montreal costs $60. by vvpanin nyc

[–]jmikola 7 points8 points ago

A non-trivial slice of the time accounts for the border crossing. I recently went a couple of months ago and the train was stopped for 1.5-2 hours on the way into Canada.

Drafts start at 6:30pm, but folks tend to show up after 5:30 for trading and casual games. See you there :)

Best Burritos in Hoboken? by wrexerin Hoboken

[–]jmikola 0 points1 point ago

I think RatherDashing was referring to Mision Burrito. They previously occupied 209 4th St for as long as I can remember (going back to 2001) but moved up to Jersey City a few years ago: http://www.yelp.com/biz/mission-burrito-jersey-city

209 4th St is currently Hoboken Burrito, which is the second time the location has changed hands since the original moved to Jersey City. The owner before that left in 2011 to open a shop in NYC.

So does anybody know what was up with the Easter Bunny outside the PATH Train today? by Harkein Hoboken

Possibly this:

The second link has a video from last year's event (I imagine the bunny suit is the same).

Anyone know what's up with the cop cars all over Palmer? by spiffythrowawayin stevens

I've not seen email the OP is referring to, but this was shared by a faculty member on Facebook:

According to the alerts we have been receiving, a student has been found dead on the 3rd Floor of Palmer Hall. Your prayers are asked, for the student, their family, friends, and the campus.

That was direct to Facebook. Likewise, the Dan Duchamp and Paul DeMarco comic was never published. I just threw in some extras.

Fried pizza is a real thing. Anyone try it? by JiveMonkeyin nyc

[–]jmikola 1 point2 points ago

I've done this before using plum tomatoes, fresh mutz and basil as a topping. With a little less of an inch of olive oil in the pan, I cooked one side of the crust for a couple of minutes, flipped it and added on the tomatoes and cheese while the other side fried. The indirect heat was enough to lightly melt the mutz.

You'll want to make sure the oil is at a high temperature to avoid the dough soaking it up. Done correctly, the end result actually isn't very greasy.

Sure. The setting is incredibly intimate with no more than a dozen or so guests. You sit at a counter forming a C-shape around the open kitchen, staffed by a handful of cooks, Cesar himself, and a hostess that delivers each plate.

The menu is quite sparse, listing only the central ingredient of each of the ten or so courses. The chef will describe each dish in detail as it's served, and kindly repeat it if you don't catch it the first time. Like a typical tasting menu, many of the courses are one or two-bites. He might even instruct you as to whether something is meant to be enjoyed in a single bite.

I don't have many other experiences to compare this to, but suffice to say, it was well worth the price. I don't recall what that price was, but he's clearly not trying to make a quick buck with this restaurant. It's definitely all about the gastronomic experience.

Lastly, wine is BYO. I arrived ill-equipped with a desert wine, but was fortunate enough to sit and converse with some generous diners. The intimate atmosphere of the entire night was a close second to the excellent food.

What juicy secret do you know about your work/employer/company that you think the public should know? - Throwaways advised! by Trustmebitchin AskReddit

I did a co-op semester with them many years ago (before they moved to Wiley) and actually recall the pay being above-average. I imagine the internships A_real_gangsta is talking about are some other positions, as there's no way the Stevens co-op office would let this fly with their own students.

Sadly, the practice of handing out meagre stipends in place of even minimum wage for interns is quite common.

EDIT: Interesting. A little googling turned up this review:

Interviewed Apr 2011 (took 2 weeks)

First interviewer was pretty laid back. Second interviewer just went over the position. Position includes working with financials and researching. Seems like a pretty good internship. Unpaid but a $15 stipend for every 4 hrs worked.

Reason for Declining

I got an offer somewhere else that pays.

Other Details

The interview consisted of a 1:1 Interview and a Background Check.

The Chef's Table and the grocery store are actually two different things, with a coffee shop inbetween. I actually walked into the grocery store when I arrived for my reservation last year and a clerk kindly directed me a couple of doors down the block to Cesar's kitchen. It's definitely not restaurant-among-retail in the same sense that Eataly may be :)

Lutherburgers in NJ? by [deleted]in newjersey

[–]jmikola 0 points1 point ago

I was able to order this by request at Stinky Sullivan's in Hoboken earlier this month. It was a slow night, so I able to convince the waitress and cook to indulge me. Naturally, they didn't have donuts, so I had to run a block south to 7-Eleven for a couple of Krispy Kremes (or a close facsimile). The end result was this. It was far from the tastiest burger I've had, but I must give them credit for the effort.

Also: I convinced my less adventurous friend to order a cheeseburger between two grilled cheese sandwiches (pictured here). The grilled cheese sandwiches definitely could have used more butter and flattening. Further uptown, I hear that Hudson Tavern actually has this on the menu, although I've never been.

This is a bit off topic, but I have to ask. Does anyone know the etymology of "system" being tacked on to diner names? I've seen this before with sliders in NJ:

Do you suppose it's just a fancier way of saying franchise? I want to believe the truth is something far more interesting...

Were there recent package-shaping changes? I was working out of Carnegie building today and experienced horrendous latency attempting to establish SSH connections. I was using git at the time and only saw this when accessing via SSH; there were no issues using HTTPS for other repositories.
